PV Sindhu starts to leave Saina Nehwal’s shadow

    Sandeep Narayan

    http://www.mumbaimirror.com/index.a...8&contentid=20111216201112160201477651df7e106

The Saina Nehwal poster stares down intensely at anyone who enters the badminton courts of the National Sports Club of India. Standing a couple of feet away, getting ready for her first match in the Tata Open, is PV Sindhu. She pays no heed to the poster but no matter how much she tries the shadow of India's best woman badminton player looms above her at all times.

However, as she begins to dismantle her first-round opponent, Thu Huyen Le of Vietnam, the comparisons of her being the next Saina are slowly put to an end. Not because of her talent, but because she's the antithesis of Saina's style and yet still rules over the court with the same conviction.

At 5 feet and 10 inches, with a gangly frame, she might not have the quintessential frame for badminton but on court she is quite a livewire. Off the blocks, she moves fast on the court, virtually picks up anything near the net because of her height and looks to finish off points with winners, instead of long rallies ,with an un-retrievable half-smash. In 23 minutes she dispenses off Hyun le 21-11, 21-10.

The differences in rankings between the two, Sindhu is 42 while her opponent 170, notwithstanding, it was Sindhu's court coverage that makes one take notice. Rather than wasting energy in the power shots she focuses on winning smartly. In fact seeing her smash is actually a rarity.

The 16-year-old's logic, if you can win without it then why use it. Her coach further elucidates the reason. “She is still young for any heavy weight training. That is also why she focuses more on smart play rather than power play,” says her coach at the Gopichand academy MD Siyadutt.

Though she may not be chasing Saina's footsteps her goal this season is to qualify for the Olympics and for that she is playing a packed schedule till May. "We have her playing nearly all tournaments that will help ranking and hopefully she will get the desired ranking by May so she can qualify for the Olympics,” Siyadutt said.

The match ends and she is surrounded by her parents, both who were national level volleyball players in their time, and coach. The Saina poster is still there by the entrance but in the bigger picture its clearly out of focus.

Congratulations to Sindhu! She justified her seeding in this tournament. :)

It's time she took her form and talent to the next level. Although she has done well in Internationals and the odd GP, she has not put together any impressive run so far. She has that chance once again at the India Open GPG beginning December 20, at Lucknow.

Sindhu's examination of skill and temperament will begin in the very first round. Her first match will be against Pi Hongyan - no pushover!

    Sindhu signs off, deceptively yours

    Kabir Mandrekar
    Tue Dec 20 2011

    http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sindhu-signs-off-deceptively-yours/889928/

    Excerpts:

After her first round exit at the China Open in November, 16-year-old, World No 42 shuttler – PV Sindhu, in one of her long conversations with her father – PV Ramana, spoke of the change that she needed to bring about in her game. “She told me that her powerful smashes were rendered useless against the top-level international players. Longer-rallies was the answer,” said Ramana.

...an important rectification in her game that was evident in the Tata Open badminton final against fellow international – Sayali Gokhale.

The smash was kept in reserve. The focus was on thorough court coverage, skilful net play and well-disguised half-smashes, all conducted well enough to give her a 21-10, 20-22, 21-11 victory over a more experienced Sayali Gokhale.

...The weight training sessions have begun in the Gopichand Academy gymnasium and her monstrous presence on court was testament to that fact. Her legs appeared to be made of India rubber as she covered all four corners of the court with ease. Her first smash was at 13-8. Her drop shots were carefully played with finesse as she romped to a 21-10 win.

...“I definitely want to increase the strength in my legs and work on the new techniques that I have adopted. If I can repeat the performance next year, I will be very happy,” she said.

This is the stuff so reminiscent of Singapore's maestro Wong Peng Soon's days as a great player.
He's ability to hit all four corners of the court at will, excellent footwork and courtcraft and a steady defence placed him far ahead of his peers to earn him four All-England titles and as captain of Malaya's first victorious Thomas Cup team which baffled the competiton in England in 1949(?). He was a master of the "cat-and-mouse" game.

When he turned coach in his non-playing years, his trainees cursed and sweared that such a regiment was boring and uninteresting. So a number of them dropped out as they could not stomach this kind of "punishment" meted out by the great master.

Will Sindhu drop out or is she made of sterling character and discipline with the sole objective of becoming champion of the world in due course?

A very sweet and thoughtful interview with Sindhu just after she won the recent Tata Open International at Mumbai.

What would be an acceptable result for her at the India GPG?

She didn't say, did she? :D

It's interesting however to learn that she's still studying, attending college, albeit on the side. She lives weedays at the Academy where she trains, and takes private tuitions on the side to help with her studies, and travels home to her family on weekends. A very balanced head on young shoulders!

But the quote that really got me smiling was the way she said, without a trace of guile, "I wish that I would become world #1. Yaa." :D

PV SINDHU'S entry to qtr finals is a must and then beating porntip again would be a biggggggggggggg plus. though I still feel am rattled the way she was outclassed in the two super series is something of a worry. it is not a shame to loose but the way one looses.

There it is my worst fears came true , this girl has a mental problem , from 14-7 18-12 she can crash out and loose and the second game is a no nothing she should have taken care of the thai girl. maybe later she may improve but not at the moment, she is not worth the time. Sorry i may sound harsh but this is the realty

    Giraffe's legs fold!!

Sindhu lost to Sapsiree Taerattanachai in the R16 at the Indian Open GPG, 22-24, 7-21.

What went wrong for Sindhu in game 2? I could not view the game, but I wonder what exactly went wrong for her for her to fold up so easily in the second game.

I have also noted her unexpected defeat to Sapsiree in such a manner.

But having seen Sapsiree in action during the Singapore inaugural YOG and in earlier tournaments here, I have high praise for her fighting spirit. She was the YOG WS champion, I think after defeating her higher ranked CHN opponent.

Whether Sapsiree can defeat her top teammate Porntip is another matter. :D:D:D

No, no you are too harsh. :p She is still very young and indeed has great potential if she learns from the situation which adds on to ther experience in years to come. Sapsiree is older I think and has also been defeated before. She is the inaugural YOG champ.

...and if I'm not wrong, this is the first time it has happened that she folded so meekly. She normally loses in 3 hard-fought games, even to TTY and Salakjit, and knocked out Porntip recently as well.

Overall though, her results are in the upward graph. I think she will take her game to the next level within the next 3-4 months. She's a quick study; the question is, can her coaches keep up with her pace of learning, or will they let her down?
