Good, I see a bright future for Sun Yu. After her disappointment in the WJC despite beating Tai TY, followed by her qualification round defeat by Thai prodigy Jindapon, Sun Yu has shown resilience and determination to quickly earn her first international title in the Macau Open GPG. Hope CBA gives her more opportunities to play and we might well see her rise to within top 10 in a year's time.
After scoring another win over Busanan Ongumrungpan, Sun Yu ended her Malaysian adventure with a loss to Tine Baun in the Round of 16. I am glad that Sun Yu got the chance to play Baun before her retirement. Baun has been the standard bearer for tall WS players. Now it's up to Sun Yu and Sindhu. Sun Yu is transitioning from using her physical advantage to overwhelm fellow juniors like Busanan to a more controlled style in order to contend with the higher calibre players. There will surely be growing pains. Hope she will get more opportunities to find her way.
Yes, I'd love to see Sun Yu win her second GPG title and quickly rise to be the third CHN WS after LXR and WYH in the absence of WX for the time being. Not improbable nor wishful thinking on my part - she has the potential, the height and reach, and the right attitude as I see it. Of course, she is still young and has to continue working on her game and strengthen her fitness.
We may have to be a bit more patient with Sun Yu. The Macao GPG title was for Han Li to take but she lost to Deng Xuan unexpectedly. Sun Yu was lucky there. The field is a lot stronger at the Swiss Open next week. I hope that Sun Yu got a good look of Tine Baun's performance at AE. TB's court coverage is something that Sun Yu should definitely learn from.
Hi, how do you ensure Sun Yu is a Manchu? Are Zhang Ning and LYB Manchus? Even though many Manchus live in Liaoning, but according to statistic 80% of Liaoning people are Han Chinese though. Cheers
saw her in action in person a few hours ago...beating Juliane Schenk...i should say her overall standard is equal to that of JS.... -
Sun Yu still lacks the power at the senior level. In her junior days, she easily overshelmed opponents with her power. So it has been a tricky transition for her entering the senior circuit. She has to find new ways to win before her power gets up to the senior level. One thing that she has attained is patience. Realizing that she just can't simply kill off her opponents, she settles down on grueling rallies to etch out points. That is not easy for a young person. Sun Yu is doing a good job at it. Sun Yu's time is yet to come. Hopefully that She can eventually build up her power game and avoid injuries in the process.
Today Sun Yu's defeat of Soldier Schenk was a pleasant surprise to me, hope it's not a flash in the pan. Her opponent next round is the wily, deceptive and relatively more experienced (for being a few years longer in the international circuit), Tai Tzu Ying. Not sure if Sun Yu is able to read and adjust her game accordingly to deal with her instead of relying solely on her straightforward attacking game though she is now into constructing her rally a bit more. Personally, I hope to see her raise her game another level soon to match the power and prowess of the top 10 players. The present state of the CHN WS could use the addition of another top-notch player of the highest caliber; it certainly takes time, it's barely (or just over?) a year since her debut in the adult international circuit. Frankly, I was at first quite impressed with her when she took her maiden title, the Macau Open GPG, just months into her international career but since then she has been floundering until today when she unexpectedly collected the biggest scalp under her belt of Juliane Schenk in R2 of the SIN Open'13. Let's hope it's the harbinger of many notable scalps to come, including more title wins of course.
Whatever the outcome today or in the near future (possibly within one year ahead), just have patience with Sun Yu... she seems to have everything to become a great player incl. the physical factors (height, fitness) and the best training milieu of being a part of CHN squad. She probably just needs some more time to sharpen her capabilities and further tourney experiences to mold her into a dependable first class player! Another Li Xuerui in making? Expect to see more from this young prodigy.
From http://www.badzine.net/news/singapore-open-sf-–-no-‘haze’-arduous-win-for-tommy/26023/ Big words from the big little girl. Too bad that we won't see her for a while. Let's see if she can take advantage of the tired bodies from WC and get some good results in September.
In the latest BWF ranking, Sun Yu is up 28 places to 45. She needs one or two more good showings to avoid playing in qualifications. Sun Yu will play in the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, July 6-17 2013 where she will face challenges from Sung Ji hyun, Tai Tzu Ying, and Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, among others.
I just found out that at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan July 6-17 2013, in the Team Semifinal, CHN vs TPE, Sun Yu beat Tai Tzu Ying convincingly, 21-8 and 21-15, her third victory over Tai TY in as many encounters, the previous two being in the semifinal of the WJC'12 and QF of the SIN Open'13 SS. Incidentally,as we've known, Sun Yu created a major upset in R2 of the aforementioned SIN Open'13 by overcoming the formidable Juliane Schenk in two straight sets before going on to eliminate Tai TY the next round, and was only stopped by her illustrious teammate LXR in the SF. I daresay Sun Yu is on the rise, hopefully it's not premature for me to say so. Anyway, we'll have to wait until September and after for her to prove me right; the sooner the better if only because Wang Xin has been sidelined by injury since the LOG and Wang Lin has just retired, what with Wang Shixian still not quite out of her slump.
2013 China Open, Round 16 vs Saina Nehwal Finally, Sun Yu is showing promising signs. She displayed some Chen Long like quick moves on defence and started using her height for acute angle shots. Just hope that her body will hold up.
spot on. watching her play reminds me of Chen Long. tall heavy build, steep powerful shots, very good coverage but don't show a lot of flexibility and dynamics, solid skills but no fancies. maybe at this point she shows a little shakiness against good players. letting Saina craw back to level more than once. while she has a couple of lethal killer shots, there is still a issue of consistency. unfortunately, like CL, she is not exciting to watch. we need more of a LD or LCW type female players.
