Banned Tan Chun Seang to play in Germany

    thestar online
    Friday July 22, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: Former international men singles shuttler Tan Chun Seang will be celebrating his 25th birthday today with a big smile.

Yesterday, the former top back-up player signed up a deal with Apacs in a bid to revive his badminton career as a professional player and prove that there is still some good badminton in him.

Apacs will sponsor his three-month stint with PTSV Rosenheim, a club in Germany. He will participate in the German league and will also take part in the German Open at Munich to improve his world ranking.

The left-handed Chun Seang, who is currently ranked 163rd in the world has been banned by BAM from competing in Asian tournaments for the next two years for walking out on the national team.

Chun Seang is the first Malaysian shuttler to serve a ban for two years for sending a resignation letter to the BAM. The player decided that he was unable to contribute anymore in the elite team after his game had stagnated.

Kedahan Chun Seang, however, was happy to get a second chance to revive his career.

“I am no longer injured and looking forward to the stint in Europe. I will give my best to improve my game. Eventually, I hope to compete in the Super Series events,” said Chun Seang.

Apacs manager Jebbery Lim said that it would be worth their money to send Chun Seang to Europe.

“Apacs has a market in Europe and Chun Seang will be able to market and promote the brand for us. We are looking forward to our partnership with Chun Seang,” said Jebbery.

With Chun Seang’s entry, Apacs now have a total of five players under their banner. The others are new recruit Chong Li Qun and three old timers – Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen and Kuan Beng Hong.

I am so happy that we now have Zulfadli Zulkifli (becoming our World Badminton Junior Champion (2011)) participating as an independent player (although he was still representing Malaysia).

Let's hope for more sponsors who would come in to support independent players, and allow them to remain as independent players (just like many sponsors who are supporting players in Tennis, Golf, etc......). instead of just sponsoring players who are players from National Associations.

Lin Dan said Li Na should be regarded as China's outstanding performer in 2011

    .
Today, 31-Dec-2011, it was reported that Lin Dan said that tennis ace Li Na should be regarded as China's outstanding performer this year (2011).

"Though her championship is different from those we have won at the Olympics, she has changed the way the world values China's sport. I hope many other (Chinese) can achieve this, too," said Lin Dan.

    Source: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2011-12/31/content_14361668.htm

I wonder if Lin Dan is thinking of going independent after the 2012 London Olympic Games. :D:D:D

I hope LD does go independent after OLY12 whether he wins or not. If LD wins OLY12 gold, that would cement his greatest of all time legendary status and going independent LD has nothing to lose as most likely CHN is looking to replace him anyway. The question I have is would LYB allows him to do that, cos' if LD does succeeds as independent, would that disrupt 'The System' and encourage more players to go independent. That may be nightmare for the boss. Another question is LD has won a lot of prize money over the years, is the cash in LD bank account or withhold by the boss, if so, going independent is not that easy and really at the mercy of the boss;)

:D:D:D This is the thing about our Badminton - Our players have become slaves to their National Associations. This is because of China's way of looking at sports.

Now, I think you understand why I have mentioned so much (in this thread) about Li Na leaving China (and now training in Europe).

For your favourite player, Lee Chong Wei; I think he can perform better if he leaves BAM and go to train in China, Indonesia, Korea or even Denmark (and going independent, of course).

BTW, you are thinking of who owes who too much; instead of what is best for how Badminton can develop as a top and popular worldwide sport.

I am for players' glory; not for their National Associations' glory.

Don't think it is possible under the current circumstances, at least if you want to participate in those prestigeous tournaments like WC or Olympics.

Hope that BWF will follow how Tennis to do it, and change it for players' glory; not for their National Associations' glory.

    2013 Indian Badminton League (August 14 - 31)

    .
I have been following the 2013 Indian Badminton League thread:
    http://www.badmintoncentral.com/for...9-2013-Indian-Badminton-League-(August-14-31)

I am delighted that this league will help professional players wishing to go on their own. :):):)

I think we have oversimplified in our thinking of players going professional... Yup Li Na is a successful case study but in reality, there are many players ranked 50 and below struggling to make a living at the satelites/challengers. Without association support, many has to depend on their family to start off their tennis career.

until the sport itself could sustain the life of the majority of players, including their hiring of supporting team (coach, trainer, medical, ... etc), it is impossible for players just go straight out to be indi-pro...

Li Na did benefit from such sustainability from pro tennis and therefore could survive so many years until she won the 1st Grand Slam...

at the moment, no such environment in badminton.

    This really upsets me

    .
Don't get me wrong. I am not encouraging all players to go professional (when most of us know it's tough for them to do so).

I am encouraging national associations to allow their players to go professional if their players wish to do so. Currently many national associations despise their players wishing to go professional, removing them from their national team set-up. This really upsets me.

Other national associations of sports like Soccer, Tennis, Golf, etc, etc, ... do not despise their players wishing to go professional. Them professional players are usually included in their national teams when inter-nations matches are played.
