    as far as WR is in concern, as long as LD has same 10 numbers of competitions (now 8 only) as anyone else's (10) in the WR points, he could be No.1... ;)

    and of course it is always our wish, as badminton fans, to enjoy more occassions of seeing LD's spectacular badminton... :D:D

    ugh?
    excuse my ignorance...but is there a difference between no.1 world ranking and no.1 seed? I keep hearing the commentators from videos saying that this guy is no.2 seed and this guy is no.7 seed... then when it comes to LCW they simply say the world no.1?

    world ranking(wr) 1 will be seeded 1
    but the 1st seed not 100% is wr 1
    if the wr 1 didnt participate
    then world no 2 will become seed 1(if he participate)
    a world ranking 10 player can be seeded 1 in a tournament if wr 1-9 player didnt participate at that tournament:)
    i hope my explain is clear:)

    i see

    I see, thank you, your answer was most helpful.
    Though I've heard before that it is possible that a player is not 'seeded'. Does that mean there's a limit on the number of seeded players? For instance, the 11th world ranked player cannot be seeded because he's ranked above 10, or because the top 10 world ranked players all participated and there is no such thing a 11th seed?

    I thought there's only a max of 8 seeds?

    At BWF SS tournaments, there's only a maximum of 8 seeds

    .
    This is correct. At BWF SS tournaments, there's only a maximum of 8 seeds. After the seeded players are placed into their seeded positions/slots of a draw, the other players are picked from random 'drawing from a hat' picks, to be placed into the other slots.

    suggestion of WR system improvement

    Suggestions to make the World Ranking system more meaningful:

    1. WR could base on numbers of MATCHES instead of competitions:
    - in the current system, elite players have to play more matches per competition, therefore in order to compete in minimum 10 competitions for WR, they have to play more matches (maybe 30-40 matches) than mediocre players (maybe 10-25 matches), and therefore usually skip competitions;
    - could agree with all national teams / players on minimum matches to be counted for WR, say the best 30 matches in the year, or whatever.

    2. Ranking points should be earned per match, not per competition:
    - in the current system, player would benefit from a weak draw to proceed further than the other one and therefore earn more points;
    - in the new system, 2 kinds of points would be awarded together based on the 2 qualities of the match:
    (a) stage of the match: different points for winning a final, a semi-final, a QF… and the like; call this Match Winning Points.
    (b) opponent in the match: additional bonus points to be earned depends on the WR of the opponents you defeated in each match, the higher the more WR bonus points earned; call this Player Winning Points.

    This is based on the logic that:
    a). the better quality the match a player wins, the more points he/she deserves;
    b). the effect of luck (say easy competition draw) in ranking points could be lowered or even minimized;
    c). low ranking and/or new players would be encouraged to upset higher ranking players.

    3. For making the WR system more significant, could consider the followings:
    - Use the WR to determine what kinds of competition a player could enter;
    - Use the WR more extensive to determine number of players a counter could qualify for the most important competitions like WC, OG, AE. The current system only considers the WR points of a nation’s players in the precedent year; BWF could consider to extend to the 3 or 4 precedent year with a weighted system, i.e. WR of every year counts.
    - Use the WR points to determine also the team seeding in SC, TC and UC.
    This could encourage countries like China not to ignore the WR when it is not the year preceding OG, WC, TC, UC or SC.

    Let's discuss.

    Hope that BWF can convince these best CHN players to participate more often

    .
    The Chinese team, with their best players, is the strongest in the world. If they participate in fewer tournaments, surely they would not be listed in higher positions in BWF Rankings.

    Hope that BWF can convince these best CHN players to participate more often.

    It's not just for the better ranking positions for these players, but for Badminton fans worldwide wishing to watch their skills and to appreciate what good Badminton is all about.

    I believe tennis has some reasonably strict rules about participation rate for the ATP and WTA tour circuit and as long as badminton participation goes through national federations when it comes to registering for tournaments you can't really draw a parallel with tennis.

    "What is the ranking structure and formula in 2010?
    A. In 2010, any player who finished in the 2009 year-end Top 30 will be required to compete in four Grand Slam tournaments and eight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. In addition, the Best 4 ATP World Tour 500 and Best 2 other events (ATP World Tour 250 and Challengers) will be counted towards a player's ranking. All direct acceptance players at the time of the entry deadline who do not play will receive a 0-pointer in their ranking.

    A player who is out of competition for 30 or more days, due to a verified injury, will not receive any penalties. For other players outside the Top 30, the ranking structure that applies, IF QUALIFIED, will be four Grand Slam tournaments and eight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. The Best 6 with up to 4 ATP World Tour 500 results will also be counted towards the ranking. If a player is not a Direct Acceptance and did not play a Grand Slam or Masters 1000 tournament, he can substitute with ATP World Tour 250 and/or Challengers. The eight players who qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals will count an additional 19th tournament on their ranking.

    The top eight players with the most countable points accumulated in Grand Slam, ATP World Tour, Davis Cup, Challenger and Futures tournaments during the year will qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London."

    "Q. What if a player is injured and can't play in a Grand Slam or ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament?
    A. If eligible to play in one of the Grand Slam or ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments, a player must count the points from these tournaments, even if it is 'a zero pointer' because he missed the event. Just as in Formula One and numerous other sports, if a competitor misses a race or an event, he loses his chance to earn points. Players with direct acceptance who do not play an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament will be suspended from a subsequent ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event which will be the next highest point earned ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event within the next 12 months. If an injured player is on site within the first three days of a tournament to conduct promotional activities over a two-day period, a suspension will not be enforced but a 0-pointer will be counted on a player's ranking."

    ..it's like one of BC's past mini-debates/discussions on BWF's WR and the validity of it..;)

    (i'll just make my comments here;))
    The way the current BWF WR system works, imo, it only encourages more participation from powerhouse countries like CHN to participate fully only during OG qualifying period (that 1 yr window). In other words, there's a loophole for an association (like CHN) to work around and give advantage to their players.
    But say, if BWF changes its rulings/requirements which make the WR standing from beginning of 2009 til summer of 2012, instead of May 2011-May 2012, count for the 2012 OG, i'm sure the CHN squad will be sending its top of the line armada of players to compete in as many tourneys as possible.
