Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 07-Apr-2013 (A Short Report)

Here is a short report for our Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 07-Apr-2013.

At this CATS, we did the topic on: Players' Positions involved in Level Doubles Games.

Some points to remember;
* The 'Front-and-Back' is a position ready to attack.
* The 'Square' position is a position ready to defend.
* Before the Service, the server is best to signal to your partner on how you intend to serve.
* The partner of the receiver needs to be very alert (ready to move in to cover the open space).
* Before your game, discuss with you partner who is to cover the 'Back Triangle' and the 'Front Triangle'.
* etc, etc, ......

I feel that some trainees are still not understanding the lesson taught here. Please ask me questions next week (to answer any doubts that you have).

Comments on our 8 attending trainees:
1. I am happy that our 4 trainees (Timothy-T, Mario-P, Markus-H and Daisy-L, who have done this chapter before), all remembered their court-coverage well when asked to demonstrate to our other 4 trainees.
2. WaiKin-Y is learning fast and is doing well.
3. Alex-P needs to be more alert when playing as a partner of one who is receiving Service. Very often, she is not moving to the front when her partner gets a 'Flick Service'.
4. Tracy-T is not 'Squaring' after a Lift. No wonder she couldn't defend the smash directed at her.
5. Chong-S is not covering her front court after she does a 'Low Service'. You need to realise that your partner is twice the distance from the net after your 'Low Service'.

2013 Australian Open (from April 02 to April 07): Lee Chong Wei was eliminated

Hi CCC CAT trainees,

Many Malaysian CCCers have asked me how come Lee Chong Wei didn't win at our 2013 Australian Open held last week.

* Footwork (count their transfer of weight)
* Longest reach (at the net)
* Longest reach (to block a Smash)
* Lift follow-through (accuracy compared to their Net-Flicks)

* Maxima trajectory when Blocking a Smash (to the forecourt)
* Gap & variation in smashes (direction & power)
* Selection of shots (in every situation)
* Using wrist power (not only arm power)

Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 14-Apr-2013 (A Short Report)

Here is a short report for our Sunday CCC CATS at MSAC on 14-Apr-2013.

We welcomed 2 new trainees, namely;
1. David-L (from India)
2. Felix-G (from Indonesia)
Hope that they have enjoyed our CCC CATS.

At this CATS (on a cooler day), we conducted the topic on the Smash.

Some points to remember:
* When training to smash, we concentrate on hitting the shuttlecock downwards through the 'Gap' space over the net. Some trainees are thinking of smashing with 100% power all the time. May I remind trainees that I give the term 'Kill' when smashing with 100% power. We are training to smash, not to 'Kill'.
* A more comfortable smash is usually using around 60-80% of your power.
* A 40% power smash often ends up like a Dropshot. And quite often, this stroke could produce a winning shot too.
* Note: The faster you smash, the faster is the return; Therefore, if you are slower mover, it is best to smash at a slower/lower speed/power. Why? Because you can then cover all the possible returns; whether it is a 'Block', a 'Lift' or a 'Drive' return.
* In order to hit the shuttlecock downwards through the 'Gap' space over the net, it is best to have your 'point of impact' at around 10:30 o'clock.
* Learning to jump up to smash will always create a steeper trajectory.
* While doing our drills, we also covered blocking and lifting, and footwork.
* etc, etc, ......

Comments on our 7 attending trainees:
1. Timothy-T is doing well. Not only is he varying his power/speed of his smashes, but also their direction (to the left, right or centre). However, to start your drill, it it best to start with your Low Service first.
2. Markus-H often miss-hit when jumping up to smash. Don't worry. You will soon get to learn the different timing required for doing them.
3. Daisy-L is blocking the smash well; often getting the 'Maxima' on her side of the net.
4. Chong-S will need to lift higher in order to gain more time to return to base (ready for the next shot).
5. WaiKin-Y needs more footwork training. We could do this topic at our next CATS.
6. New comers, Felix-G and David-L, have a lot to learn. Don't count your steps; Count your 'weight transfers' instead.
7. etc, etc, ......
