To become super power in World Badminton is India's aim New Delhi, Mar 26: India has its sights firmly set on becoming a major international hub for World badminton, and Asian Championships that begins here on April 12 will underline the growing stature of the country, believe the organisers. The Asian Championships will witness stars like Olympic champion Lin Dan, Taufiq Hidayat among others to fight it out against Indian shuttlers like Anup Sridhar and Chetan Anand, who have certainly made their presence felt at the World stage, although not on consistent basis. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) president V K Verma is confident that the way India has emerged in the World badminton, the international community will not take long to figure out the importance of India for the game. Verma said the Indian Open, which has become a regular feature in the country, will also grow in stature although, there is still time to put it along side the All England Championship. ''We want India to become the first choice for major international badminton events in the world and over the last couple of years, we have successfully hosted events that have left the World body to notice our presence,'' Verma said today. ''The Siri Fort stadium which will host the Asian Championships is a newly built state-of-the art venue and I have invited federations from across the World to be here and witness the tournament and the infrastucture that we have here.'' he added. ''All England Championship is a world renowned event and Indian Open is of course getting good response ever since it came into the scene. ''We need eyeballs to make the sport grow and Indian Open will become a fiercely competetive event just like the All England Championship.'' Not only the facilities that India boasts of, but the performance of country's shuttlers, which has been going north, makes it even more difficult for the World body to ignore the emergence of India. ''For the first time in history of Thomas Cup (men's)and the Uber Cup (women's), India was ranked seventh and not long back, they (Indians) were not even amongst the top 20,'' reminded Verma. ''We have such good infrastructure in India that can be compared to even the best in the world and with Delhi ready with a world class venue, we would like it to become the Capital of Asian Badminton,'' he said. (hmmm, didn't they had a blackout of the gym where the India was held last year?) ''We have hosted the Asian Junior Championships, then we had the World Badminton Championships, the Indian Open Grand Prix and now we will have the Asian Championships. ''All these events have made us believe in ourselves and that is why we are more confident than ever before.'' The first Asian Badminton Champion, Dinesh Khanna foresees a better future for Indian shuttlers and said the current breed of players have a far better footing than what it used to be some years back. He said Saina Nehwal has done a world of good to the Indian badminton and added that under the watchful eyes of Pullela Gopichand, the yound breed is getting the best guidance to make them the World beaters. ''Times have certainly changed. Badminton is no longer the sport that it used to be, it has a a huge popularity. ''We have had players who have done alot for the nation. But Saina's emergence has made it an even more popular sport in India. ''There are many young shuttlers who are doing really well at the domestic and have shown great promiose. ''P V Sindhu is just one of the many names who have the ability to make it big at the international stage. She is just 15 plus and is a sub-junior. He has a good height and fitness. ''Pullela Gopichand is also going a fanstastic job and under his guidance I am sure India will bring out more names that the World would reckon with,'' said Khanna, who won the first Asian Championships way back in 1965 in Lucknow.
India trying to host a Super Series tournament Badminton Authority of India (BAI) president V K Verma has confirmed that India is trying to host a Super Series tournament in near future. The ongoing Asian Championship together with forth coming Commonwealth Games may decide if India indeed can do so. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...tournament-soon-Verma/articleshow/5782615.cms
Asian Badminton Championship All matches on TV court will be telecasted live on state sports TV channel - DD Sports. Unfortunately I will be at my workdesk so won't be able to record a single match :crying:. But atleast given the coverage of this channel, no Indian fan will miss the tournament.
India to host a Super Series tournament soon . Perhaps, India would be selected to host a Super Series tournament very soon. Great to see Saina Nehwal, and Jwala Gutta, V. Diju, and others doing well at recent tournaments. .
Top Indian players don't discuss problems: Badminton coach IANS, Apr 16, 2010, 06.25pm IST NEW DELHI: After India's disappointing performance in the men's singles at the Badminton Asia Championships, the country's foreign coach Atik Jauhari has listed reasons ranging from injuries, independent training programmes of players, temperament, and the "lack of x-factor" for the poor showing. The Indonesian master coach was at a loss for words to explain why experienced players like Anup Sridhar and Arvind Bhat lost on the first day of the championships except saying there is little he could say as the two follow their own training programme and do not discuss problems with him. The two seniormost players were out on the opening day itself and Parupalli Kashyap was the lone survivor who lived to fight another day. Kashyap, ranked World No. 30 and seeded 13 here, pulled off two fine victories before losing to seventh seeded Yun Hu in the pre-quarterfinals. Sridhar and Bhat are also injury-prone. Bhat, ranked 36, missed the All-England Open Championships and the Swiss Open because of an ankle injury. Bhat did not appear fully fit in his second-round loss to Korean Ji Hoon Hong on Wednesday. *Full article taken from The Times of India.com -- http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...blems-Badminton-coach/articleshow/5821754.cms
Hope that Sridhar and Bhat will be ready (injury-free) for the 2010 Thomas Cup . IMHO, if players are injured, they should not compete. They should only return to compete after a full recovery from injury. Let's hope that Sridhar and Bhat will be ready(injury-free) for the 2010 Thomas Cup. Australia and Indonesia are in the same group with India. On paper, Indonesia is the tough one to beat in this group. .
Where will be the location? Hope BWF reconsider the decision again.. In the ABC championships in New Delhi.. there are so many flies though
Super Series in India could be held at Sri Fort Sports Complex . The Super Series in India could probably be held at the renovated Sri Fort Sports Complex. .
