First review of mega-hotel the Marina Bay Sands

A LUXURY luxury hotel in Singapore has stolen the title of the world's most expensive and wowed tourists with its unique design.

The Marina Bay Sands hotel is a $5 billion integrated resort with 55 levels, a huge infinity pool on top, an indoor canal, a museum shaped like a lotus flower, shops and restaurants, theatres, a museum and a casino.

The hotel’s design, which some have described as resembling three cricket stumps and topped with a boat-shaped deck, stands out so much that even local workers gaze up in awe at the towering structure.

The 10 million square-foot (929,000 square metre) Marina Bay Sands took over as the most expensive hotel to build from the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi, at an estimated cost of approximately $3.3 billion.

The hotel, which was built by the Las Vegas Corporation, screams extravagance. It includes 2560 rooms, including 18 different room types and 230 luxury suites.

For high rollers the Chairman suite costs from SG $17,000 ($14,444) per night and includes four bedrooms, two living rooms, steam and sauna facilities, a games room, bar, media room and a team of butlers.

Alternatively there's the Presidential suite which includes three bedrooms, an exercise room and massage area, baby grand piano and a butler.

For those seeking a more affordable stay the Atrium rooms, situated on the lower floors of the hotels, cost from around SG $359 ($304) per night.

    The SkyPark is the limit

Positioned to overlook the city on one side and the sea on the another, the view from the hotel can be spectacular depending on which side your room is on.

Sloping towers and straight legs connect at level 23 to form a single building. With the slope as steep as 26 degrees at some points, it is one of the most complex hotels ever built.

Perched up on the top of the hotel is the one hectare ‘SkyPark’, which spans the three towers of the hotel 200 metres above the sea.

The SkyPark is longer than the Eiffel Tower and is large enough to park four-and-a-half A380 jumbo jets.

With 12,400 square metres of space it includes a public observation deck and restaurants such as The Sky on 57 by chef Justin Quek.

It is also home to the Infinity Pool, one of the world’s largest outdoor pools at three times the length of an Olympic pool. It gives the illusion of the water extending to the horizon but the water actually spills over the edge into a catchment below.

There are also celebrity-chef restaurants helmed by the likes of Tetsuya Wakuda from Sydney, Mario Batali from New York, Wolfgang Puck from Los Angeles, Justin Quek from Singapore.

The hotel’s casino has four levels of gaming with an area of 15,000 square metres. It includes 600 gaming tables and over 1500 slot machines.

The hotel, now Singapore’s largest, is expected to attract over 70,000 visits a day and 18 million visitors a year.

Construction began in early 2007 with a new hotel floor built every four days, which the company says is the fastest pace ever for a development of this scale in the country.

Architect Moshe Safdie says the project, based on a deck of cards, was complex and had its challenges.

“I separated the hotel into three towers in order to avoid forming a wall separating the city from the sea. It’s a great homage to the sea,” Mr Safdie said.

Five well-known artists were commissioned to create works of art for the complex, including Antony Gormley’s 40 metre long sculpture made from 16,100 steel rods.

    How the hotel rates

With its unique shape and sheer size, the Marina Bay Sands is certainly the most eye-catching building in Singapore.

If, like me, you're lucky enough to score a room from the 20th floor upwards facing the city, you're sure to be treated to stunning views.

The $304-a-night Atrium rooms are quite spacious and comfortable and include automated curtains, a large flat-screen television, bath and shower as well as a range of toiletries.

However guests should be warned they may need earplugs – the air conditioning can be quite loud, and without it you’ll be sweltering.

To make the most of the experience guests should explore all the hotel has to offer including the Sky Park, shopping complex and casino.

All in all with great service, the pure luxury of the hotel and its convenient location, guests won't be disappointed.

The writer travelled to Singapore as a guest of the Marina Bay Sands hotel.

Pfizer invests US$100m to expand Singapore Nutrition Plant

    TODAY
    08 July 2010 2044 hrs

    By Travis Teo

SINGAPORE: Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has invested US$100 million (S$138m) to expand its Singapore Nutrition Plant, making it one of the largest worldwide.

The move will raise the facility's production capacity by 50 percent and boost its ability to supply products to key markets in Asia.

The size of the plant will increase from 46,500 square metres to almost 92,000 square metres. The expansion brings Pfizer's total investment in the plant to US$372 million.

The plant, which now contributes over 20 percent of demand for infant nutrition worldwide, will allow Pifzer to milk the potential in Asian markets.

Erica Mann, president and general manager of Pfizer Nutrition, said: "If you look at places like Vietnam, where you have significant urbanisation at the moment...look at places like Indonesia, where a similar sort of demographics is happening,...there are a number of very interesting markets in South East Asia."

With the expansion, the plant has hired another 100 staff, bringing the total headcount to 587. Among them, 120 employees are quality surveyors, who ensure that the products meet safety and quality standards.

The expansion will go some way to boost Singapore's biomedical field.

The Economic Development Board says the sector has the highest value-add per worker, at about S$700,000 in 2009.

That's more than six times that of a worker in the manufacturing sector.

And Singapore will do more to enhance its position as a manufacturing base.

Trade and Industry Minister, Lim Hng Kiang, said: "We need to continue to work closely with companies to further increase productivity, enhance operational efficiencies and strengthen their supply chains."

The infant nutrition market worldwide is expected to grow at some 10 percent to US$32 billion between 2009 and 2014.

This is almost a 10 percent growth from an estimated US$23 billion in 2009.

    S'pore may overtake China

    The Straits Times
    Jul 9, 2010

SINGAPORE may overtake China as Asia's fastest-growing economy this year, increasing the attractiveness of the city state's stocks and putting pressure on policy makers to check inflation with a stronger currency, reported Bloomberg News.

Gross domestic product of Singapore will rise 10.8 per cent in 2010, according to the median of 13 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey before the July 14 second- quarter GDP report.

By comparison, Goldman Sachs Group Inc, BNP Paribas and Macquarie Group Ltd have cut estimates for China to at most 10.1 per cent in recent weeks.

An acceleration in pharmaceutical output and the opening of two casino resorts boosted growth in the first half, the result of Singapore's efforts to diversify sources of expansion beyond electronics exports. The push to bolster services may sustain the economy and support investment that spurred the island's benchmark stock index to outperform counterparts in China, Taiwan, Japan and Australia this year.

'Singapore has unique growth characteristics of its own as a function of having some new areas of growth,' said Manraj Sekhon, the London-based head of international equities at Henderson Global Investors Ltd., whose firm oversees about $94 billion in assets, including shares in Singapore companies.

Stock Performance Henderson has 'meaningful positions' in Singapore-based companies such as Wilmar International Ltd., the world's largest palm-oil trader, and Keppel Corp., the biggest maker of shallow- water rigs, he told Bloomberg news. Its holdings of Singaporean stocks, also including CapitaLand Ltd. and casino operator Genting Singapore Plc, are 'close to the highest positions we've had,' he said.

Singapore's benchmark stock index has climbed 28 per cent in the past year, more than Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Taiwan's Taiex, while the Shanghai benchmark has fallen 22 per cent.

    S'pore handles record assets

    The Straits Times
    Jul 9, 2010

SINGAPORE asset managers handled a record high assets worth $1.2 trillion at the end of 2009, surpassing even the pre-crisis peak of 2007.

In 2008, they managed $864 billion of assets, said Mr Ong Chong Tee, Deputy Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore on Friday.

Speaking at the OCBC Global Treasury economic and business forum, he said the Asia Pacific region continued to be the key investment markets for Singapore-based asset managers, accounting for 61 per cent of the total assets under management (AUM) in 2009.

This represented an increase of 9 percentage points from the 2008 MAS survey, underscoring the growing interest in Asia markets.

Mr Ong said the rise in assets was consistent with the recovery of market sentiments from the latter half of last year.

'Asia's economic resilience through this recent crisis period stood in stark contrast to the more developed economies,' he noted. 'This was the first time that Asia has led a global recovery. In Q2 2009, most Asian economies exited the recession when US and Europe were still in contraction. In fact, the large economies in Asia such as China, India and Indonesia, continued to expand throughout the crisis. '

As at the first quarter of this year, the region's combined GDP had risen more than 11 per cent above its previous peak, while that of G3 economies remained 2 per cent below their pre-crisis level.

Going forward, Mr Ong said Asia is expected to continue to outperform the global economy. The IMF now expects Asia to grow by 7.5 per cent in 2010, with China potentially growing by some 10.5 per cent. By comparison, the world economy is expected to rise by 4.6 per cent.

Ironically, Asia's current resilience is partly the result of the Asian financial crisis more than ten years ago, which had paved the way for the strengthening of regional balance sheets that allowed Asia to weather the global financial crisis much better, said Mr Ong.

Whilst the above report is correct technically, it does not give a more useful perspective.
To shout to the public and the world of its forecast 2010 gdp growth as the mother of all gdp growths, even comparing with China for an even more distorted picture is taking things a bit out of context.
Now, if presented in the following more meaningful comparisons, don't you think the reader will now have a better picture of the true situation?
Singapore's gdp growth in 2008 was minus 2.5%, minus 6% in 2009 (minus 8.55% in US $), and now a projected 10.8% which it uses to put China's gdp growth in the shade.
In numbers that can be easily understood Singapore's minus 2.5% gdp for 2008 means its 2008 gdp was 97.5. A further minus 6% gdp in 2009 means the gigure 97.5 becomes 91.65. Even with a claimed 10.8% gdp growth for 2010 will only increase the figure 91.65 to 101.5
Now a figure of 101.5 for year 2010 versus 2007's 100.0 is peanuts.
Let us now take China's case. Its 2008 gdp growth was 9.6% to give a figure of 109.6. Its 2009 gdp growth was 9.1%, driving the 2008 figure of 109.6 to 119.6. With a modest 2010 gdp growth of 10.1%, and claimed by Singapore's Straits Times as lower than Singapore's, China's 2010 figure will increase from 119.6 to 131.65.
Now, as you can see China's number of 131.65 for 2010 makes Singapore's 2010 figure of 101.5 now tells a different story. China's gdp growth has leapfrogged Singapore by 30 % over 3 years.

Nothing wrong with this statement taken as it is written.it merely says using this year as a benchmark Singapore's annual growth per se will surpass that of China's, its just a figure or benchmark on the rate of economic expansion
    in the current year.
Just as in many places double digit growth this year on is merely catching up on a economy that has previously shrunk
in 2007 or thereabouts. China though is experiencing real growth AT THE MOMENT without experiencing any contraction recently.Similar patterns have been seen in Msia and Ina.It depends on where one wants to start the index from.

This is quite similar to the type of selective information and advice I used to get from my previous two stockbrokers. The first one was more interested in the volume of business he was trying to get from me, regardless of my interest. He even persuaded me to bu substantial stocks from a company that was eventually closed down by the Stock Exchange for fraud. The other was a family friend who believed in being able to get privileged information. I finally dumped both of them for giving me selective information without giving me the big picture.
Don't you think the above Straits Times article sounds more like a stockbroker's sales pitch?

    LOL,

When LKY was Pm he made it compulsory for all schoolchildren to study economics as a subject.

I dont know if its still the same, but anyone with some basics of economics would be able to see the context of the statement, the big picture or holistic view. Especially those staying in Singapore, they experienced the economic contraction and the figure is just benchmarked to a fresh start.i think people in Singapore are much smarter.

I think most people will be able to read things in context given some grounding in theory. When reading
from media though educated will know how to filter or discern info.

    1) I think he has too much time and no life.Perhaps as an immigrant from Msia to HK he has yet to adjust to his environment in HK.i think he also lacks manners and courtesy, something in-built in people from Singapore or people elsewhere with some basic Chinese education.
    2) He also suffers from some kind of deficiency, always referring to past achievements, and the inability to
engage the modern world, unable to think critically or out of the box . Needs re-education, no one is too old to learn.
    3) Most of all he hates Singapore, and will nit-pick at every opportunity, most of the time exposing his own deficiencies and ignorance as his info is all based on newspapers he reads in HK.
Most of all he wants people from Singapore to tell him to piss off as Loh has been too polite to rebut him, and he thinks it is because other Singaporeans do not support their government and country and Loh is a voice in the wilderness.

Bbn, pls let me remind you that Loh, until the thread Singapore Also Can, had always been a great supporter of my posts and opinions.
That somewhat used to embarrass me although it could also be a compliment.
Singapore Also Can or rather its contents as mere reproduction of newspaper articles picked selectively and the way it has been presented as a one- man show, brings out a need for a reality check as well as a healthy counterpoint. Have a look at Malaysia Boleh for its diverse opinions in which posters can express their opinions freely.

Simple common sense says a country renown for its dedicated government trying to propel its people
to be the best needs constructive criticism rather than negative statements.
On the other hand other places where corruption, inefficiency and injustice is paramount requires
    a lot of grilling.
The trouble that some people cannot tell the difference, cantonese say normal people eat rice and pass out ****,
but cranky people do the reverse, they eat **** and pass out rice.

S'pore-US security cooperation can contribute to Asia stability

    Channel NewsAsia
    12 July 2010 1342 hrs

MOUNTAIN HOME AIR BASE, IDAHO: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said security cooperation between Singapore and the US can help contribute towards the overall stability and prosperity of the Asia Pacific.

The Singapore leader made the comment after touring the Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho where the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has a detachment facility.

Prime Minister Lee visited the Peace Carvin V detachment facility on Sunday.

The first Singapore minister to visit the base was Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean. He was there last November.

Peace Carvin V is a partnership between Singapore and the US that spans 25 years. Singapore bought 24 new F-15SG jets under the tie-up.

It is at the base that pilots are trained to fly and operate the advanced fighter aircraft, which makes up part of the SAF's 3rd-Generation defence capabilities.

The F-15SG squadron is part of the air force's Air Combat Command which plans, controls and executes air warfare operations.

Accompanied by his wife Ms Ho Ching, Mr Lee got into the cockpit of a F-15SG to have a feel of what it is like to be in the pilot seat.

Speaking to the media later, Mr Lee said overseas detachment facilities are critical to SAF's operational readiness.

"It gives us space which we don't have, conditions which are different from our conditions at home," he said.

"So, we can learn to operate in different environments, and also the opportunity to train with friendly forces to learn from them, to exchange experiences with them and to become a more professional and capable, SAF, a stronger deterrent defence force."

US-Singapore defence ties are described as "close" by both sides.

Michael Donley, US Secretary of Airforce, said: "This has been a wonderful partnership, it has given us the opportunity to train together and to improve our inter-operability as we confront the security challenges facing both of our countries around the world."

A point which Mr Lee agreed with.

In response to reporters' queries on cross-strait tensions, Mr Lee replied that although there are issues, for example in North Korea, the region is peaceful.

He pointed to improving relations between China and Taiwan - which recently signed an economic cooperation framework agreement - as a good sign.

Mr Lee hoped that cooperation between Singapore and the US in the security area will contribute towards the overall security of the region and the relaxation of tensions and increased stability in the Asia Pacific.

Prime Minister Lee also met some of the 400 Singapore personnel and their families at the base.

He also toured a Chinese Tuition Centre set up for Singaporean students.

The centre is run by a teacher seconded by the Education Ministry.

Each child, aged 6 to 13 years, undergoes about three hours of Chinese lessons a week in the centre.

30-year-old Sylvia Siah, whose 6-year-old daughter Megan attends classes in the centre, said: "It's useful because it's stressful for us to teach Chinese on our own. We want her (Megan) to continue to keep up with the language and be able to keep up when she goes back to mainstream school."

The Siahs will return to Singapore next year where Megan will be enrolled into Primary One.

The bonding continued over lunch, with the visitors including Idaho Governor C.L "Butch" Otter joining the hosts in watching the World Cup finals on TV.

The Singapore military personnel will be at the US base for the next 20 years or so.

Moving forward, both sides hope for even more partnerships and training opportunities.

New Senior Service Centre for residents of Bishan studio apartment block

    Channel NewsAsia
    11 July 2010 1603 hrs

    By Saifulbahri Ismail

SINGAPORE : Elderly residents of a block of studio apartments in Bishan will soon benefit from a new Senior Service Centre at the void deck.

The Senior Service Centre, which is the first of its kind, is for residents of Golden Jasmine Studio Apartment, as well as elderly residents in the neighbourhood.

It will meet their needs for health maintenance and medical care support.

A Physiotherapy Clinic and a Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic are also available.

The Centre, which will be ready by November this year, hopes to facilitate independent living and encourage active ageing among the elderly residents.

It will be managed and operated by Econ Healthcare.

Group CEO Chua Song Khim said: "So what we are going to create for residents here is a service centre where you can have access to communal facilities, for example, a reading corner; they (will) have Internet access, they will also be able to listen to health talks and (there will also be) games and so forth for them."

As part of its service, the Centre will also monitor the Alert Alarm system of every household to ensure the health and safety of residents.

Residents of the studio apartment block received keys to their new flats from Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on Sunday.

(I hope this is the beginning of a new set of criteria for the HDB to provide in all public housing estates that have studio apartments catered to the elderly who have to live alone for whatever the reason. This also helps the children who may not have time or resources to look after their aged parents as primary care is available right at their doorsteps.)

SMRT will display 4,500 flags islandwide to celebrate National Day

    Channel NewsAsia
    12 July 2010 1532 hrs

    By Saifulbahri Ismail

SINGAPORE: SMRT will fly 4,500 flags across the island to celebrate Singapore's 45th birthday on National Day.

The public transport operator says it will display flags at some 100 locations at all its offices, train stations, bus interchanges, as well as on SMRT taxis and buses and staff private vehicles.

At 8.10 pm on August 9, SMRT will also rally Singaporeans to participate in One Voice 2010, to recite the national pledge and sing the national anthem at all its train stations, buses interchanges and four Xchanges shopping areas.

Singaporeans can also look forward to getting into the spirit of NDP 2010 when all SMRT train stations, bus interchanges and Xchanges start playing the NDP 2010 theme song, "Song for Singapore" by Corrinne May.

SMRT is supporting NDP 2010 with close to 500,000 dollars worth of sponsorship.

Why dont you start your own thread about where you are staying now as people would want to have 1st hand knowledge.Or start a thread about your family and their secrets so that people can discuss freely about your family and their private affairs for a reality check and transparency in your private affairs.
Being from a stoic Chinese upbringing we are brought up to be diplomatic and respectful of other people and
as normal homo sapiens we practise inhibitions and reservations in the words we say,our opinions etc.
Do you talk openly and freely about everything in front of minors in your family?
