:D So that they bring a level of vitality and a truly international colour to proceedings; and to help push the game to new frontiers. If you've been following the IPL, then you know how idol-crazy the Indian population can get; that translates into big spending; it also translates into greater exposure for the game and a whole new following.

The higher the level of play, the more exciting the better the chances of eventual success of the league. In fact, I'd encourage tantrums, prima-donna-isms, eyeball-to-eyeball confrontations and more! :D As abans so rightly pointed out, these leagues are all about entertainment and conversion. The more the excitement, the better... ;) :D

So far, no Indonesian players have been approached....but talking to some of International players...it wont be easy to attract them as they are not fancy playing in India....so big money will be the key.

With no offence to anyone here,I am just stating what happened.....That big money is the thing that brought about all the changes in the cricketing world,It made cricketers say that they will not play for the national team or retire from the game just to play in the league..It made associations to let them play in the league....It completely changed the whole scenario

As far as International players are concerned there is ample amount of time as the auctioning would be held in March....but before, that the main thing is franchise auctioning...the money which is going to be spent on players is determined from franchise auctioning...If the franchises are bought at out of proportionate costs....then the max purse used for the player auctioning can be expected to be great.

If Kevin Peterson, the best player in England cricket team is fighting against England Cricket Board for letting him play in IPL, with the money involved, I'd love to see Lin Dan fight with China Badminton Governing body to let him play in IBL, dumping other major superseries! Scenes like these should be common, if IBL is a success.

For Lin Dan to commit to anything, not just getting him motivated, is tricky and fairly difficult. He's made clear now family comes first to him, and he's playing in the CBSL to repay his team Bayi. What's even more telling is, during the recent book-signing event for his autobiography, he's said he is past caring winning or losing titles and more keen on promoting the sport and encouraging others to excel by his example. He has even been approached to appear in TV programs, including soap opera, and movies which he has turned down as he didn't find the roles offered suitable, not to mention the usual business ventures that are in discussion.

With so many other attractions and distractions pulling him in all directions, I wonder how he is going to re-focus on badminton at the end of his six-month leave. Hopefully he means it when he said, apart from his family, among all the activities, badminton is still his first love. Ya, but how to motivate him again? Money alone won't do, I'm afraid.

I'm 100% sure LD wont show up in IBL as he probably has tons of other commitments.
If LD lacks motivation then it is better he just retires and become an ambassador. A person with no motivation will just bring negatives to the game (walkovers, half hearted playing, giving up etc etc)

Already 18 corporates has showed interest in bid. But still 12 to 14 more bids are expected to arrive in another 10-15 days.

Quite Interesting.:) .. Even Bollywood actors /producers were asked to take part.;)

    Excerpts:

In IBL, the eight cities in the race are Delhi, Bombay, Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune and Nagpur. The organisers claim that IBL, with $1 million in prize money, would be the richest prize-money league in badminton. As many as 66 foreign and Indian players are expected to take part in the league. Auction of IBL players is scheduled for March. The league is approved by the Badminton World Federation and the Badminton Asia Confederation.

A spokesman for Sporty said the company has held its first round of discussions with "five leading Bollywood producer-actors

scorpion1 ,the link you posted is not working,so I am reposting

    some details:

*The proposed Indian Badminton League (IBL) - modelled on cricket's cash-rich, franchise-based Indian Premier League (IPL) - has received 18 expressions of interest from corporates for its franchises so far, said its organiser, adding that they expect 12-14 more initial bids over the next 15 days.

    *
Chadha, CEO of Sporty Solutionz, IBL's commercial partner, said eight cities are in the fray and the organisers will finally settle on six franchises that get the best bids. The league will be held from June 24 to July 11, 2013. "The base price (for each franchise) is 20 crore($4 million). An equal amount would be spent on marketing and maintenance cost with incremental proportion.

    *
We are expecting Hyderabad to go for at least 50 crore($10 million). This is just the licensing fee. But the amount will go up if you add franchise maintenance and marketing costs,"

    *
As of now, the Hyderabad franchise has attracted the maximum number of bids followed by Bangalore and Mumbai. "It is much more than we had expected," he added.

    *
In IBL, the eight cities in the race are Delhi, Bombay, Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune and Nagpur.

    *
Sporty Solutionz has bought the rights to organise IBL for seven years. As opposed to IPL, which is run byBCCI which hires vendors such as IMG to do the job, in IBL, Sporty has paid the Badminton Association of India for rights to run the show. "It is a multi-crore contract," Chadha said but didn't disclose financial details.(wow I didn't know this,I thought BAI is the one running it.May be BAI does not want to take risk).

    Bollywood mix

A spokesman for Sporty said the company has held its first round of discussions with "five leading Bollywood producer-actors" who may either pick up franchises or sponsor the league.
(I don't think IBL can become popular without bollywood, may be SHAH RUKH KHAN)

    *
Interestingly, badminton is becoming popular in India with Indian players such as Nehwal doing well in the game, upsetting Chinese hegemony. The game has been adjudged by ESPN as the favourite game for Indians 'to play and watch'.

*While in the past, Indian players used to travel to Malaysia and Indonesia to train, many East Asian players are now keen to train in Hyderabad and other Indian cities. The turf war between badminton racket sellers such as Yonex and new entrants such as Li Ning Co (owned by Chinese icon and gymnast Li Ning) for market share in India have also contributed to East Asian interest in the game in India. Many of the sponsors are those of the IPL as well, said Chadha.

*Sporty said as in IPL, franchises have to pay a fee to IBL, player fees and bear marketing and maintenance costs of the team. "Franchises are expected to pledge at least 100 crore over five years," Chadha said. He didn't reveal more financial details. Unlike in IPL, IBL franchises can name their teams after companies and can sell the title.

*"We will offer franchises 50% of our media rights value, 50% of sponsorships value ... all that will be equally divided among six franchises," Chadha said. He hopes IBL to take off in a big way in India. "After all, it is something that isn't a cheap Chinese export," he said.

    EXCERPTS:

Sporty Solutionz CEO Ashish Chadha said, "We are thrilled with the brilliant response from India Inc and I would like to thank each one of them for supporting badminton. We are confident that the IBL will usher in a successful business model for the sport and take it to greater heights."

IBL governing council member Pullela Gopichand said, "The IBL heralds a new era in Indian badminton. It will provide a great opportunity for our players to play along with the best players of the world and learn from them."

[h=1]Indian Badminton League receives 29 bids for teams[/h]
    http://articles.timesofindia.indiat...0_1_pvp-ventures-indian-badminton-league-bids

    EXCERPTS:

The inaugural Indian Badminton League (IBL), scheduled to be held in the month of June, has attracted immense interest not only from among corporates but also top cricketers. TOI has learnt that six city-based teams in the league have attracted 29 bids, with the Sahara Group, PVP Ventures, Ness Wadia and one star Indian cricketer having bought four of these teams.
Sahara has bought Lucknow while Ness Wadia's bid for the Mumbai team has been "almost finalized".

PVP Ventures, which made a valiant bid to buy the Deccan Chargers IPL team, has made a successful bid for the Hyderabad franchise. "Our rules are clear. We are not opting for the highest bidder, rather we are looking at the best bidder.

"In the interest of the sport we are looking at the franchise on the basis of their connectivity to cities. For example, PVP Ventures is a big name in the South Indian film industry. The franchise will ensure the presence of several top actors to lend glamour to the event," sources said.

Though the six cities -- Hyderabad, Mumbai, Lucknow, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore -- have been finalized, the buyers for the Delhi-based franchise has not yet been finalized and the final list of owners and teams will be revealed within a week.

The world's top players have confirmed their participation in the league. "Several prominent international badminton personalities are also involved. Given the huge amount to be earned for participation, almost all top players are keen on competing," sources said.

Each team will have 12 players with a cap on four foreigners. The base price for the top five ranked players is $50,000 and for the next set is $25,000.

Interestingly, popular TV networks have also bid for the rights. "We have received bids from ESPN-Star, Ten Sports and Sony Television networks. Within the next two weeks we will finalize the bids. After completion of modalities we will conduct a player auction. We will ensure that two top players will be there in all the teams," the source said.

[h=1]Ashish Chadha interview: "The IBL will create a new benchmark in badminton"[/h]

    http://www.sportskeeda.com/2013/02/...ibl-will-create-a-new-benchmark-in-badminton/

    EXCERPTS:

There has been plenty of speculation on the Indian Badminton League and how it will influence Indian and world badminton. While India might not be a badminton power yet, the performance of some of its players, and the prospects of an IPL-style league, lend some weight to the possibility that June-July of 2013 might change the face of badminton forever. Ashish Chadha, CEO of Sporty Solutionz, the company in charge of the IBL and Commercial Partner of BAI, is upbeat about the progress so far. Excerpts from an interview:

What has been the progress on the IBL?

The franchisees will be announced on March 1st. The franchisee finalisation is going on. The auction will be on March 24th. The first franchisee meet will be on May 15th. We have yet to finalise the title sponsor. We needed the franchise partners on board first. To be honest, the response is better than what I’d expected. The first and biggest challenge was to set perpetual partners. We’ve got those six partners. Fifty to sixty percent of the work has been taken care of.

Did you commission any research to furnish figures, especially of TV viewership of badminton, which would help in your presentation to sponsors?

There was no pedestal (to work towards); badminton hasn’t seen a huge amount of sponsorship worldwide. We based our presentations (to potential franchises) on concept selling. We’re presenting this as sports entertainment. Every city will have a carnival atmosphere. If our clients want to get TAM (Television Audience Measurement) ratings, they’ll do it themselves. We have an in-house research team for our data.

There are no benchmarks. Over the last three years, badminton has grown. All three broadcasters are interested. We haven’t asked for a formal pitch. We will decide on the broadcaster on March 1st. As far as production goes, our base is covered because we have in-house production capability.

Who are the players we are likely to see in the IBL?

The national association of Malaysia, Indonesia and some in Europe have issued their No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to players. China too has issued its NOC. All the top players will be part of the IBL. There is not a single top player who will not come. With badminton, you only need the approval of the national associations, unlike in other sports where you have to approach every player.

Will the IBL have higher prize money than the leagues of Indonesia and China?

The base price of top players is USD 50,000 – that’s more than the amount they stand to win in Super Series events. The Indonesian league does not offer that kind of money. The China league has good money, but the format is different… the clubs have no permanent foreign players. In the IBL, the team will remain the same for three years; the next auction will be during the third year.

How do you foresee the IBL impacting badminton?

The IPL created a new benchmark in cricket; the IBL can create a new benchmark in badminton. The two sports are different. But the IBL will change the profile of badminton worldwide. Badminton has five or six sponsors now; here we are increasing the pool to 40. Just imagine the impact. We’re getting some (sponsors) who have never invested in badminton. Once they see success, they will turn into sponsors for the BWF (Badminton World Federation) or BAI (Badminton Association of India). The sponsorship kitty will grow.

As far as the impact in India goes, badminton for the first time will be played on a professional level. Potential players will see the sport as a likely career. Then there are associated professions, such as coaches, trainers, management companies, etc.

Will the IBL be telecast worldwide?

The eyeballs are going to be more than in cricket. We’re talking to every broadcaster in South East Asia. Totally, we’re looking at 100 countries. There will be global viewership.

It seems badminton will grow multifold in India in the coming years. Happy to hear this news. :)

Please give the bid to ESPN STAR....It has the maximum viewership....It would reach to more people.
The thing badminton badly requires in India now is that viewership...

I had already mailed couple of responsible guys listed on BAI website for selecting an appropriate channel. Also requested them to telecast all the matches of all superseries' live, including qualifiers.

One out of two mails bounced.

Yupp, the article exactly stated my fear.
Badminton badly needs viewership in India. And according to me only ESPN can do that.
Now another interesting thing is that, PSY's gonna perform there.....ahh! may be not true.
The article has actually mentioned Indian medals in london olympics to three, while India has infact won 6 medals.

But viewership is the first and foremost thing required for badminton in India to increase it's popularity.

    Badminton eyes passage to India

    http://cphpost.dk/sport/badminton-eyes-passage-india

    EXCERPTS:

Denmark’s list of sporting millionaires in five years’ time could very well include Caroline Woznaicki, Christian Eriksen, Thorbjørn Olesen and ... Tine Baun?

Yes, you heard right. Denmark’s top female badminton player, who is currently ranked #7 in the world, could potentially be raking it in thanks to an ambitious badminton project taking place in India at the moment.

The Indian Badminton League (IBL), which is scheduled to launch in June, could shoot Denmark’s badminton players to wealth and fame. The league will consist of six teams, each with eleven doubles and singles players.

Each team will be allowed to have four foreign players on its books, and the organisers are confident their record-setting prize funds will attract the world’s top players to the league. The potential earnings will far outstrip what Baun and her compatriots earn in Denmark.

In a country that favours cricket, organisers knew they had to take a different approach when promoting the sport.

“It’s not seen as a glossy, sexy sport,” Ashish Chadha, the CEO of sports promotion company Sporty Solutionz, which conceived the IBL, told BBC News. Bollywood performances will entertain the supporters between games and the aim is to create a carnival type atmosphere at the games.

Chadha said that he had even secured the South Korean pop star Psy, most famous for the mega hit ‘Gangnam Style’, to perform.

Badminton is quickly gaining popularity in India thanks to the success of home-grown players like Saina Nehwal, who won one of India’s three medals at the 2012 London Olympics and is currently ranked second in the women’s world rankings.

Aside from Baun, the top Danish men’s, women’s and mixed doubles pairs, who are ranked #1, #3 and #4 respectively, will all be hopeful of an invitation from the league in the near future.

Finally.. "Gangnam" has found a place in IBL now. I hope " Why this kolaveri di" team also will find a place in IBL ... Ha ha..:D;):p:)
