Courtesy of The Star Chan-Goh stun second seeds in their own den By RAJES PAUL PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying made a breakthrough in their careers when they upset second seeds Xu Chen-Ma Jin of China to reach the quarter-finals of the China Open in Shanghai yesterday. World No. 9 Peng Soon-Liu Ying battled for 49 minutes to beat the All-England champions 21-14, 11-21, 21-16 in the second round. It was their first win over a Chinese pair in their four-year-old partnership. Today, Peng Soon-Liu Ying will take on Thailand’s A. Songphon-V. Kunchala for a place in the semi-finals and national coach Jeremy Gan hoped that the duo continue their fantastic run. “This is the first time that Peng Soon-Liu Ying have beaten a Chinese pair and this win should boost their confidence,” said Jeremy in a telephone interview. “They played well against the Chinese today (yesterday), showing quality in their first three shots. “Their service and return were sharp and they played smartly rather than just attacking aimlessly. “It will be not easy against the Thais but I hope Peng Soon-Liu Ying will ride on their renewed confidence to make the semi-finals.
Surprisingly tame loss to the THA No.2 XD after their two big wins, still need to get back down to earth after big wins like that...
The Star Online > Sports Wednesday January 11, 2012 Fatherhood fuels Peng Soon’s fire to do well in London Olympics FATHERHOOD has a way of changing a man. For mixed doubles specialist Chan Peng Soon, it has given him the extra impetus to do well in the London Olympic Games. It has been nine months since Milton Chan Teng Yee was born and Peng Soon has managed to juggle his duties as a father, loving husband to May May and a national shuttler. He has also become a more committed and responsible person. Peng Soon, who will turn 24 in April, said it had been tough at the beginning but he had grown into his new role. Family first: Chan Peng Soon and wife May May with their son Milton. “Being a father has made me more mature and responsible,” he said yesterday at the periphery of the Malaysia Open where he and Goh Liu Ying will be hunting for honours over the next few days. “I was happy beyond description the day Milton was born. Then, came all the work and sleepless nights. “It was difficult to balance my personal time with my training. Now, I am an expert at it. “In fact, fatherhood has taught me to be more organised and focused.” Fatherhood has certainly made Peng Soon more determined than ever to script a record his son can be proud of. Peng Soon and Liu Ying, the German Open champions, steadily climbed to ninth in the rankings over the last two months to book their place in the London Olympics. And now, the duo are bent on meeting a personal challenge in the Malaysia Open where they have never gone beyond the first round. They meet fifth seeds Chen Hung-ling-Cheng Wen-hsing of Taiwan in their opening match which is expected to go down the wire. “Liu Ying and I have come a long way since we teamed up four years ago but have never been able to do well at the Malaysia Open,” said Peng Soon. “We intend to end that bad run this time. “It’s not nice to lose in front of your home fans all the time. “A win will also help us in our bid to make the top eight in the world rankings and be seeded in the Olympics.” The duo, along with Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing, are Malaysia’s mixed doubles representatives in the Open. http://thestar.com.my/services/printerfriendly.asp?file=/2012/1/11/sports/10241142.asp&sec=sports No wonder CPS had to get married in a hurry in 2010

Haha, I thought how come marry so young, looks like that is the reason Hope that it doesn't distract him from badminton! And he proved it when they won the first round just now!
Plus he got married at a really busy time, before CWG & Asian Games, at the time I was thinking why not dec, less busy. Unless the reporter got the baby's age wrong. Cps only got married slightly over 1 year. If the baby is really 9 months, hehehe....
Ooooh............ Ooooh..... OoooH!
As long as he plays badminton well, and brings glory to the nation with his performances on court, that's all that matters. His personal life should remain private. End of story.
Showed crazy mental strength to save match points in the first round and the quarter-final just now, and also came from behind and edged Diju/JG out in the second round, all in 3 games. Although it is almost a forgone conclusion that it is the end of the road tomorrow, I really hope that they (especially CPS) iron our their mistakes today and give Z/Z a run for their money. They didn't play well today...
Hmm..... as expected, playing against ZN/ZYL was a bit too much and Goh/Chan make their exit. I must say though, Goh Liu Ying displayed some fantastic touches playing in the front court. She was actually matching Zhao Yunlei and at times playing some very sophisticated and finesse shots. She caught Zhao Yunlei and Zhang Nan out a few times, which is a feat in itself. She moves quite fast and appears to have pretty good vision actually. But I do feel that her defence needs some work. She was also let down by a lack of consistency overall with some of her shots. However, I'm not as convinced about Chan Peng Soon. Not consistent, smash not strong enough, and a lot of mistakes. A lot of work to do here la. And I agree with GC, that the both of them defend from too deep in the court. Hoon Thien How may actually be a better partner for Goh Liu Ying actually. He's certainly a lot more experienced, packs a strong powerful smash, and displays a good positional sense. But I guess it's not that simple la. Goh and Chan have had a few years now to develop their understanding and style of play. I hope Rexy takes this pair under his tutelage, develops them, allows them to grow their own wings and lets them take flight. Though they lost their semi-final match, the 2nd set was quite tight for quite some time. Watch this space. I have a feeling that we can expect more good things to come from this young pair as long as they don't become lazy and arrogant like KKK/TBH. Malaysia BOLEH.
[h=1]Coach to beef up training sessions[/h] Jeremy made the decision following Peng Soon-Liu Ying's 21-13, 21-16 defeat to China's World No 1 Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei in the semi-finals of the Maybank Malaysia Open yesterday. "They lack speed, power and consistency. I need to have a re-look at their programme and most likely add regular sparring sessions with the men's doubles squad," said Jeremy at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday. "They haven't been training regularly because of the tight tournament schedule but they will get some time off to strengthen their game ahead of the All England." Peng Soon-Liu Ying are set to make their maiden appearance at the Olympic Games in London, where they hope to make an impact. The World No 11 started impressively by earning the opening two points before Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei warmed up and went ahead to clinch the first game. In the second game, Peng Soon-Liu Ying picked up the pace to lead 11-9 and 13-12 but the world champions caught up with some excellent tight shots and won 21-16. Peng Soon said he and Liu Ying were too hasty in the second game. "We tried hard and aimed at producing spectacular shots to earn points but made mistakes by doing that," he said. The China pair, however, praised Peng Soon-Liu Ying for their gritty performance. "They played well in front of their fans but we kept our cool and won the match in two games. We just played our normal game," said Zhang Nan. It will be an all China final in the mixed doubles after second seeds Xu Chen-Ma Jin defeated Indonesia's Ahmad Tontowi-Liliyana Natsir 21-17, 21-14 in the other semi-final.
