Moment Of Truth For Ah How

[h=3]Monday August 8, 2011[/h][h=1]Thien How has had enough after suffering eight first round exits[/h]

    THE STAR

    [h=2][/h]

EIGHT is enough. That’s the number of first round exits Hoon Thien How (pic) has suffered in international tournaments since pairing up with Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif last year.
He is now determined to end the jinx at the World Championships when he and Zakry open their campaign against 2005 world champions Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach of the United States at the Wembley Arena today.
“I do not want to lose in the early round with Zakry anymore – especially at this world meet,” said Thien How.
The world No. 25 pair have suffered first round losses in eight of their 13 international tournaments together.
“I have played against Tony when he used to play with Candra under the Indonesia banner.
“But I have not played against him with Bach and it will be quite interesting.”
Debutant Thien How has a good chance of going far with Zakry if they can take their chances against the naturalised American players.
A win will likely pit them against Taiwan’s Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu in the second round.
The Malaysians had beaten the Taiwanese in the first round of the All-England this year.
Without former world and Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia ruled out from their quarter after Markis was taken ill, the path is now open for Thien How-Zakry to reach the semi-finals.
Youngsters Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon will also be in action today against Poland’s Adam Cwalina-Michal Logosz in the first round.
Last year’s runners-up and fourth seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will enjoy a first round bye and are set to play China youngsters Liu Xiaolong-Qiu Zihan.
In the women’s doubles, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty will take on England’s Jenny Wallwork-Gabrille White while the Ng sisters – Hui Lin and Hui Ern – will take on Russians Anna Kobceva-Elena Prus.
Mixed doubles aspirants Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying should clear their first round today against Mexicans Lino Munoz-Cynthia Gonzalez.

Managed to beat over the hill Tony G/Howard B- 21-17, 21-14.....
now the real test will start in the form of Fang Chieh Min/Lee Sheng Mu of Taiwan...
eventhough Ah How and Zakry managed to beat them in AE, but I preferred to be modest on their chance...
give his best and hope the best will come...

Zakry and Thien How beat 2005 world champs in their opening match

SHUTTLERS Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How got off to a splendid start by dumping 2005 world champions Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach of United States in the opening round of the World Championships yesterday.
The unseeded Zakry-Thien How combined well to beat their more experienced opponents 21-17, 21-14 despite facing a strong resistance in the opening game.
Today, Zakry-Thien How will take on Taiwan’s Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu.
Debutant Thien How was happy that they cleared the opening round after losing many times in the same stage in other international tournaments over the last one year.

“We feel thrilled to clear the first round by beating the former world champions. It is all credit to our great game plan,” said Thien How.
Thien How-Zakry started well, keeping the shuttle low, forcing Tony-Bach to lift the shuttle, which often ended up being hammered down by the powerful Thien How.
The crafty Zakry was exceptionally good at the front, lunging at every shots coming over the net.
Zakry is hoping that they can keep up with the momentum in their bid to go far as possible in the tournament.
“The second round against the Taiwanese will be more challenging. We have beaten them once at the All-England this year. They possess good speed and power and we will be ready to counter them,” said Zakry.
It was a day of mixed fortune for Chan Peng Soon on the opening day when he crashed out in the men’s doubles event but made it up with a superb win in the mixed doubles.
In the men’s doubles, he teamed up with debutant Lim Khim Wah but the duo failed to get their game going and went down tamely 13-21, 19-21 to Poland’s Adam Cwalina-Michal Logosz.
In the mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying when they blew away Mexicans Lino Munoz-Cynthia Gonzalez 21-9, 21-5 in 16 minutes.
“It was a good warm-up for us. They were not a match for us. But our real challenge will start tomorrow (today),” said Peng Soon.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying will take on England’s favourites Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork for a place in the third round.
“They will have the fans here rooting for them. We will not let them intimidate us. We have beaten them once at the China Open a few years ago and hopefully, we will be able to do the same here,” he said.

Badminton / World Championships: Zakri-Hoon stun former world champs
    2011/08/09
    Vijesh Rai
    rai@nst.com.my

ZAKRY Latif-Hoon Thien How led the charge as Malaysia opened their World Championships doubles campaign on a winning note at the Wembley Arena yesterday. Zakry-Thien How faced a potentially difficult first round tie against Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach but the Malaysians produced a great show to send the Americans, surprise world champions in the 2005 edition, packing 21-17, 21-14.

Though Gunawan-Bach are no longer the force they were in winning the world title in Anaheim, victory was a morale booster for Zakri-Thien How as it would, albeit slightly, silence their critics over the Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen fiasco.

"We were told to focus on the match and not the controversy leading up to the World Championships and that is exactly what we did against the Americans," said Zakry.

"The coach (Rexy Mainaky) said what was important was for us to prove that we deserve our place in the World Championships. He said to forget everything else."

While victory was sweet, the Malaysians were nonetheless guilty of numerous unforced errors and will have to tighten their game ahead of the second round clash against Taiwan's Fang Chieh Min-Lee Sheng Mu today.

Zakry-Thien How beat the 10th seeds in the All England in March but Rexy said that wouldn't make today's match any easier.

"The Taiwanese are a solid pair and Zakry-Thien How have to produce their best if they want to advance.

"It was a good victory today (yesterday) but there is still room for improvement. With (Indonesians) Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan having withdrawn, Zakry-Thien How should aim for a good run here," said Rexy.

He, too, refused to be drawn into the Teik Chai-Bin Shen saga, where the two were omitted by BAM in favour of Zakry-Thien How for the World Championships despite the former having qualified on merit.

"I don't want to dwell into the matter as the focus now is on trying to get Zakry-Thien to advance as far as possible. With Markis-Hendra out (the Malaysians were drawn to play them in the third round), they should be targetting the quarters and semis even."

There was a winning start for the Ng sisters, Hui Lin-Hui Ern who beat Anna Kobceva-Elena Prus of Ukraine 21-14, 22-20.

"It is our first World Championships and all that we have targeted is a good run. We shall see how it goes," said Hui Lin, a mixed doubles gold medallist in the 2007 World Junior Championships.

They will play Japan's Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi, the 15th seeds, today.

Mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying also advanced after beating Mexico's Lino Munoz-Cynthia Gonzalez 21-9, 21-5 and play English 10th seeds Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork today.

In late action yesterday were women's pair Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui who took on England's Jenna Wallwork-Gabrielle White while mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah lost to Poland's Adam Cwalina-Michal Logosz 21-13 21-19.

But both he and Zakry played surprisingly well in defending and driving. And they played with palpable intensity and hunger to win, which is always a good sign.

One thing that I noticed with HTH is his backhand drive when he is under attack, the diagonal drives often sent Howard Bach to the corners of the court. His mobility is slower but he made up using his awareness and anticipation. Zakry was quite ordinary but he played better than his usual erratic self.
A good start for them, at least they broke the 1st round casualty jinx
However, beating TG-HB does not mean that that HTH-Zakry will go far, apparently the Americans looked lethargic and off form, played well below their usual standards seen in US Open recently.
Let's see how HTH-Zakry perform against the fast and attack-minded Taiwanese.

just managed to watch the video thanks for the upload by member
and you are right, the US pair played well below par and Ah How and Zakry basically get an easy win for this...
not as good as I imagined...HTH/Zakry need to buck-up when facing the Taiwan pair...
or else if they continue to play like yesterday, I think the chance is slim...
anyway everyday is a different day...hope they will improve..
