We always talk about the able bodied badminton players, forgot about the less able bodied. Since this is 1st Para AG & badminton is being played, good to feature it. Held in Guangzhou also. Official Website : http://www.gzapg2010.cn/en/ Malaysia's representative : "The other gold medals should come from badminton (Cheah Liek Hou-Suhaili Laiman)...http://thestar.com.my/services/printerfriendly.asp?file=/2010/12/7/sports/7569022.asp&sec=sports Cheah Liek Hou is a left hander, 22 years old, right arm had some defect. Cheah also participates with a able bodied partner in Msia local tournaments in National GP, SUKMA in MD(won bronze with Goh Wei Shem). He won the MD title in 2010 Msia Para Games. No idea about his partner's background. I couldnt find any list of participants in official website, so please list out the badminton participants if you have the info.
Today's results for badminton, the official site takes ages to load though http://www.gzapg2010.cn/info/ENG_ENG/ZZ/ZZS103A_BA@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ENG.html Today was R16 & QF for MS & WS. In Para Games, there are many classifications, I cant quite make out the short forms they use. Supposed to be Standing above waist(the one arm player that can be seen on the website), Standing below waist, Wheelchair categories. http://www.parabadminton.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100&Itemid=142 http://www.parabadminton.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=125&Itemid=141
Today's final results : MS, category BMSTL1 : Gold =Hoang Pham Tang(Vietnam, wow), Silver= Tian Shiwei(China), Bronze=Juhari Radhi(Msia) MS category BMSTL2 : Gold =Pham Duc Trung(VIetnam, wow again), Silver=Dwiyoko(INA), Bronze=Loi Lang Yean(Msia) MS category BMW2(Wheelchair) : Gold = Lee Samseop(Korea), SIlver = Choi Jungman(Korea), Bronze=Osamu Nagashima(Japan) MS category BMW3(wheelchair) : Gold=Shim Jaeyul(Korea), Silver= Saibon Madslan(Msia), Bronze = Truong Ngoc Binh(Vietnam) WS Category BMSTL3 : Gold = Wang Songye(China), Silver= Ma Hui Hui(China), Bronze=Parul Parmar(India) http://www.gzapg2010.cn/info/ENG_ENG/ZZ/ZZS158A_BA@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ENG_date=2010-12-15.html One aspect same as the usual AG : China take the women's dept. One aspect different : China dont dominate the MS
Btw, STL1, STL2, STL3 means Standing below waist. 1,2,3 is the level of impairement in their legs as explained in the para bwf site. Wheelchair 1,2 also is according to level of disability Oops I forgot to post 2 more results : MS category STL3: Gold= Yu Kwong Wah (HK, wow), Silver = Hary Susanto(INA), Bronze=Omar Bakri(Msia) WS Category BMW2 (Wheelchair) : Gold=Amnouy Wwewithan(Thailand), Silver = Lee Sunae(Korea), Bronze=Sujirat Pookkham(Thailand)
Just happened to pass by. Wonder if I could possibly get 11 points off one of these palyers in a set?
Cheah Liek Hou made it to the finals for both his events, MS(STU5) & MD(STU4/5). Msia Hairulfozi Saaba/Mohd Zambri Yusof just won the bronze in MD BMSTL3 category, beating the Thailand pair 21-9, 21-12. The finals will be tommorow. Another thing I noticed about Para AG is the players are mostly 30+ and 40+, including the gold medalist. Cheah LH's MD partner is 48 y.o.
Today's Finals Results : MS BMSTU5 (Standing above waist, with disability in upper body, mostly 1 arm non full functioning) Gold : Cheah Liek Hou(Msia) -Congrats! Silver : Suryo Nugroho(INA) Bronze : Ryan Yohwari(INA) MD BMSTL 1-3(Standing below waist, leg impairement) : Gold : Hary Susanto/Trihono(INA) Silver : Chiang Chung Hou/Lin Cheng Che(Taiwan) Bronze : Hairulfozi Saaba/Mohd Zambri Yusof (Msia) Both finals matches were completed in straight sets. Hopefully Cheah LH can do a double by also winning the MD, he only has 1 hr rest in between
Hehe, Cheah Like Hou delivered. Congratulations to him. He can play MD normally fairly well in the National GP Finals if I remember correctly.
He won 2009 Pahang Open with Chow Pak Chuu, but Division 2 lah. This Year won SUKMA bronze with Goh Wei Shem. Play with able bodied opponents he can hold his own, just no diving like LCW to save shuttles, cannot balance.
Wah, he is still fairly young. And can win in national circuit also. Not bad, no wonder favourite to win Paralympics, hehe.
http://www.gzapg2010.cn/info/ENG_ENG/ZZ/ZZS158A_BA@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ENG_date The MD STU 4/5 Finals is currently on, there's livescore running on the site. Wow, Cheah/S Laiman leading 13-4 in 1st set
Last month's AG had livescore, but only for selected sports, less popular ones. They had for beach volleyball and a few others. Para AG, well, less sports, can put for all I suppose. Cheah/Suhaili Laiman won 1st set 21-8. I more concerned abt Cheah's partner, 48 y.o. uncle already.
Not to mention both are disabled. Both CLH prove that disablility also not a real barrier to compete against non-disabled one, won Pahang Open. Hope I can see him in international tournaments.
Actually I didnt know Cheah has a defect on his right arm until another BCer mentioned it. His non playing arm looks perfectly normal at 1st glance, but he cant lift it high like we can. That's also why I think he cannot do dives as he cannot balance himself with right arm, cannot recover fast enough for next shot. Cheah LH/S Laiman won the MD STU 4/5 GOLD, 21-8 21-7. Congrats! Silver to INA, Bronze to China
I just noticed, two of the women's events are in round robin style, due to lack of participants. The one that won the most matches wins the gold. WS BMSTL2 : Gold=Msia, Silver = Thailand, no Bronze http://www.gzapg2010.cn/info/ENG/ZZ/ZZM192A_BAW003003@@@@@@@@ENG.htm WS BMSTU5 : Gold = Japan, Silver=China, Bronze=Thailand http://www.gzapg2010.cn/info/ENG/ZZ/ZZM192A_BAW004004@@@@@@@@ENG.htm MS STU4 Gold=China, Silver=Sri Lanka, Bronze= Japan
Wow, that was a thrashing. Congratulations to all MAS gold medallists (3 events, right?) and of course to Cheah Liek Hou for winning 2 golds.
http://sports.sinchew-i.com/node/15984 Cheah(left) & Suhaili are the ones holding up the no 9, they won the 9th gold for Msia at Para AG. The Msia WS who also won gold I think is the one in badge tudung, 3rd from right, she's 35 according to the profile (click enlarge on sin chew site if you want a bigger view). Together with them are all the medalist from other sports Congrats, hopefully our Paralimpic players will get more recognition in future.
