Good decision by PB Djarum and once again, PBSI fails to realise that these tourneys could provide valuable ranking pts esp to Simon, Firda, and Fran/Pia.

Indeed, esp the WS squad, with their inconsistency, a bit hard for them to collect many points through the SS tourney, i think they should participate in some IC and GP tourneys..

Top shuttlers upbeat for Indonesia Open

Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sun, 06/05/2011 8:00 AM

After making it to the semifinals of the recent Sudirman Cup world mixed team badminton championships, Indonesia’s top shuttlers are optimistic of a strong showing at the upcoming US$600,000 Indonesia Open Super Series Premier championships in Jakarta.

For women’s doubles ace Greysia Polii, the top-flight Badminton World Federation tournament serves as a significant stage to increase her qualifying points for the London Olympics, while men’s singles veteran Taufik Hidayat wants to break Ardy B Wiranata’s record of six triumphs in the tournament.

“My main focus is the Olympics, and as the Indonesia Open is a Super Series Premier event, is crucial for my partner [Meiliana Jauhari] and I to collect qualifying points here,” Greysia said Saturday.

“We are hoping to raise our performance, which has been steady at the moment,” she added. Greysia has retained a world top 10 ranking since November last year.

The world number five women’s doubles player was speaking on the sidelines of the Celebrities Smash publicity event between top shuttlers and celebrities in Jakarta to promote the tournament, which will feature players from 28 countries and be broadcast live by Trans7.

Disappointed with the men’s singles performance at the Sudirman Cup, world number two Taufik Hidayat said he hoped the newer Indonesian players would display a better fighting spirit at the Indonesia Open and challenge for a spot in the world’s top five. The highest ranked Indonesian after Taufik is Simon Santoso, who had a poor showing at the Sudirman Cup.

Taufik is the third seed at the Indonesia Open, while perennial nemeses Malaysian Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan of China are ranked first and second respectively.

“There’s no doubt I am seeking both a seventh title here and also more points for London. After witnessing the poor performance of the men’s singles at the Sudirman Cup, I expect a stronger challenge from the newer Indonesian players,” Taufik said.

He last won the Indonesia Open in 2006, matching the legendary Ardy B Wiranata’s record six victories at the event in the 1990s. Taufik’s five other wins at the Indonesia Open were in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Indonesian men’s doubles pairing Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan pledged to raise the level of their game following a string of losses due to Hendra’s injuries late last year.

“We are hoping to peak here and at the World Championships [in London in August]. The pressure at an individual championship like the Indonesia Open is less intense than in mixed team event like the Sudirman Cup,” Kido said. He did not partner with regular teammate Hendra at the Sudirman Cup this year.

“Before the Indonesia Open, however, we hope we can also win the Singapore Open,” Hendra said, giving reassurances that he had fully recovered from his injuries. The pair will play in the Singapore Open Super Series on June 14-19.

Bravo Kido/Hendra! Wah Hendra has fully recovered, really? If yes, good news then. But last time i read the news HERE , In that news, Sigit said that the only way for Hendra to fully recover is go surgery in Japan, but the consequences, Hendra had to rest for eight months, and it will prevent them to play in Olympic Games, so Sigit just only maximize Kido to work harder to close the space that usually covered by Hendra.

Hopefully, Hendra is already fully recover, so they can play maximally in upcoming World Championship and of course Olympic Games!

    Thomas Cup hero passes away
Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 06/08/2011 7:00 AM

After battling liver cancer for sometime, an Indonesian badminton hero who took home the 1984 Thomas Cup, Hadibowo Sutanto, passed away at the age of 52 at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The former national shuttler, who was born on July 4, 1958 in Tegal, Central Java, had been undergoing cancer treatment in Jakarta and Singapore since January.

However, his condition became worse since Saturday last week.

1984 has been highly regarded as his golden year, as the men’s doubles specialist dueted with Christian Hadinata, to win the Thailand, Indonesia and Dutch Opens.

The Hadibowo and Christian duo reached its peak performance at the 1984 finals of the Thomas Cup badminton championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where Indonesia overcame China 3-2.

At the time, Indonesia was lagging 1-2 behind China, as Liem Swie King and Icuk Sugiarto were defeated by Luan Jin and Yang Yang, respectively. The duet tied 2-2 for Indonesia as they calmly took He Sangquan and Jiang Guoliang, 18-14, 15-10.

Hadibowo was remembered by former shuttler Lius Pongoh mostly for his “resillience on the court”.

“[On the court] he never gave up easily,” recalled Lius, who was also the former head of athletes development at the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).

Off court, Lius remembered Hadibowo as kind hearted, assertive and willing to help everyone.

“I never forgot when he helped me install the communication radio antenna at the national training camp in the 1980s. I asked him to help me because I was afraid to climb on to the roof of the athletes dormitory on Jl. Manila,” Lius, who felt he had close ties with Hadibowo, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Hadibowo also for a brief time paired with Swie King at the 1983 SEA Games in Singapore.

Prior to that, the shuttler who was born and raised by the prestigious badminton club Djarum, also partnered briefly with Bobby Ertanto, Hafid Yusuf, Heryanto Saputra and Eddy Hartono. His achievements rocketed high after he paired with Christian, the now-national doubles’s team head coach.

His remains are currently at Rumah Duka Dharmais until Friday before a final cremation ceremony will be held at Oasis Lestari in Tangerang.

Hadibowo is survived by his wife Desy Lieana Soeharti and three children William, Alvin and Nathania Tansy Hadibowo.

Linda and April lost.. well, i think the coach should considering to send them to some IC and GP tournament first, at least until they are more stable than now.

No pt sending these players to GPG or SS events.

It's true that they probably need to at least win one or two titles at IC level or GP level before they can contemplate any higher-level tourneys.

What I am sometimes annoyed with is that PBSI seldom realises the benefits of sending the under-performing senior-level players and 2nd-team players to IC or GP level tourneys and therefore, they seldome sent these players to those tourneys.

There's TONS of IC or GP level tourneys that can be exploited to boost up the rankings of players.
    June/July:
    Russian Open GP & IC
Indonesia IC - home event but I can guarantee PBSI will only send their junior team there.

    Aug:
    Vietnam Open GP

    Sep:
Indonesia Open GPG - home event, but if response is enthuastic (due to Olympics qualification), again, it might be hard for the Pelatnas players (even first team players) to win a title.

    Oct:
Bulgarian (or Swiss) IC & Dutch GP - I will prefer PBSI to send their 2nd team to these 2 back-to-back European events.

    Nov:
    Bahrain IC
    Malaysia IC

    Dec:
    India IC & GP

Predictable but not exactly that encouraging for these players to improve their rankings.

Pertamina pledges to maintain sponsorship after SEA Games

Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 06/10/2011 10:16 PM

The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) signed a Rp 2-billion (US$234,000) sponsorship agreement with state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina on Thursday.

The partnership, aimed at bolstering the team’s goal of capturing four gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in November, was called an entry point for larger sponsorship opportunities.

“Next year, the PBSI will also face prestigious competitions, including the Thomas and Uber Cups and the Olympic Games. We hope Pertamina will continue supporting us,” PBSI chairman Djoko Santoso said after signing the agreement at PBSI headquarters in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Thursday.

The national oil and gas company, which currently operates in 12 countries, including Australia, China, and Japan, wants expand its international reach and is hoping to benefit from sponsoring one of the world’s badminton powerhouses.

“We have a commitment to continue and to take part in restoring badminton as part of our national pride,” Pertamina spokesman Mochammad Harun said.

Should ask/get another Rp2billions to get their company name written on the front of INA jersey. CHN got FedEx and Citroen, maybe INA should get DHL and BMW or something :)

PBSI simply does not have any intention to send its players beyond Asia. Even for European tourneys, they only know the AE, Swiss, Denmark, and French (sometimes with German or Bitburger or Dutch). They WILL NOT send its players to the European ICs tourneys.
