I tore my ACL over a year ago. Believe me when I say, get it repaired if you want to continue playing sports. It might be expensive but you get to be active and enjoy an uncomplicated life. Mines cost around 30k with therapy, but it was covered by insurance. I had it reconstructed a few months after that, and I didn't start playing badminton till about a few months ago. I tore I think the same way Julia did here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHfR2kPtyZs. Ever since I came back I noticed I began using my back hand a lot. I still can't run, there's still pain from my knee, but not that bad. I'm sure with time and more exercise my knee will be very good.
i also torn my ACL and had it reconstructed about 8 years ago and now i am doing just fine now days. sure after the surgery, you have to go thru rehab and muscle/fitness training to get back into shape (approx about 8 months to 12 months). because after the injury, the first muscle to go is your thigh muscle and it will take a while for it to get rebuild back up. of course, at first you still have to take it easy but after a while it will be just as good. maybe you'll need to wear a knee brace for few years before you get comfortable without it. ACL surgery is becoming a fairly popular percedure among all athelts now. just to think if football players can come back after such surgery, so can badminton players. good luck.
Playing w/out ACL repair w/ knee braces..... Torn all my ligaments at age 15 in gymnastic 19 yrs ago. Doctor told me I will be lucky if I can walk normal again....I didn't believe HIM & I just Prayed the Lord......every night to give me strength so I can play any sports again..........The worst part of the surgery is that my Surgeon didn't have time to complete the surgery and left my ACL untouch.... I just started playing badminton again 18 yrs later, now being playing for the past 9 months.......check me out, I am the one in green short, red pant: Blue shirt then Red shirt...Got 3 place this time around. So Never give up on YOurself, Never give up HOPE, Never Surrender to the things You love in LIFE....and Stay away from Negative People....!!!!!! Yeah, 19 yrs ago Surgery look like someone CUT YOU OPEN...LIKE MURDER SURGERY.......PLEASE CHOOSE YOUR DOCTOR WISELY....!!!! only specialist..........Never rush your knee......I wish my parents have a little common sense when I was YOUNG!!!!! can't blame them...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RmrsMwp0C0
Superbird, hate to tell you this but present arthroscopic surgery is way more advanced than 19 years ago. So you really can't compare now to then. But if you had your operation done by a nonspecialist, then I can sympathise. Now, only very rarely would such a scar be warrranted. I haven't seen a scar like that for ages.
Best of luck to your plan.. ..Yes, i'm a witness & i've seen and played with SuperBird and what he shared are real. He plays all out like he has no major injury, until you talk to him. His passion is definitely there. I hope the knee holds up until whenever you're ready for your surgery. Looking at the pics & thinking you'll have to go under the knife, again, make me cringe a bit, sorry.. Good luck & best wishes, SuperBird!.. Anyway, Cheung's advises are ones to take note of because he himself is a medical practitioner (for those who don't know).
But, you do get less tendinitis. Hey, one thing I forgot to mention is that even if you did have DBL surgery, there is always the chance of needing repeat arthroscopic surgery in later months as new problems can develop within the joint.
I know, now Medicine is more advance, except is still slow in the ACL department. The wayz I am running on the floor, I don't think I need an ACL anytime soon, I might be too fast........if i have an option, I will go with Double bundle-->too much twisting in badminton, at least you have 2 ligaments instead of 1, If 1 go out, you still have 1 more left in there. It was started in Japan---so that the place I will travel to, to get it done if I have the MONEY in the near future if my knee burst out on ME. Otherwise, goto to see DR. FU......He the USA pioneer.....done over 1000's of em.
anyone has had a torn ACL, not repaired and still play badminton? I've just found out that my right knee ACL has been torn. I've had five identical injury events within the last four years but kept playing about 7-8 hours a week at a, let's say, higher than what is commonly known- advanced level, singles and doubles. Should I have known that it was the ACL, probably I'd have taken some measures to fix the problem right away but I thought it was the MCL or the LCL; speculations supported by various doctors [I've seen one after every injury event and only the first one told me it was the ACL, after a superficial look at my knee, so I did not trust him]. All my injuries happened while I was already tired before even deciding to go play- I've ignored my body signals and I regret it now. The most recent injury event happened a month ago, the very next day after returning from a two week vacation. My right knee just caved in again, this time while outside the game [I just made a simple step/leap forward to pick up the shuttle from the floor] and with a tight knee support on- bummer!!! Now I have the indubitable confirmation of the diagnosis that I've feared- ACL tear! But!... This does not mean that I need surgery, and do not intend to go for it. As I've succeeded playing with a torn ACL for so long with only an elastic knee support, I think I can continue playing with the assistance of a custom made CTI ligament brace. Given my particulars I think that reconstructive surgery is not for me [8-12 months of inactivity would kill me. Anybody can share a simmilar experience? How is it? cheers!
My daughter destroyed her ACL in a local tournament 3+ years ago. She had the patella tendon graft repair done. Spent the next 12 months getting match fit, played for 2 more years and her knee gave way during a match. She has now had 2 further surgeries, (it turns out that the original graft is still intact but is, and always has Ben too long.). She has now had a revision and some extra work done and is busy with rehab. She expects to get back playing in December and return to full fitness by March. Incidentally did you know that ladies are twice as likely to suffer this injury as men?
