In previous message, I find that Cooler mentioned about Pre-amp and Power-amp, Taneepak talked about his comment on Hi Fi. Long time ago RJK is also a Hi Fi lovers and I am now a Hi Fi new babie. I just wonder how many Hi Fi lovers in this forum, and if possible, Hi Fi lovers please come up and share their equipments and comments.
i used to be one of the hi fi lovers forrest! kinda listening to the hi fi system rather than music! but that time had gone. in the past. i got an old cary sla 70 signature tube amp bi wiring a pair of roger LS 3/5a speaker with 4X audioquest mid night blue cables. love them very much those days! now i put all that stuff underneath my bed! i m currently using a yamaha av amp and a pair of british made arcam speakers! much more convenient! no need to got them warmed up. just turn on and play! the only tube amp i use nowadays is my fender de ville 410 guitar amp! up to this moment. i still don't like the sound of a solid state guitar amp! u know forrest, my father-in-law is a real hi fi lover. he builds tube amps himself and has a rather big collection on vacuum tubes since the late 50's. g e c, mullard, g e, rca, tung-sol.......so i will never worry about getting problems with my tube amps or getting some replacment tubes hehe... !

Yes, I get many funs from Hi Fi. Even my equipments are not expensive, but whenever I find the sound differences by changing the power cord, tubes, add weight on speakers, relocated the speakers and cables...... I will be totally satisfied. The most important, I can share the fun with my wife since she also loves music.
My rooms is only 100sq feet, so the beginner to intermidate grade av amp will be enough. Even SR600 has 6.1 already, I only set at 5.1 since 6.1 will be too many speakers in a small room. For the AV speaker, I am now using Celestion A1, I really no idea this speaker should match with which av amp. I buy the A1 also because of big bargin. In fact, my next target for the DVD player will be Philip DVP-9000, so I also need to consider with it.
Just depended on the situation of my new business, so upgrading will be the matters of half years. Female is not sensitive with machines, so my wife never knows I have changed the tubes, speaker cables, power cord..........even the CD players.
don't know much about room acoustic indeed! but i was told that we can never have a good result if your "hi fi room or living room is square like in shape! luckly, my living room is in rectangular shape. it seems to be fine for me. the only thing that i had dealed with was the "first reflex point" (not sure if it's the right term in english. just translate directly form chinese ) on both sides of the wall!
in fact, it is not good if the any of the 3 dimensions are multiples of each other. even so, square room is fixable by clever placement of furniture as well as sound absorption. other things to consider are: glass/windows are bad. diffuser/bookshelves are good.
you should also consider the Marantz DV-9500. it is an older model, and after the DV-9600 (latest model) came out, the 9500's price dropped from ~HK$15,000 to ~HK$7,000. however, of all the DVD players, it has one of the best analog/audio section. so well worth it if you plan to use it as a CD player too.
plilips used to make a lot of oem products. i wonder whether those philips and marantz players are sharing the same "soul"!
base on your equips and room description, i would suggest, in general and comparable price level, a yamaha amp would be preferrable over onkyo too.
