When he was young in elementary school, before he joined National Team, he played singles and men's doubles; he usually got the champions in both category. After he became a junior national team member as the youngest one(I don't remember his age at the time), he started to focus on MD and XD.

LOL. i wonder where did you guys get his pict. ) even korea lost in sudirman cup, but yongdae still has big supports and prouds from you all. you guys rock! yongdae isn't just a simply handsome or cool. but he's really great great player. he shows his professionality. and he deserves it guys. he deserves all the 'saranghaeo's and the 'hwaiting's you gave. ohmygod yongdaeeeeee... you are amazing! keep rockin'.
He used to win singles and doubles when he was young. Even in his last two years of high school, he won 3 domestic titles at the high school level. His last international singles result was the 2004 Indonesia Junior Open where he lost in the semi-finals to Gong Weijie, just a month before his 16th birthday. The last time he played singles internationally was, no doubt, the Asia Regional Preliminary Rounds for the Thomas Cup, where he was beaten by Hafiz in two straight. Shin Baek Cheol followed a similar pattern, although he kept playing singles internationally until much later, including last fall and last week.
i haven't gone back for all those 2000+ posts, what is the general opinion of he should concentrate on one event rather than both MD and XD? he doubled it up quite often, even in the 2008OG. Most of the tournaments you play everydays in the last 3-4 days, it must hurt even for a young professional. I dont know if he had many successes with both titles in one tournament, shouldn't he be better to pick and concentrated on one?
Traditionally, Korean heroes in badminton have played in both categories; legendary Park Joo Bong, Kim Dong Moon who made countless achievements. LYD is also following the line of his seniors as he has quite good abilities to do that. Usually, he has advanced to semi-finals and finals in both categories of BWF tourneys, sometimes winning two titles at a time. He said, it's really hardworking to play in both categories, but getting used to it learning how to save energy in XD. In general, two-category players used to play a role to cover the font area in MD so it could be manageable saving energy. And in other tourneys like BWF Super Series, if some player has to play in both MD and XD, when the organizer planning the order of final matches, they usually put the two categories in the first and the last so that the player can have enough rest. But in this Sudirman cup, YD could only rest for tens of minutes during the MS match.

As returning from Sudirman Cup.... by LYD (from StarYongDae Fan Cafe. 2009.5.20) Hello folks, Again I am writing after a long time. You must be eager to see my new writing... I'd like to say I always thank all my fans for your cheering me up. For this mixed team event, actually I didn't practice enough due to many other schedules so I was very concerned about that. But fortunately we could make good results. Even though it's good to make good performance in individual events, in team event as well in which all the members play together I found yet another joy that is doubled... Personally I had not participated in the mixed team event yet as I always had injuries (translator's note: in 2007 Sudirman cup, he got injury on his little finger as you might recall.). But I could make it in this event that was real good experience for me. Now I will take some rest for a couple of days and start to practice for the Open tourneys (BWF SS) and National games in June. Please cheer me up so that I can make it all through without injuries. By the way, as the weather is very good these days I feel going out to beach for relax.... I hope you guys can take some time to visit any close resting places. Don't take cold food/drink too much for the hot weather... Always I wish your every each day will be happy and joyful! ㅋㅋ

YD get a lot of chinese fans after sudirman cup. A chinese journalist wore a victor T which were printed YD'name on the teamfinal day. there is a poem for yongdae by a chinese fan. You are my happiness You are my sunshine You are the reason Why I couldn't fall asleep last night So naive a face So persistant a mind Like a beam of sunshine So soft so tender You brighten my 20 years of barren life Some people call you genius I see a boy's shyness Like my little brother, my little son Such close we were, so far away you are For my huanted anguish of missing For my unbearable violent emotion flood at night
