I strongly disagree with this, just wanna know other peoples thoughts, the reason the olympic committe dropped it is because they say badminton is only known in very few countrys, also the drop will be replaced with chess possibly? WTF!!!!!!!! rubbish, thats my thougts. the head of the olympic sports committe should be fired lol, not litrally feel free to comment

No it's true. Badminton will be dropped after 2008 OG, because it's so boring. After all, people used to play it with a cocktail glass in their other hand
Haha, that's preposterous. Badminton was no less developed in England and they host one of the largest tournaments. But indeed, many people were not so fond of the idea that the Games should be held in London. So, contrary to the idiotic comments of YouTubers that "China sucks" and whatnot, I would have to believe that the person who tried to snatch at the Olympic torch might have been dissatisfied with the notion of the Olympics coming to London, and wanted to eliminate that "Olympic feeling" by attacking the torch.

Before opening this thread i was "damn i hope thats a late april fools!". Aslong as they keep badminton and don't put ultimate-frisbee in the olympics im happy.
Nothings wrong with it(as far as i know), though i do think it would be more intersting if you combined it with Archery....
Badminton, as an Olympic sport, is not really free from danger of being dropped . Greetings, I do not wish to spoil Oldhand's April Fool's Day joke (which was effective ) but it wasn't a joke back in July 2005 when the International Olympic Committee met to decide which sports were to be dropped or to be included. Baseball and Softball were dropped from the schedule of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as they failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. It was revealed that badminton was just in the brink of elimination in that vote. Badminton did not do well at the Athens Olympics 2004. We were just lucky that Badminton is a popular sport in the UK. I did mention about this scare in a thread about 2 years ago that Badminton, as an Olympic sport, is not really free from danger from being dropped. We really need to promote and support Badminton. Who's Your Daddy, Eh? It would be very very difficult for the International Olympic Committee to throw badminton out. Currently, only a few sports fully meet the many and varied qualification criteria for classification as an 'Olympic Sport'. The requirements are tough, especially those relating to geographical spread and governing structures. Football, volleyball, swimming, cycling and (lately) badminton and tennis are examples of geographically widespread sports - this implies acceptance on the world's many continents (and not necessarily a universal popularity). None of these sports can be voted out, much less arbitrarily discarded, by the IOC. Equestrian events, fencing and (lately) hockey are examples of geographically restricted sports - few nations have practitioners, much less competitors or competition schedules. Any of these sports can be voted out by the IOC - however, we must accept that a few members are 'strong' enough to torpedo any such move. Cricket, for instance, has neither a measurable following nor a graded competitive structure in continental South America or North America. As such, its popularity in India (Asia), England (Europe), South Africa (Africa) and Australia (Oceania) do not allow its classification as an Olympic Sport. However, using the West Indies (and, recently, Canada), North America can be cited as the fifth continent - this has allowed cricket to make a case for itself, albeit weak, before the IOC. (To illustrate further, if Canada or South Africa were to pull out of international hockey, I'd imagine a very swift exit for the sport from the Olympic arena.) Like it or not, our beloved badminton as an Olympic sport is here to stay. Now, if the scientists on Antarctica would play it, we couldn't be unseated at all

Oldhand...... You will never know. Now that the Olympics has become as a big entertainment business and as a big television program, like the Formula 1 Grand Prix Racing; if our Badminton is not regarded as a popular sport to watch by the non-Badminton-playing community, then I wouldn't be surprised that it would be axed from the Olympics.
