    I was so surprised that Razif Sidek won the MS bronze medal in 1982 Commonwealth Games!!

    What? Depends on which event we are talking about. The earlier comment was in relation to Canada wining the Men's Singles in 1970.

    Just the golds, I would never equate the Australians as being a badminton powerhouse to be good enough to challenge the Malaysians, Singapore and English of that time.

    Mixed in 86 and ladies singles in 94.

    I wonder how they will do on home turf?

    we've had some really good players... but I don't think we have much hope now...

    Australia may not be a badminton powerhouse, but as a sporting nation, I rank them number one in the world when you take the population (20+ million) into account. Rugby, cricket, swimming, squash, tennis, you name it. Perhaps the youngsters just never took badminton seriously. There are just too many heroes in other sports to distract them.

    Unfortunately, I believe Australia will not feature prominently in the medals either in 2006, however its cross Tasman rival New Zealand may feature in several events like mixed, and possibly mens singles (John Moody impressed in the Ballarat International)....depends on the draws of course.

    haha.. in my school at least im teased more for being under 17 state champion for badminton then a couple of guys for irish dancing... the typical reply "badmintons a girls sport"..
