IBF treats the World Championship as a team event by granting quotas Fans view the World Championship as a team event by cheering only for their compatriots So, why not we do some staticstics by counting the survival rate in each round for different countries. I believe now China still have all its player in the 3rd round. How about other countries: Country......1stround......2ndround.....3rdround ................QF..........SF.......F......Winner China: 3+4+3+4+3(17)...3+4+3+4+3(17)(100%)...2or3+4+3+4+3(16or17)(94%or100%)... Korea: 2+2+2+3+3(12)...2+2+2+3+3(12)(100%)...1or2+1+2+2+2(8or9)(66%or75%) Indon: 3+2+3+0+3(11)...2+2+3+0+3(10)(90%)...1+0+1or2+0+2(4or5)(35%or45%) Malay: ... Denm: Taiwn: HK: Japan: UK: Could someone kindly help me to finish this table. Thanks a million
why asked why? why we need to play Sudirmap Cup, Thomas Cup and Uber Cup? You already knew China is a badminton superpower doesn't mean anything.
i tend to agree. 2cents is not trying to prove anything, he just want to learn, analyze and understand in more details from different angles.
Well, I doubt there will be many BCers really interested in this, at least not me. I suppose you can fill the statistics table yourself ...
- So, does that also mean the Olympics Games (or any tourneys which allow quotas) can be considered a "team event" also? - I think fans (of certain players and/or certain countries) would logically cheer for their fave nations or compatriots. - On the other hand, i don't think all of us fans do that. Thus, i wouldn't generalize all the fans as cheering only for their compatriots. - I still don't quite get the point of this thread/statistics???..
kwun's right. It's just some kind of datamining for people draw more detailed insights from messy matches data
sorry about that. I thought ina is not good term. Did not know that. It's too late to edit now, I will use a full name in the future. sorry again, it was not my intention if offended.
Olympics only allows 2 players or 3 from each country, it's of course more "team event" than wc have you watched NCAA college basketball? There are always the same, exact statistics for recording the results for ACC, big 10, ... similar statistics exists in Olympics medal counts, have you seen that before?
..i watched every so often but don't follow in exact detail; if NBA, pro-ball, yes.. What's the point again of bringing all this statistics up (NCAA college basketball, ACC PAC10, Big 10 etc.)??..
go to any NCAA page, you will see in the final 64, every rounds, there are the same staticstics for the survival percentage rate for each conference. Never mind, you must have overlooked that.
..so what if there are survival percentage rate for each conference??..what's the point of bringing it up??..what are you trying to point out?..
i think because we are badminton fanatics, we will love any type of stats and analysis if you can link it to badminton. if you give me statistics on how fast a shuttlecock deteriorates when used by different players. great if you give me statistics on how often LD takes a dump vs. LCW takes a dump. we will look at it too. if you give me statistics on how often, if ever, LYB takes off his cap, i am sure we will look at that as well.
..oh, so this is all about bringing up statistics???.... okay then, no interest in me, esp. on this particular set of WC viewed as team event statistics..
one purpose is for fun, the other is for the selection commette to better re-assign the quotas to different Conferences in the future
..so, basically you're suggesting to "spread the wealth around"??..have an equal no. of quotas for all the different continents/regions??..all even steven??..CHN will get 3 quotas for MS and S. Africa will get the same amt of quota for MS??..
Here is the result, some interesting findings: The more players sent by the team, the bigger survival rate for the team Taiwan is up and coming, very impressive; no body knows until this data mining and analysis Malaysia plunges and Hong Kong plummets how to survive rounds after rounds? Just send more players ! Sending more players, not only increase the base, but also increase the percentage. If send 17 players, then all 17 players will survive, if send 10 players only 5 players will survive; if send 8 or 7 players, only 1 or 2 or 0 survive.
amazing how much correlation there is between the two. however, i would attempt an explanation here. this being the WC, the team size is not something that one can choose, and that in itself is part of the discussion here. the team size is determined by ranking, and thus if a team has more higher ranked players, more players in the team will qualify for the WC. (with some constraints like quota, etc). so the fact that China has more players means that being a team as a whole, they are stronger. stronger players in the team pushes competition and pushes up the players skills as well, so as a result, the players end up stronger when compared to other teams. another connected factor is that stronger teams will have more seeded players, and seeded players are less likely to meet other strong (seeded) players in the early rounds, thus increasing their survival rate. it would be interesting to continue this curve, as well as start a new curve starting from round 3 onwards, i think the survival rate will look quite different.
