    Datukship for Chong Wei (updated)

    By PRISCILLA DIELENBERG

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will award a Datukship to badminton singles player Lee Chong Wei, 26, who won the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas would confer the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN), which carries the title Datuk, on Lee on Aug 30.
"The state will award the DSPN to Penang's first Olympic silver medallist, Bukit Mertajam home-grown talent Lee Chong Wei," Lim told a press conference Wednesday.
He said Chong Wei had done not only Penang but also Malaysia proud with his achievement.
"Even though Malaysians were disappointed that he failed to win the gold medal, we are proud at his singular achievement which has brought joy to both state and country.
"The state government hopes that this recognition will spur him on to break more records and achieve greater success to win greater glory for both Penang and Malaysia," said Lim.
He said the DSPN was instituted in 1976 and limited to 800 living persons, and is conferred on individuals of high position who have contributed unique and valuable services to the state.
Chong Wei was not at the morning press conference as he is only scheduled to arrive from Kuala Lumpur in the evening while Lim has to fly off to Kuala Lumpur for his live debate later Wednesday night.
Also at the press conference were state Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi and Chong Wei's eldest brother Chong Hoon, who contacted the badminton player on his mobile phone and placed it on loudspeaker mode.
Chong Wei said he was very happy and did not at all expect to get a Datukship for being a silver medallist.
"I thought that maybe, if I win the gold medal, I might be given Datukship. But no, I never expected it for the silver and was very surprised," he said.
Chong Wei said he thought Chong Hoon was joking when he called him on Tuesday evening with the news.
"My thanks to the Penang state for fully supporting me," he added.
Chong Hoon, 33, said he was proud of his brother and happy for him.

I still think it's a bit too early for him to get the Datuk title although I appreciate his effort in the Olympics. I think it still wouldn't be too late if he is awarded the Datuk title when he retires. He'll be having his appearance in Seberang Jaya at 5pm, and also a friendly badminton game with one of the politicians later at 8.30pm, also at Seberang Jaya. Gawd, i wish i know the directions to that area.

Give him a break. LD was in 'God Mode' that day.
He's considered the only man capable enough to match LD.
Had it been anybody else, he might have lost by more embarrassing scoreline.
    Taufik might even get 0 - 21.;)

Yeah..Ld is pretty something that night.
Luckily he passed the doping test.
Misbun himself was amazed with Lin Dan.Chong Wei just have to work harder. But,do not question his determination.Throughout the olympic,he did well.

Be proud that our badminton community have Lin Dan.He is a pride. He is damn good shuttler.Got to confessed this.

    Think before judge people

For me it is not nice to talk about bad things when thing do not go by your way.
Let us see the ways the final match played.
From the smashes from LD, can be saved by LCW but mostly will be drop at the net !!!
What LD needs to do is double effort to second attack from the drop from LCW. By then LCW stunned by the speed, continue attacks etc.
Months before the game, I think the coach behind this attack should be congratulated. He studied the ways LCW played throughly !!
I am not saying LCW is not good but LD has been guided to handle LCW.
Hopefully LCW will recover fast & continue to contribute to country or himself as a professional player.

Olympic medallist Chong Wei receives Datukship

GEORGE TOWN: Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei was conferred the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN), which carries the title Datuk, at a special investiture yesterday.
He received the award from Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas at the latter's official residence in Seri Mutiara here.

Present was Abdul Rahman's wife, Toh Puan Majimor Shariff.

Also present were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, his wife Betty Chew, as well as Lee's parents, Lee Ah Chai, 55, and Khor Kim Chooi, 54.

Lee, who turns 26 in October, said he preferred to be called by his name.
"I feel more comfortable that way. This also puts me on the same level as other badminton players," he said while thanking the state government for conferring the datukship on him.

The world No 2 vows to perform better, saying that his immediate task was to defend his Japan Open title next month.

Lee lost to world No 1 Lin Dan from China 12-21 and 8-21 at the Beijing Olympics.

Meanwhile, Lee said he was happy to return to his hometown in Bukit Mertajam after an absence of one year.

Lee started playing badminton at 13.

He is known for forehand cross-court smashes. His footwork, controlled aggression and forehand slices (reverse in particular) make him one of the fastest tactical players in the world.

Lee is coached by Datuk Misbun Sidek.

The Federal Government presented Lee with a RM300,000 cheque recently and awarded a lifetime monthly pension of RM3,000.

Misbun was conferred his Datukship on 27 Aug, one day earlier than LCW, the sifu must be before the student, hehe.

Why dont give the Datukship to Datuk Lee's parent also. Because his parent produce him. Got contribution also.

Dato, you're so funny today. :D:D His parents not only produce LCW, they supported him throughout his early years playing baddy leh :p. And LCW doesnt want ppl calling him Datuk, like Nicol David also.

Now LCW can call Misbun "coach Datuk Haji" kah kah kah.

Lee Chong Wei has many Badminton supporters !!!

    .
limsy ... Thank you for the link. :):):)

It's great that Lee Chong Wei has so many Badminton supporters.

And to LCW, I would say "It's no secret, you'll feel better if you cry".

(And from the lyrics of the song "CRY")
Remember sunshine can be found behind a cloudy sky
So let your hair down, and go on baby and cry
