i believe all second places after group matches will go into the draw to determine which of the 4 top teams (winner of group) to play in QF. assuming CHN will win the group, MAS can throw a match here and there to be second thus into the draw. but whats the point?
if the danes repeat all their last winning forms - peter against lin dan and the mens doubles, denmark can beat china (that is, if they do meet)!
So if CHN beat KOR and MAS beat JPN, they won't meet in QF? But if KOR beat CHN and MAS beat JPN, there's chance for them to meet? Or if JPN beat MAS and CHN beat KOR, then there's chance for a CHN vs MAS QF? Or are they gonna just unscramble the top 8 and do a fresh draw? What's the rule?
Poll Results: Hours just before this 2010 Thomas Cup event commences . I thought we should record what our BCers have voted so far (just hours before this 2010 Thomas Cup event commences); China ............ 60% Indonesia ...... 15% Malaysia ........ 14% Denmark ........ 08% Korea ............ 03% Others .......... 00% .
simply, the winners of the 4 groups will be seeds 1 to 4 for the semi, therefore wouldnt meet in the QF. Also, as CHN and INA are rank 1 and 2 respectively they would meet until the final if they both won their groups.
so CHN could meet KOR again in QF? seems it is not like soccer World Cup or European Championship, teams met in group stage could be avoided in the 1st round of the knock-off stage?
i do think China does hold a big edge over others like the poll... the 5 teams have different areas of strenght so their chances are just 20%+ or 20%-... my predictions: CHN: 23% an excellent 1st MS, good 2nd and 3rd MS plus a good MD, so maybe 23%; MAS: 21% an excellent 1st MS and good 1st MD, fairly good 2nd MD, plus home court advantage, so say 21%; DEN: 20% a good 1st MS and good and average MDs, so 20%; INA: 19% averagely good MSs and MDs, so 19%; KOR: 17% without LYD, no one outstandingly good MS or MD excelp the unknown LYI.., so 17%.
WHAT ! You ownly class Taufik as a "average" player ? IMO, with the exception of china, I would say INA have the best selection of singles players, for thomas cup competitions. For MS, it's: 1. CHN 2. INA 3. DEN 4. MAS 5. KOR For MD it's, 1. DEN 2. CHN 3. MAS 4. INA 5. KOR (can't think of the second pair) By this logic, the result would be: 1. CHN (3) 2. DEN (4) 3. INA (6) 4. MAS (7) 5. KOR (10) But MAS have home support. So.... Anything can happen.
i think a lot of bc members would like to know how did you come up the above ranking, purely based on your own prediction or was there any kind of formula used?
Badminton: Powerful Chinese eye Thomas, Uber Cup glory AFP - Saturday, May 8.KUALA LUMPUR, May 8, 2010 (AFP) – Badminton powerhouse China, featuring Olympic champion Lin Dan and women's world number one Wang Yihan, are confident of keeping their stranglehold on the world team championships starting Sunday. The dominant Chinese have won the past three editions of the Thomas Cup, for men, and six consecutive Uber Cups, for women, and head coach Li Yongbo is confident of further success in Kuala Lumpur. "We came here prepared to retain both cups and that is just what we intend to do," said the former world and Olympic champion ahead of the start of eight days of competition in the Malaysian capital's Putra Stadium. China, boasting world and Olympic champion Lin Dan, and former world number ones Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in the doubles, are hotly tipped to make it four titles in a row in the men's competition, held every two years. But Indonesian ace Taufik Hidayat believes the 13-times champions have an even chance of regaining the trophy they last lifted in 2002 when they beat Malaysia in the final in Guangzhou, China. "I will give China the vote as 51-49 favourites to retain the title," said the top-ranked Indonesian singles player, currently fifth in the world. "But I expect it to be one of the most closely fought Thomas Cup finals from the knockout stages." US coach, China-born Cai Zimin, has written off his team's chances after being drawn with both the defending champions and the hosts in Group A. "Both China and Malaysia are strong teams," said Cai. "They have world-class players and there is no way we can beat them in the group stages. This effectively shuts out our hopes of making the quarter-finals." The powerful Chinese women include world top two Wang Yihan and Wang Xin but they are unlikely to have it all their own way in their bid for the biennial Uber Cup, with three-times champions Indonesia gunning for a repeat final clash. Indonesia's Uber Cup team manager Djendjen said his side were "a good bet for the final" although he admitted China would be strong favourites. "Our target is to reach the final. There should not be any obstacles in topping our group to advance to the quarter-finals," said Djendjen. The once-mighty Indonesia, who are in Group B with Denmark and Australia, lost 0-3 to China in front of their home fans in Jakarta in 2008, having last won in 1996 in Hong Kong. "We have a young team without any big names. But we have a set of players who are capable of regaining our past glory," added Djendjen. China's Li said his players have been told not to do any sightseeing after two Malaysia coaches were treated for swine flu and subsequently given a clean bill of health. "The players will been told to stay in their rooms. They are allowed to go only to the training venue and to the Putra Stadium."
thought you guys may be interested, I have created a database with major head-to-head results since 2007 between all the TC members from the 5 top teams. http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1433754#post1433754
this poll result mostly reflect on what team the bf'ers WISH to win, not which team WILL win. The real poll on which team will win should go see the TC/ UC PAW thread
Ah cooler, we all knew who the heavy favourite was way ahead of time. In essence this poll was unnecessary if only to make Jia You fans feel good about themselves. And yes, PAW picks are a much better barometer of the sentiments out there
on emotional quotient, having ~59% votes hardly make us feel good Our feel good standard is set much, much higher
Coach Li promises Uber Cup win for China AFP - Friday, May 14 KUALA LUMPUR, May 13, 2010 (AFP) – China's outspoken coach said Thursday the defending champions have no doubt they will once again claim Uber Cup glory against South Korea, having defeated them in five previous finals. "The final will be tough but the outcome will be the same -- we will win again," said Li Yongbo. "We have beaten the Koreans in our previous five meetings in the final. Come this Saturday, we will make it six. "There are no two ways about it. It will be another win for the Chinese." In the Thursday's semi-final of the women's world team badminton championships, China were too strong for the Indonesians, whom they whitewashed in the Uber Cup final in Jakarta in 2008. World number one Wang Yihan overwhelmed Indonesia's top shuttler Maria Febe Kusumastuti in 37 minutes. And it was another easy outing in the doubles when Ma Jin and Wang Xiaoli clinched a 21-17, 21-13 win over Greysia Polii and Melliana Jauhari. In the second singles, China's Wang Xin killed off the tie by defeating Adriyanti Firdasari 21-17, 21-15. "Frankly, I am not happy with the way we played in the first singles and first doubles," said Indonesia's coach Djendjen. "We were simply disappointing in both matches. All I can say is that Firdasari was the only player who gave her best on the court. "Maria Febe could not handle the pressure of high expectations we had on her. She is young and probably succumbed to the pressure. She also did not play to her true form," said Djendjen. "If we had the luck in the draw we would have been playing in the final. I can safely say that we could have beaten any other team other than China in the semi-finals."
jia yu fans better feel good at 100% now before meeting mas and when lcw beat lin dan, probably 50% is gone, then the md1, another 20% gone so should have 30% or 0% to celebrate whatever outcome of the meet!
I feel Malaysia team is stronger than Indonesia and Japan, although Japan has upset us in the group matches. If MAS cannot stop China (although the chance is slim), Indonesia and Japan have no way to win against China as well.
don't underestimate the japs, they have proved they are also bulldozers, nothing gonna stand their way!
