LCW won't play at this year's SEA games. MAS's men challenge will be lead by Goh Wei Shem/Lim Khim Wah in doubles and Liew Daren in singles. We would be counted lucky if we can even reach the semi-finals as Singapore will be tough.

Sports Ministry needs Rp 700b more for SEAG preparations

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 08/31/2011 6:30 PM

Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng says his ministry is still waiting for Rp 700 billion from the state budget to finalize the preparations for the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang and Jakarta in November.

"We hope the funds will be disbursed next month [September] at the latest," said Andi as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Wednesday.

Andi said the extra funds would be proposed by his ministry in the revised 2011 state budget, but did not explain how the funds would be disbursed once the proposal was approved.

He added that his ministry was also looking for alternative funding from private sponsors to help cover the deficit.

The preparation for the biennial sporting event hit a snag following a bribery scandal implicating secretary to the sports minister Wafid Muharam and contractors developing the athletes' village for the Games. The scandal has also dragged former treasurer of the ruling Democratic Party, Muhammad Nazaruddin, into the legal arena.

Ramadan Over, SEA Games Preparations Kick Into High Gear

    Ami Afriatni l September 05, 2011

With Ramadan over, organizers and athletes return to a daunting workload ahead of the Southeast Asian Games.

Rachmat Gobel, director of Indonesia’s SEA Games organizing committee (Inasoc), has promised a renewed focus on marketing following the end of the fasting month.

“We will focus on marketing as the Games still needs more sponsors,” he said.

Inasoc has signed deals with several sponsors, with most of its prestige partners being big companies such as instant noodle maker Indofood Sukses Makmur, flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, media group MNC, communications provider Indosat and electronics firms Panasonic and Samsung.

Sponsorships are crucial to the Games as organizers have trimmed staff and expectations amid budget shortfalls. Sports federations have also felt the pinch, with several cutting back on training camps or making do with inferior equipment as money proves scarce.

Regardless of funding issues, co-host cities Palembang and Jakarta must prepare to hold test events prior to November’s SEA Games. The South Sumatra capital will host test events in nearly 20 sports beginning this month.

Indonesia's Best Talents Involved in the SEA Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies
    allnews-pic-62.jpg

Success story of a sporting event begins since the very first day the event is officially held. That is why the opening and closing ceremonies have been major concerns of the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).

The organizers has vowed to make the Games something to remember through the ceremonies.

"In every multi-sports event such as SEA Games, Asian Games and Olympic, the opening and closing ceremonies have been capturing public's attention," said Rachmat Gobel, Inasoc Director General.

In that matter, the organizers proudly announced the names of the country's best talents to get involved in the ceremonies.

Indra Yudhistira as the event director and conceptor will be working together with top music director, Erwin Gutawa to present a performance show that will be unforgettable. Top choreographers such as Ari Tulang, Deddy Pudja, Hartati, and Alex Hassim will start working with percussionist Ade Rudiana.

Indonesia's top singer and actress Agnes Monica in the ceremonies will proudly sing the Games' theme song, that will be released during the 100 day towards the SEA Games kick off ceremony on... Agnes will be collaborating with the Phillipines' top singer Lea Salonga and Malaysian Idol Jacklyn Victor.

"It is a very exciting moment to work together with the country's best artists to present something for the country that will be remembered forever," Rachmat added.

Indra, who is also Inasoc's Head of Deputy IV, said it will be a big challenge for the organizers to bring something different from previous events.

"Indonesia is rich with cultures. Together with these artists, we will give something different in Palembang that would be a good memory for everyone," Indra said.

There would be 150 pieces of orchestra, 1,000 rampak gendang (traditional drum performance), and 5,000 dancers involved in the ceremonies combined with high-tech performance using the biggest LED cyclorama, moving stages, and giant picture projection.

Shuttlers Get More Time to Impress Before SEA Games

National shuttlers have more work ahead of them to make it into the Southeast Asian Games squad.

The Indonesia Gold Program (Prima), which oversees training camps for of the Games, has extended the deadline for national sports federations to submit their entry forms from the end of this month to the end of September.

For the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), that means more time to oversee shuttlers’ progress.

“There is plenty of time for us to carefully select the candidates. We will see their progress in several upcoming tournaments before deciding who will be selected for the final squad,” team manager Maria Fransisca said.

One of the tournaments is Taiwan Open Grand Prix Gold. Most national shuttlers will take part in the Sept. 6-11 event, including 2010 runners-up Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir.

The PBSI has submitted its provisional squad of 23 for the Games, which take place Nov. 11 to 22 in Jakarta and Palembang.

For men’s singles, the PBSI is preparing five names, led by world No. 5 Taufik Hidayat. The others are Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Simon Santoso, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka and 17-year-old Shesar Hiren Rustavito.

Sony, Maria said, was still struggling to recover from a back injury but would likely join Taufik if he recovered in time.

In women’s singles, four players are in the national training camp. They are Adriyanti Firdasari, Lindaweni Fanetri, Aprilia Yuswandari and Maria Febe Kusumastuti.

The PBSI named two pairs each for women’s and mixed doubles: Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari as well as Vita Marissa and Nadya Melati in women’s doubles, with Tontowi and Liliyana competing in mixed doubles as well as Fran Kurniawan with Pia Zebadiah Bernadet.

Men’s doubles is the association’s biggest headache, with three pairs fighting for two berths. While Markis Kido has recovered from the typhoid that saw him miss the World Championships, he and partner Hendra Setiawan face tight competition from sixth-ranked Bona Septano and Mohammad Ahsan and eighth-ranked Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan.

The PBSI is targeting four gold medals in this year’s Games, matching its performance at the 2009 event in Vientiane, Laos.

Elsewhere, Indonesia secured two titles at the Vietnam Open Grand Prix on Sunday. Women’s doubles pair Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Anneke Feinya Agustine earned their first title since being paired together earlier, ousting second-seeded Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei of Singapore with a 23-21, 26-24 victory.

Young men’s doubles pair Angga Pratama and Rian Agung Saputra grabbed another title when they beat Singapore’s Chayut Triyachart and Danny Bawa Chrisnanta, 21-12, 16-21, 21-19. It was their first title after a year as partners.

SBY signs 2 decrees to speed up SEA Games preparations

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 09/16/2011 10:26 AM

A presidential palace official said that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed two presidential decrees allowing the SEA Games committee to manage its own funding and goods procurement.

“The committee can use the two decrees immediately,” presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said Thursday night as quoted by kompas.com.

Julian added that the President had mulled over signing the decrees for three consecutive days before finally he agreed.

Earlier, officials warned that the organization of this year's SEA Games, to be held in Palembang, South Sumatra, could be delayed due to slow preparations. The delays, they said, were unavoidable because of a late disbursement of government funding.

Singapore's Men's relay team aim to make a statement at the SEA Games

    by Low Lin Fhoong

SINGAPORE - The Republic's 4x100m men's relay team are looking to upset perennial favourites Thailand at the upcoming SEA Games in Indonesia from Nov 11 to Nov 22.

After storming to prominence at the last edition of the Games in Laos, where the quartet of Gary Yeo, Muhammad Elfi Mustafa, Lee Cheng Wei and Muhd Amirudin Jamal (picture) set a national record of 39.82sec en route to the silver medal, the squad - with reserves Calvin Kang and Lim Yao Peng - have been set a loftier goal: Crack the Singapore record, beat the Thais and bring home the gold.

Speaking to Today last Friday, relays coordinator Melvin Tan said: "We are quietly hoping to spring a surprise and beat the Thais but it will certainly take a national record to win the gold medal.

"There have definitely been some setbacks these past two years but we are used to it. I think the athletes are motivated. We are trying to keep them injury-free and in peak condition for the Games."

Plagued by injuries last season, the runners have been making steady progress since.

At last month's World University Games, Kang, Amirudin, Lee and Yeo clocked 40.44s to finish fourth in the final. The race was won by South Africa (39.25s) with China (39.39s) taking silver and Hong Kong (39.44s) the bronze.

Prior to that, the quartet finished seventh in 40.24s at the 19th Asian Athletics Championships with Thailand's Narakorn Chaiprasert, Wachara Sondee, S Suwannarangsri and Jirapong Meenapra clocking 39.72sec to take fifth place.

Yeo and Lee are well on their way to recovering from knee injuries while Elfi suffered a pulled hamstring at last month's Puma Festival of Faas.

A time trial will be held three weeks before the SEA Games to pick the fastest four.

Tan is also hopeful that Elfi and Yeo can deliver an individual medal in the Games' 100m final. Two years ago, in Vientiane, Amirudin was pipped to the bronze by Indonesia's Fadlin by 0.01s.

Said Tan: "There is a possibility of a medal as Gary and Elfi have done season-best times of 10.62s and 10.59s and I think they can run even faster."

    ^^^

Glad to know how determined the SIN track & field team are, uncle.
However, as the subforum implies ('Badminton Tournaments', that is), shouldn't this thread be specifically limited into badminton-related information in the upcoming SEA Games?

Taufik lost to lower rank player again today.

But I guess PBSI will still call him for Sea Games after all he is still rank no 1 from Indonesia. It is good to put Taufik to play first single and Simon can be 2nd single. But for individual MS, better let Simon play and a young player.

I guess Sony may not be entered. I suppose better to give a younger player more experience.

Firda and Linda will play. The other 2 spot will filled by Febe, Nana, April or Bella, and it will be determined through selection. And base on the news , Febe is on the top during selection and will all the matches , followed by Bella, Nana and April. So i think the other 2 spots is for Febe and Bella. As expected, April never doing well against INA players. But i prefer April and Bella to go.

Federations in No Rush To Register Athletes for SEA Games

    Ami Afriatni
    | October 06, 2011

It is not just the venues that face a last-minute rush in order to be ready in time for the Southeast Asian Games.

With 35 days before the opening ceremonies take place in Palembang, only half of Indonesia’s sports federations have settled on the athletes they will send to the Games.

The Indonesia Gold Program (Prima), which oversees training camps in each sport for the event, confirmed on Thursday that only 24 of 48 federations had submitted their final squad lists.

“Actually, we hoped all the federations could finalize their rosters [on Wednesday],” said Surya Dharma, the head of Prima’s operational department. “However, several federations still have training camps or tryouts abroad, so they asked to send the squad list later this month.

    Badminton: Tommy Sugiarto Is Back

    Ami Afriatni
    | October 07, 2011

After 15 months out of the Indonesian Badminton Association’s good graces, Tommy Sugiarto is back with the national team. Tommy and Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka rounded out the men’s singles squad as the association, also known as the PSBI, announced its 20-shuttler squad for the Southeast Asian Games on Friday.

Taufik Hidayat and Simon Santoso were already assured of their places. That left the ailing Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who won a silver medal in men’s singles in the 2009 Games after losing to Simon in the final, out of the squad and with plenty of time to rue his precipitous drop in form.

“This really is an honor for me because [the PBSI] recognizes my achievements despite the fact I’m no longer in the national training camp,” Tommy said on Friday. “I’ll do my best for the country.”

Friday’s announcement was another breakthrough for the 23-year-old, who quit the national team in June 2010 after slumping to 123rd in the world ranking. Tommy has won three tournaments this year, including his first Grand Prix Gold title in Taiwan, and seen his ranking rise to 18th.

“I have a big responsibility on my shoulders right now, and I will work hard not to disappoint the fans,” said Tommy, the eldest son of Indonesian badminton legend Icuk Sugiarto.

SEA Games Venues Will Be Ready, Contractor Says

    Ami Afriatni | October 10, 2011

Laughing off mounting doubts about venues for the Southeast Asian Games, one of the major firms in the project insists they will be built on time.

Progress has been slow in construction of three main venues — the athletics stadium, aquatics center and shooting range — at Jakabaring Sports City in Palembang, which is co-hosting the Games with Jakarta.

Delays have seen construction fall well behind schedule, raising concerns whether the South Sumatra capital will be ready when the Games open on Nov. 11.

“Working hours in construction are different than the usual office hours,” Endang Hidayat, the aquatics center project manager, said on Monday.

“In construction we have effectively 24 hours in a work day, with three teams working in eight-hour shifts. We can assure you the aquatics center will be finished on time.”
