Nice pics Loh! Missed you Singapore Pictures. City Harvest is a nice church. I've been there few times and alot of my friends attends there too. Most of them are Australian graduates.
Whenever I visit the new HDB (Housing & Development Board) estates I have a feeling of 'freshness', of renewal. I'm most fascinated by the variety of facades the architects managed to add to normally mere barren buliding blocks. And the colours they introduced are definitely more hip and daring! I particularly enjoy looking up to the top to see the roof designs and it will surprise you how different they could be!
You're right... the range of colours and facades is quite uplifting The only building that bothers my conscience is the new Supreme Court. Why should the ordinary man's highest forum for justice be so extravagantly encased in marble? And what is that huge, saucer-shaped thingy on the top? Expenditure's crowning moment? Maybe you should post a slew of defining pictures here A court is not a showpiece for lavishness... it's a place where equality and fairness should rule.
Oh our Supreme Court, was formerly housed in the majestic, colonial City Hall, overlooking the Padang, our great playing field, right in the heart of the CBD! The Padang and the adjacent Elizabeth Walk, now largely occupied by the Esplanade,Theatres-on-the-Bay, used to be a favourite hang-out for young couples and families who frequent the "Satay Club" at the extreme end near the Singapore Recreation Club. Not too far away on Beach Rd, could be found neat rows of stalls selling mostly Malay delicacies, including satay, mee goreng, pisang goreng, mee siam, etc. I didn't even realize that the new saucer-shape Supreme Court is encased in marble, but it is meant to keep up with the times and hi-tech advancement (our Supreme Court is now 'electronically' wired to reduce or do away entirely with paperwork). It is true that there was hue and cry in public about the extravagant expenditure on public or government buildings and since then they have been much more subdued in spending, but of course "equality and fairness" has continued to rule in our courts regardless. Nice pictures; I must include Singapore a visit in my future vacation trips. Somehow, I think, it could be a good idea for BC members to introduce their places of countries with events, occasions, festivals, places of attractions and etc. with pictures.
there's not much in ipoh other than old buildings, and more old buildings. this place is so calm you could practically sleep peacefully at 8pm. hehehehe. i dont have a digital camera anyway. i will take some pictures if i could borrow my sister's. dont know when though.
Amazing... you're something of a Singapore Mapper I wonder how many pictures of Singapore your collection has... Must be several thousands! By the way, that flying saucer and its marble pedestal (the court complex beneath it) reportedly cost upwards of $250 million Also, the paperwork reduction argument is misplaced... ...in the recent new NKF vs old NKF case, they had to drag in extra shelves to stack all the paper. I believe the documents disclosed by one defendant alone was over 55,000 pages. Multiply that by 8 parties and you get 440,000 sheets of A4 paper. And that's just one defendant's stuff.
Of course the NKF case was a very big one, very exceptional and I'm not sure whether it was possible to use IT then to communicate and transact exchanges because of the sheer volume of records, some of which could have dated way before they use the hi-tech facilities. But suffice to say that as a result of the IT introduction, many more cases were dealt with expeditiously and they have managed to erase much of the backlog. In this sense justice were brought much faster to those who deserve. I read that even law makers from other countries are sufficiently impressed to want to introduce the system to their own countries. Some may not like the 'UFO' saucer as our twin Durians (Esplanade) were once similarly despised. But I think in some ways, it is very unique in shape and does give a futuristic sense of modernity.
if i am not mistaken, most of them became man made lake. where people go fishing. and sometimes it became like a nature conservation area where rare birds come and go. i guess there are people who watch the birds too. plus, if people want to see old buildings in ipoh, people can watch lust caution (the movie by ang lee)
Great pictures!! Keep them coming... Btw Loh, how did you get the pictures of Supreme Court from high grounds? I used to work in one of the offices in High Street Centre which allows me to have that similar view .
