    "Floating point"

    Well, floating point, was just a fast translation of the "concept", which is about how alexh describes it! I don't think it is a official term, Floating area might be better...
    Instead of thinking just in distance in relation to being placed in the middle of the court, this area takes into account time, both time for you to reach the corners, but also the time for the shuttle to travel from the opponents racket to wherever it is suppose to travel!

    Also, it is common that players do move faster forward than backward, therefore the base in general is closer to the back court. Therefore the exact mathematically measurement of the "middle" of the court, we/I don't really use that.

    Floating Base/Area

    .
    Thank you Mikael; for the explanation of the "Floating Base/Area". I can see clearer now where it is located; you have described it quite well. :):):)

    ..i don't think it's a term commonly used in the U.S.l rather it's widely known/used...i've heard it being mentioned in baddy videos before..
    As for the definition, i think that pretty much defines it. Putting the shuttle in particular spaces of the court (in doubles play, often in that space in between the server and his/her partner). It's kinda a tactical way to get the shot that you want by setting up your opponent to hit a shuttle where s/he is not comfortable in.

    How about Split?
    Carry?
    Wood shot?

    .
    Yes, we would like to know about the 3 terms used in the USA, namely;

    Split = Sometimes called "Scissors Jump"

    .
    Since you are based in the USA, I just thought you are talking about terms used in the USA. :):):)

    But it does not mean that you are required to tell us USA specific terms. Since you are from Indonesia, perhaps those terms used;
    * Split
    * Carry
    * Wood Shot
    are commonly in Indonesia.

    But, we need you to explain the terms for us. :):):)

    In Australia;
    Split = Sometimes called "Scissors Jump". Meaning jumping in the air; splitting the legs when hitting an Overhead shot.
    Carry = A scooping action on a shuttlecock during a stroke production. Some Australians call it a "Scoop".
    Wood Shot = When the shuttlecock is struck by the frame of the racket-head. "Frame Shot" is now gradually replacing this term.

    .
    You tell us what they mean (USA or INA or elsewhere). Otherwise, AUS Badminton terms would dominate this thread; which we do not wish this to happen. :(:(:(

    "Split" can also mean split drop.

    How would you define "overhead shot?"

    I have found this to be tricky because some people define overhead shot to mean any shot (clear, drop, smash, and variations of each of those three shots) that is above the racket height when the racket is extended upwards, while others define it to mean forehand shots in the backhand corner where you reach your racket over your head toward your non-dominant shoulder to execute the shot (clear, drop, smash, and variations of these shots).

    If you guys have some terminology that you use that clarifies this issue, it would make teaching other people so much easier.

    Overhead Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock above your head

    .
    Simply speaking;
    Overhead Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock above your head.

    It can be a;
    Overhead Forehand Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock above your head with a forehand grip.
    Overhead Backhand Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock above your head on the backhand side using a backhand grip.

    Sliced Smash

    .
    Adding in the "Sliced Smash".

    * Sliced Smash = A smash by hitting at the side of the shuttlecock (to cause the feathers to rotate); causing it to dip down quicker
    * Cut = Slice; A shot made when we hit the side of the cork of the shuttlecock.
    * Boleh = "Yes, we can" in Malaysian. It is yelled/cheered to players to encourage them to play better
    * Slice = A shot made when we hit the side of the cork of the shuttlecock. Slice Smash and Slice Dropshot are most common
    * Block = A shot hit by a racket-head swung with little or no movement at all. A Block Return of a Smash is most common
    * Push = A shot hit by a racket-head swung at constant velocity. A Doubles Low Service can be performed with a Push
    * XD Push Shot = Pushing the shuttlecock to the Side Tram Lines; directing it to fall between the front and the back players
    * Jia You = "Add Fuel" in Chinese (Mandarin). It is yelled/cheered to players to become stronger physically and mentally
    * Drive Return of Smash = A shot driven back quickly before our opponent is ready to intercept or to return it
    * Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it
    * Deception = To fool and/or to wrong foot our opponent. Make him/her think we are executing this shot when we are playing another shot
    * Base Position = (For Singles Games) is the middle position between the net and the back line, and the middle position between the side lines
    * Defensive Clear = An overhead or underarm Clear executed to our opponent's Back Tram Lines; allowing us more time to return to our base position
    * Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent.
    * Spinning Netplay = A shot played near the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to spin (rotating) over the net
    * Tumble = A shot played near the net to the our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net
    * Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court
    * Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.
    * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke
    * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent
    * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally.

    - Hmm, so, if i'm, say, based in Bostwana, then those terms are used in Bostwana??..:confused:
    - I don't know if those terms are commonly used in Indonesia (yes, i've been long gone from INA)..:p
    - I thought you are a coach and should be able to explain to us the meaning of those terms??..
    - Those "Australian" definition are fine and close enough..thanks..
    - The USA or INA based definition should be the same as the ones given above. And it's fine if AUS Badminton terms dominate this thread..

    We can only contribute the terms used from our countries. And we cannot say that the terms used from our countries are the 'correct' or the 'only' ones.

    Australia uses many terms used from England. I am sure that Botswana also uses many terms from England as well, since Botswana was also in the British Commonwealth of Nations.

    I was hoping that this thread can introduce to BCers foreign terms that some of us have not come across before, because we are located in different corners of the world.

    It was appreciated that keith.roche introduced this term;
    * Dribble / Netshot = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.

    Now, we shall add in "Kill".

    * Kill = Hitting the shuttlecock in a downward direction to opponent's court with maximum power hoping to finish a rally.
    * Overhead Backhand Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock high above our head on the backhand side using a backhand grip.
    * Overhead Forehand Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock high above our head with a forehand grip.
    * Overhead Stroke = A stroke striking the shuttlecock high above our head.
    * Wood Shot = When the shuttlecock is struck by the frame of the racket-head. "Frame Shot" is now gradually replacing this term.
    * Carry = A scooping action on a shuttlecock during a stroke production. Some Australians call it a "Scoop".
    * Sliced Smash = A smash by hitting at the side of the shuttlecock (to cause the feathers to rotate); causing it to dip down quicker.
    * Cut = Slice; A shot made when we hit the side of the cork of the shuttlecock.
    * Boleh = "Yes, we can" in Malaysian. It is yelled/cheered to players to encourage them to play better.
    * Slice = A shot made when we hit the side of the cork of the shuttlecock. Slice Smash and Slice Dropshot are most common.
    * Block = A shot hit by a racket-head swung with little or no movement at all. A Block Return of a Smash is most common.
    * Push = A shot hit by a racket-head swung at constant velocity. A Doubles Low Service can be performed with a Push.
    * XD Push Shot = Pushing the shuttlecock to the Side Tram Lines; directing it to fall between the front and the back players.
    * Jia You = "Add Fuel" in Chinese (Mandarin). It is yelled/cheered to players to become stronger physically and mentally.
    * Drive Return of Smash = A shot driven back quickly before our opponent is ready to intercept or to return it.
    * Drive Service = A Service that is hit hard and fast, hoping to pass past a receiver before he/she is ready to intercept it.
    * Deception = To fool and/or to wrong foot our opponent. Make him/her think we are executing this shot when we are playing another shot.
    * Base Position = (For Singles Games) is the middle position between the net and the back line, and the middle position between the side lines.
    * Defensive Clear = An overhead or underarm Clear executed to our opponent's Back Tram Lines; allowing us more time to return to our base position.
    * Punch Clear = An overhead Clear executed to just clear over the highest reach that can be met by our opponent.
    * Spinning Netplay = A shot played near the net to our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to spin (rotating) over the net.
    * Tumble = A shot played near the net to the our opponent's Fore Court, creating the shuttlecock to somersault once or more times over the net.
    * Dropshot = A shot played from our overhead position to the Fore Court of our opponent's court.
    * Dribble = Any shot played from ones' own forecourt to the opponents' forecourt with the shuttle passing in close proximity to the net tape.
    * Lift = A Clear which is played from an underarm stroke.
    * Clear = Any shot played high (higher than the racket head held high) to our opponent.
    * Service = The first stroke or shot played in a rally.
