Yeah agreed. I can live with doesnt sound right but some commentators are freaking irritating. I was watching a match between LCW and Gade the other day and the commentary was in Chinese. The commentators where talking like non stop throughout the whole match and drove me nuts. I deleted the match as I will never see it again. I got a few other matches with Chinese commentary and they are ok.
Btw, off topic a bit.. where's 'that guy' aka John Burgess now? I begin to miss his voice actually Though it's quite annoying..
Hm. Is this John Burgess ("NOOOOOOO no no no, outrageous, absolutely outrageous...THAT is NAUGHTY!")? Because although he can be annoying at times, he is really passionate about the sport and knows a lot more than the sorry excuse for a commentator that commented the WC (referring to the Koreans as 'Japanese' all the time.....I'm still grinding on that^^)... NOOOOOOO no no no, outrageous, absolutely outrageous...THAT is NAUGHTY!" Yep, that's his trademark quote!
Yeah, that's probably my personal favourite. That, and ".....the umpire just allowing both players to take on board some liquid", or something to that affect. I think she is a fine commentator. She was also a brilliant player in her day.
Do you guys feel something is just not right when watching a match with English commentary that does not have GC in it? I get the feeling when watching the 2008 Olympics games. She got us hooked with her trademark quotes
We could easily turn watching badminton into a drinking game. 1 vodka: for every time GC says outgrageous etc etc
Yeah, just like what we do when watching soccer/football - but instead of picking a player's name, you pick a common GC phrase Shame there's no live Badminton around here, though. And I doubt I'll ever get anyone to watch a recorded game with me
We tried something similar for every time Darren Hall said "absolutely"; we were falling-down bladdered within fifteen minutes.
Ms. Clark must be so proud to have a thread dedicated to her on Badminton Central. And even more proud to be the prop for new drinking games. How about an interval of interesting GC facts? For example, did you know that she was born in Baghdad? Or that she was a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire?
"Singles, of course, is very different to doubles, where it's about trying to out-manoeuver your opponent". She has a tendancy to use the English word "crikey" whenever showing astonishment eg. "Crikey, was that 284kph, surely not?". I only notice because my Dad is English and frequently uses the same word. Fans of the late Steve Irwin and his tv shows will be familiar with the same exclamation. I think she is a great ambassador for the sport.
Gillian is also much in demand as an inspirational/motivational speaker. She was President & Chairman (person?) of the International Badminton Players Federation 1990-1995. Chairman of the Wimbledon Squash & Badminton Club 1993-1994. And has a list of wins on the International circuit more than the number of years I have lived! And this too: She does not wear a wig. She wears spectacles, not glasses. She may drink gin, but I don't have any definite information on this. However, she is not known to swear. She is fitter than Geoffrey Boycott. Or Beefy, even. She is human, ergo, fallible. I thought I detected a touch of sore throat at one of her most recent commentaries. Or maybe just her frustration at having to commentate all alone, over again. Either way, a stiff brandy is recommended, Gillian. Cheers!
In recent tournaments, I noticed a new phrase, "Very/Awfullly close to taking that before it had crossed over the net". Although I have to say on most occasions the shuttle had VERY clearly crossed the net and only once was it actually close Great to see that she commentated the Asia Championships though - wouldn't have expected that in a tournament without Europeans. Hopefully that means she'll also comment all Olympic finals - the commentator doing the 08 XD final in my version is so awful I'm close to muting it every time I watch it.
