Are you sure you're not thinking of the 2008 Uber Cup? KOR threw their group matches there, but they took advantage of the format. The 2009 Sudirman Cup didn't even have Quarterfinals, it only had Semifinals. Korea won its group and faced INA (the second placed team in the other group) in the SF. You couldn't really take advantage of the format in the last Sudirman Cup, since there were only two groups and the SF would be winner A vs. runner-up B and winner B vs. runner-up A (in this case, KOR vs. INA and CHN vs. MAS).
Hmmm... maybe. I remember in one of these team competitions that Korea manipulated their position to get a more favourable draw in the KO rounds
I got it wrong too. It's not the 2008 Uber Cup, it's the 2008 Thomas Cup . Korea purposely lost both group matches to get a better place in the KO rounds. That's why the format was changed for the 2010 Thomas & Uber Cups, so that third-placed teams in the groups couldn't advance to the KO stage.
Yeah, Sudirman Cup is one of BWF event but its draw updating is too slow Fortunately, abcdefg has shared here, thx Poor England, it could be hard task for them to beat DEN & KOR. Group C -- TPE, THA, IND have quite similar chance to progress into KO stage.
Grup C is quite easy.. but Grup D is the hardest OMG..Korea and Denmark...ckck My prediction: GRUP A : China and Japan go through the QF GRUP B : Indonesia and Malaysia GRUP C : Taipei and Thailand GRUP D : Denmark and Korea ckckck...
In group C, I'm calling for an upset. I still don't believe in TPE's elevated seeding. They will probably lose both their MS and WS matches. THA in for sure. IND can pull it off. Also in Group A, I think GER will run JPN quite close. Group B, definitely INA and MAS. Poor RUS Group D definitely KOR and DEN. Poor ENG
INA should be able to be RUS (although we might lose some pts from WS or WD). As for INA vs MAS, INA needs to take WS, WD, and XD to be safe.
WS will be a battle of futility. Neither are any good . I actually think the key match will be in WD. With MAS getting Wong/Chin back, it levels the playing field a bit.
Firstly Group C looks by far the easiest group. Group D is the hardest, IMO : Group A: China (obviously) Germany Group B: Indonesia, Malaysia Group C: The most evenly matched (on paper) group. TPE have Cheng/Chien, and Fang/Lee, but no real quality MS. There WS is not bad, and XD isn't spectacular. Thailand, have Boonsak, and solid WS players, also with Sudket/Saralee in XD. There qualification from the group isn't really in doubt. India, have decent MS players, Saina for WS, but there doubles is average. So Thailand in 1st which leaves 2nd between TPE and IND. TPE I think will edge this 3-2 and it will come down to XD I think. Group D: Korea and Denmark (in that order) Park SH will beat Gade, and LYD/JJS will beat Boe/Mogensen.
A lot of people are writing Japan off. They'll show you. I sure don't want 2 European teams in the QF. Denmark is enough.
nah... after watching japan play in the Australian GPG, germany won't win... so china and japan through from grp A. apart from MS, germany don't have much to match japan really... the other 3 groups are pretty much set as well..
I've seen both GER and JPN. Juliane Schenk is on par with Eriko Hirose and Zwiebler should win in MS. JPN wins MD and WD so it boils down to XD, where GER is also competitive.
hmm, Japan vs Germany is an interesting one, I am still not sure, an the more I think about it... MS: Tago vs Zwiebler, a very close battle, key to the result of this tie. 0-1 Germany WS: Hirose vs Schenk, again, it can be close, but I think Schenk would edge it. 0-2 Germany MD: Hashimoto/Hirata vs Fuchs/Roth, not sure, probably JPN would edge this, 1-2 WD: (we know this will go to Japan) 2-2 XD: Ikeda/Shiota vs Fuchs/Overzier, so it comes down to XD.... I still don't know who will win this tie. I am tempted to say JPN, but I have a feeling that Germany can win it. Edit: Just did a search and found that at the German open 2011 Fuchs/Roth beat Hashimoto/Hirata 22-20 in the 3rd so that's another tie that can't really be called Fuchs/Michels, are now #10 in the world. So a lot in this tie will depend on Tago vs Zwiebler...
Is Fuchs/Roth higher ranked than Kindervater/Schoettler then atm? edit: I see K/S are WR#11 right now. They could of course still scratch pair Fuchs with Kindervater ...
F/R are #34 I think, but they are in better form I think. Plus they have beaten JPN MD before, unlike K/S (so physcological advantage?) K/S have most of their points for the French SS where they got to the final (CHN didn't turn up due to CBSL) but they did bear Kido/Setiawan.... Fuchs and Kindervater could be an option. The more I think about it, F/B could win XD, they have beaten quality opponents in the past, so I will stick with a Germany victory... ----------------------------- Btw, no Netherlands ? Cool we didn't bother to enter either someone decided of wasn't worth it...
K/S did beat a JPN pair at the Dutch GP but don't seem to match up well with Hashimoto/Hirata and you can check on TS they have better results, even most recently. Anyhoo Netherlands is in Group 2 Scotland is AWOL indeed
