Chong Wei happy that BAM want to retain Misbun

KUALA LUMPUR: World number one shuttler Lee Chong Wei is happy to learn that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) want to retain his coach Misbun Sidek’s services.
What would be even better for the shuttler is Misbun retracting his quit decision, which he made via e-mail on Dec 31.
Misbun had quit citing unhappiness over several BAM coaching and training committee’s decisions.
Chong Wei then threw his support behind his coach, saying he would leave the BAM fold if his coach quit.
The BAM executive council, led by president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, met for three hours on Wednesday and decided that they wanted Misbun to reconsider his decision to quit as chief coach.
And this has gone down well with Chong Wei, who feels that he is now ready to shift his focus to defending his title in the Malaysia Open, which will begin on Wednesday at the Putra Stadium.
“They (BAM) have heard my voice. They have looked into my needs as far as my preparation for the Olympic Games is concerned and they have also decided to put the interests of the nation first,” said Chong Wei.
“BAM want to meet up with Misbun again.
“I hope this time they will cooperate with him.
“It is important that all of us work together.”
The BAM are expected to strike a deal with Misbun although the national body insisted that they would not make any changes to the coaching and training structure.
It is not known what kind of compromise will be reached but all efforts will be made to get Misbun to coach Chong Wei as soon as possible so that the shuttler can fully focus on his game – especially in his preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
“Hopefully, all this will be resolved as quickly as possible,” said the shuttler, who has been top seeded for the Malaysia Open.
Chong Wei, fresh from winning the Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei on Sunday, admitted that it would be a huge challenge for him to win his sixth Malaysia Open title in the presence of several top guns.
Those in his half are three-time world champion Lin Dan of China, Chen Long of China and Malaysians Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann.
Chong Wei is expected to meet Lin Dan in the semi-finals.
“It will not be easy but I’ll give it my best. It is my goal to defend the title,” said Chong Wei.
Second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, South Korean Park Sung-hwan, China’s Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin, Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana and two other Indonesians – Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso – are in the lower half of the draw.
Meanwhile, the probable meeting between Chong Wei and Lin Dan in the Malaysia Open next week has seen badminton fans frenziedly snapping up tickets for the semi-final stage onwards.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) finance and marketting manager K. Manoharan confirmed yesterday that 50% of the tickets for the premier seats had been sold out.

Special effort to stop No 1

LEE Chong Wei, despite the unsavoury saga of his coach Misbun Sidek's resignation and the presence of arch rival Lin Dan, will be the player to beat when the Malaysia Open begins at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.
Chong Wei, in search of his seventh Malaysia Open crown, seemed to have put the Misbun affair on the back burner when he easily secured the season opening World Super Series Masters Finals in Taipei 10 days ago.
Misbun, who resigned on Dec 31, and whose coaching career with the BA of Malaysia (BAM) is still in the balance, has yet to meet with BAM officials but discussions are expected to take place during the tournament.
Records show that it takes a special effort to dethrone Chong Wei in the Malaysia Open and Lin Dan will have to be at his best to do so.

Lin Dan failed to stop Chong Wei winning the title twice — in 2005 and 2006 — and the China ace is still hunting his first Malaysia Open title.
Lin Dan’s performance has been mediocre at best in this event for reasons only known to him and his shock defeats to Park Sung Hwan of South Korea in the 2004 and 2007 editions only add to the belief that it will be tough again for him this year. Everything points to a Chong Wei-Lin Dan semi-final and that will be a cracker.
Chong Wei has it easy in the early rounds before a likely quarter-final meeting against Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh.

The other Malaysians will face a tough time getting through the first round with Hafiz Hashim up against China’s third seed Chen Long, and veteran campaigner Wong Choong Hann facing a tricky opening match against Marc Zwiebler of Switzerland.
The draw looks bottom heavy where second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia will meet Sung Hwan while Bao Chunlai of China will be up against Japan’s Kenichi Tago in the first round matches.
Chen Jin of China, Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana, Simon Santoso of Indonesia and South Korean dangerman Shon Wan Hoe are all in the bottom half, thus making life easy for Chong Wei.

Men’s doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will be hard-pressed to defend their title if their recent performance in the World Super Series Masters is any indication but national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky is reasonably confident the pair can turn things around.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong will face a minor test in the first round where they meet China's back-up pair Shen Ye-Hong Wei before a likely meeting against compatriots Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.
The Malaysian pair, if they advance, should meet Taiwan’s Chen Hung Ling-Lin Yu Lang before playing former world champions Tony Gunawan-Howard Bach in the last four.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong will then find bogey pair Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong of South Korea awaiting them.
The Koreans have won their last three meetings but Kien Keat-Boon Heong, on this occasion, have home ground advantage, and coupled with their experience, must not disappoint the local fans.

Chong Wei Capable Of Winning Without Misbun - Rashid

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- World number one and top seeded Datuk Lee Chong Wei is capable of winning the Malaysian Open Super Series even without his mentor and coach Datuk Misbun Sidek said national head coach Rashid Sidek.

Rashid who is also Misbun's younger brother said Chong Wei has enough experience and capability to win at the international stage, especially after having won the Malaysian Open six times before.

"I am confident with Chong Wei's capability, skill and experience. Although without Misbun, Chong Wei's experience can see him excel at the highest level," he told reporters here Tuesday.

Barring any upsets, Chong Wei is expected to face his arch-rival and nemesis Lin Dan of China in the semi-finals.

Lin Dan who has not played in the Malaysian Open for three years, will certainly be out to dash Chong Wei's hopes of winning his seventh title.

Chong Wei kicks off his campaign against qualifier Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia while Lin Dan will meet his fellow countryman Zhengming.

But while Rashid was confident with Chong Wei's capabilities, he was furious with the performances and attitude of the back up players who made too many simple mistakes.

Young hopefuls Chong Wei Feng, Darren Liew, K. Yogendran and Chan Kwong Beng failed to get past the qualifying stage.

Go out and enjoy; Misbun’s simple advice as Chong Wei seeks seventh title
    REPORTS By RAJES PAUL

MISBUN Sidek may not be with Lee Chong Wei during his matches at the Proton Malaysia Open but he wants to see the world No. 1 have fun and enjoy the games.

Misbun’s advice should give Chong Wei an extra boost in the mission to win his home Open for a seventh time.

Chong Wei opens his campaign against qualifier Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia today.

“Chong Wei’s main job now is to stay focused and enjoy the matches. I want him to play for the country,” said Misbun, who has notified the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) of his decision to quit as national coach.

Misbun believes that if Chong Wei puts his mind to it, even China’s three-time world champion Lin Dan will find difficulty to spoil the party.

The maverick coach has yet to show up at the training ground after his shock resignation on Dec 31.

Misbun has been asked to reconsider his decision and he said that he would do so after a meeting with BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh during the Open.

In fact, a “special” BAM council meeting has been arranged for Sunday for Nadzmi to brief the members on Misbun’s status and there could be some positive news.

On court, there is no denying that a clash between Chong Wei and Lin Dan will be the perfect highlight for the season-opening BWF World Super Series.

They will meet in the semi-finals if Chong Wei clears a quarter that has Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam and Japanese Sho Sasaki and Kazushi Yamada while Lin Dan does the same from a quarter, which has compatriot Chen Long and two Malaysians, Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann.

Matches in the other half of the draw involving Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai of China, South Korean Park Sung-hwan and Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana should also give Malaysian fans good treats at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

“I am not thinking of my past encounters with Lin Dan,” said Chong Wei yesterday.

“This is a new season and a fresh start for me. I will go all out if I get to play against him.”

In the men’s doubles, coach Rexy Mainaky also has a piece of advice for his prized pair, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who are the defending champions.

“This year is all about being positive for Koo and Tan. I have encouraged them to make a strong comeback this year,” said Rexy.

“It is time for them to ‘clear their kitchen’. Their opponents knows too much about their game style and formula for success. They need to vary their game.”

Kien Keat-Boon Heong are tipped to play against second seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong in the final. The Malaysians have yet to beat this Korean pair.

The other strong contenders for the title include third seeded Indonesians Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan and compatriots Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano and Chinese scratch pair Chai Biao-Guo Zhengdong.

The other Malaysian men’s pairs in the fray are Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How.

In the other events, Malaysia have Wong Mew Choo, scratch women’s pair Chin Eei Hui-Goh Liu Ying and top mixed pair of Chan Peng Soon-Liu Ying to create some excitement.

We hope that LCW is thinking of his current encounters with each opponent (at this 2011 Malaysia Open SS) before he gets to face LD.

I am surprised to read it. BTW, I would think the BAM council would make their call based on whether LCW makes it or not as the 2011 Malaysia Open Mens Singles champion. :p:p:p
