    USA Badminton Team Finishes Pool Play at 2011 Sudirman Cup

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The USA Badminton Team wrapped up pool play in Level 2 Group 2B today at the 2011 Sudirman Cup in Qingdao, China. Team USA finished pool play with one victory and two losses, putting them in third place behind Singapore and Canada respectively. The USA outpaced The Netherlands who finished pool play in fourth place.

    In action in the final round of pool play today, Team USA fell to Singapore, four matches to one. The men’s doubles team of Howard Bach (San Francisco, Calif./Orange, Calif.) and Tony Gunawan (Los Angeles, Calif.) were the lone victors for the United States defeating Yi Liu and Zhao Jiang Terry Yeo two games to none (21-10 and 21-13). Gunawan paired with Yun “Grace” Peng (Los Angeles, Calif.) in mixed doubles, but fell to Chayut Triyachart and Lei Yao two games to one (21-23, 21-17 and 17-21). Rena Wang (Arcadia, Calif.) and Eva Lee (San Francisco, Calif.) teamed up in women’s doubles, but lost to Yao and Shinta Mulia Sari two games to none (12-21 and 12-21). In singles action, Kuei Ya “Joanne” Chen (Irvine, Calif.) represented the U.S. but lost two games to none to Juan Gu of Singapore (10-21 and 10-21). In the men’s singles match Sattawat Pongnairat (Long Beach, Calif.) fell two games to none (13-21 and 14-21) to Yong Zhao Ashton Chen.

    The United States team faced Canada on Wednesday, May 25th. In what always seems to be a close matchup, Team USA fell this time to our neighbors to the north three games to two. Team USA was victorious in men’s doubles and mixed doubles, but fell in women’s doubles and both men’s and women’s singles. In men’s doubles, Bach and Gunawan easily handled Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng two games to none (21-6 and 21-10). Gunawan paired with Peng to win mixed doubles by defeating Liu and Joycelyn Ko two games to none (21-16 and 21-15). In women’s doubles Lee and Peng fell two games to one (21-16, 15-21 and 9-21) to Michelle Li and Alex Bruce. Wang dropped the women’s singles match to Phyllis Chan two games to none (14-21 and 23-21). In men’s singles Howard Shu (Anaheim, Calif.) fell to Stephan Wojcikiewicz two games to none (19-21 and 16-21).

    Team USA opened the Sudirman Cup competition on Tuesday, May 24th with strong performances, winning four out of five matches against The Netherlands. Team USA defeated The Netherlands team in men’s doubles, mixed doubles, women’s doubles and women’s singles. The Netherlands were victorious only in men’s singles. The U.S. men’s doubles team of Bach and Gunawan defeated Jorrit De Ruiter and Dave Khodabux of The Netherlands two games to none (21-8 and 21-6). Bach teamed with Lee to defeat Jacco Arends and Ilse Vaessen two games to one (21-17, 20-22 and 21-17) in mixed doubles. Lee joined with Peng to win the women’s doubles match two games to one (18-21, 21-16 and 21-17) over Samantha Barning and Iris Tabeling. Wang won in women’s singles with a two games to none victory (21-10 and 21-13) over Patty Stolzenbach. The Netherlands’ lone win came in men’s singles as Rune Massing defeated Pongnairat of the U.S. two games to one (20-22, 21-12 and 21-16).

    With pool play now concluded, Team USA will now face the Ukraine on Friday, May 27th. The 2011 Sudirman Cup concludes with the finals on Sunday, May 29th.

    The Sudirman Cup is considered the World Team Badminton Championships. The Sudirman Cup is one of the most prestigious titles in the sport and is contested every two years. The event was first held in the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1989 (May 24-29) with 28 nations taking part. It now attracts more than 50 national teams. The Cup is named after **** Sudirman, a former Indonesian Badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia.

    Btw, team USA would be useless without Bach and Gunawan, what will they do without them ?

    Go easy on our Americian friends here , they are not a nation of badminton..........maybe you can go out there and help those out

    you can similarly call team china Team Beijing as that's where they are all training. ;)

    it is true that California is the hotbed right now for badminton, there are a couple of other locations with good players but the majority is still here. i see nothing wrong with that.

    not at the moment. even at the recent national championships, the best players are still from CA. there are some from Boston areas as well as from the midwest, but they didn't advance enough to the later stages. the training and sparring opportunities are much better here in both Northern and Southern California.

    Badminton is popular in California because of the bigger Asian communities there

    .
    An American friend once told me that Badminton is popular in California because of the bigger Asian communities there.

    Hope that the popularity of Badminton in the USA can be spread to other non-Asian communities.

    i'd say 5% of the badminton population here is non-Asian. that hasn't really changed much in the past decade.
