Say I am a club player trying out a new tube of shuttles and everyone agrees that they are too fast.

How can we slow the shuttles down to make it playable?

    1) Internationals will tip maybe 4 feathers at their ends.Shuttle is not damaged.

    2) Oldies will insert the handle into the rim and twist the handle so as to widen the diameter of the
    rings.

    3) Some will just fluff up the feathers with a swipe of the racquet.

    4) Now I heard that it is possible to hold each shuttle thumb out and 3 fingers inside the shuttle and twist the junction of the feathers and the stem with those 4 fingers.

Does method 4 work and is the shuttle playable after that?

Do pros know sth we don't know and are able to perform 4) undetected?

Just your experience will be much appreciated.

you didn't include the dirty tricks

use your thumb and press the stem from the outside where the first thread nearest to the cork

if have time press twice, the opposite side

serve low or set up a good netting so your opponent will lift

and you will have the advantage of a 300kph smash!

that applies to fast and faster shuttle.

for slow shuttle using the dirty tactic

you should press the stem out from inside

    press 2 or 3 also 2 side

flick serve or use everything you got to send the shuttle to the back court

sneak to the mid court i am sure the return will be somewhere there!

    enjoy!

1st - 3rd are deliberate and easy to detect; not utilized by advanced players.
4th is ok if one has really dexterous fingers otherwise I'd have to agree w/ pBmMalaysia's thumb press technique due to its efficiency but the execution has to beat the clock to conceal the sleight of hand action.

Re-oriented the shuttle is what I call it. Everyone does their own tricks, I don't mind, at the end of the day, there's only so much that one can do and it still boils down to long hours of practice and perfecting everything that can be mastered in the playbook and then throw in something unique.

When one plays with a bad shuttle and continues it for a little while just to grasp its intricacies, ultimately our knowledge of handling a tipsy shuttle matures to a whole new level that when we switch back to good ol' regular shuttles, it just feels so sweet. Just like we do after so much time with a 160g+ training racket.

Will it work with a hard brand new shuttle especially one as stiff as a Yonex?

i'm just asking to save myself Rm5, I've already tried it on used RSLs and it behaves as described.

Don't mind if I ask is the effect temporary or does the same shuttle continue to behave like that afterwards?

    Sifu!

Your indepth knowledge on the subject is very errr admirable :D

the first technique also deadly when you force the opponent to lift. Often It may go wide or long. Smash not needed in those cases

sorry i just realize i missed out something in my post

after you mentioned it may go wide or long.

i should have include the following:

after the thumb press on the stem

the shape would be out or may affect your serve

your need your 3 fingers to work and shape it back

Oh c'mon boss, he must've already knew that, ha ha. Anyways, I used RSL Classic Tourney 95% of the time. 5% is when someone brings in their birds!

I may add though, we do it in the spirit of fun. It's like: ''see how I'll alter this and how you'll alter that'' and still be able to discover new ways of intercepting an unpredictable bird.

i see, for you its a mind game

    and thats good.

rsl is a slow shuttle here, at least in my area

instead of tampering the shuttle which i never teach my players

i usually ask them to change tactic

its more fun and they get better results!

Tipping the feathers inwards at their ends

    .
Tipping the feathers inwards at their ends

Yes; firstly, tip every 4th feather at their ends inwards to check/test the speed.

If speed is still not correct, then tip 8 feathers at their ends (alternate feathers).

If speed is still not correct, then tip all feathers at their ends.

First thing you should do is actually test the shuttle to make sure it is fast. Here in Taiwan and when I played in Vancouver I was always amazed at how slow the shuttles were. I remember on a few occassions someone would insist on playing with proper speed shuttles and nobody could cope with the fact that you actually had to use some control to keep from blasting the shuttles past the back line during play at the net. In fact they would complain bitterly about the speed of the shuttles. Not surprising I guess, it would kind of be like learning to play soccer with a beach ball in some remote country and then moving to Europe and finding out you don't know how to play.

pBm Malaysia, sorry if I've misattributed this to you but it's not a mind game.... It's cheating. Now if you're doing it in the spirit of fun or just goofing around then that's fine but then you're not really playing badminton are you?

the mind games refer to rslvictorsotx post, please read carefully, there are more post in front

its more a dirty trick then cheating but nobody minds if you call it cheating.

so whether its cheating or dirty tricks,

do you still think if one side uses this trick, the other is still having fun?

player cheats to win and that winning for them i am sure is fun!

but of course those losers or any losers even if not cheated

i am sure they are not having fun

yet its still a game of baddy everywhere!
