I think you need to be a little more aggressive - you got a good attack, but rarely push yourself to get behind the shuttle and use it. Your opponent is not very fast around the court and relies heavily on his anticipation to defend, so you could've won this (despite the very unsecure lifting) if you had tried to keep the shuttle going down more and varied the placement and pace of your smashes. He is also not so quick at turning and changing directions (as pretty much all tall people -.-) so a few jumped attacking clears would've been quite effective as well [I enjoy quite a bit of success with those as I'm very tall and thus a bit imposing for people who don't know I smash like a girl]. You should also work on your footwork when going for a high backhand shot, it's really not very effective and you lose time and reach whenever you go for that shot. I guess that's because you haven't played singles in training....however, you should really take the forehand more often, as your backhand, while decent, is not very strong and lacks variation (it's straight all the time). Anyhow, good match. Hope to see a bit more from you again, you seem to improve every time you post sth.
I really feel I need to say this, cause it's annoying me! Please take your time between points!!! It frustrates me whenever I play an opponent who takes no time between points(frustrates them too, cause they have to wait till I'm ready). It isn't a race remember! After a point, take a few seconds to regroup, think about how you are going to play the next rally, and what didn't work in the last rally, I reckon you need to take about 8-10 seconds between the last point ending, and starting your serve. Try it, slow down between the points.
one more advice, dont aim directly at the line, aim about 5-6 inches within the line . Unless you are playing against top players , the chances you going to lose the point when hitting directly at the line (hitting it out) is much greater than you actually catch the line and gain that point

This was taken a while ago. I am in the near court, in the blue shorts. Turn your speakers on. Yes I am a jerk.

Here's a vid, game #2 still uploading game #1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WalQN7m3sLY&feature=youtu.be I am the lazy bum in the red with black spandex with shorts over. Why? because practice was at 7 am where its f-ing cold. Me and my partner were helping the other two practice for a tournament in which and they played plastic, so fml critiques are welcomed, and yes, I knowww, I have to work on my footwork Will upload game #1 when its done
Game 3 of the recorded singles match: And a doubles match from the next day. We're all tired after playing 5 competitive singles the day before and another 3 doubles matches on that day, plus I was very relaxed because there was no question who'd win Make sure to watch 0:47 in HD and fullscreen and prepare to be amazed (Although 3:11 in the first singles game is very close ) I have a tournament coming up soon, I'll try to take some video there. It'll definitely be another level of competition than these rather casual doubles matches. I just hope I can set up the camera there, it was PACKED last year.
Thanks! I've trained quite a bit these last few months so it's nice to see (and hear) it's paying off Well as you said, your footwork is probably the weakest link in your game. Many of your errors come from not being in a good position and reaching towards the shuttle rather than moving your feet. Some drills for the split step would be good, and fast-paced doubles of course (it's a miracle how fast your feet can move if you're constantly under pressure^^^). Your forehand grip looks a bit weird to me as well, as if it's turned slightly (too close to a backhand grip imop). Can't say for sure in a video though. Pretty nice doubles match, although the plastic shuttles are a no-go
Off topic: For those who are in & around the London area or in UK/England or greater Europe, we'll be having a BC get-together event at this yr's OG...Also, we'll be giving away free BC t-shirts in conjunction with the get-together event.. Please see threads below: http://www.badmintoncentral.com/for...London-Olympics-BadmintonCentral-Get-together.. http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php/113191-FREE-Badminton-Central-T-shirts!!..
Hi j4ckie, I wont mention the large number of net shots put in the net from the first vid I think you could gain a significant amount of coverage by getting lower in your ready-stance - it should make pushing off a lot easier with a lower centre of gravity. In second vid you have a couple of jump drop shots - when you take the speed out of your arm, you also stop rotating. If you continued with the body rotation/completed the scissor then it would most likely aid recovery.
Yupp! I've been doing footwork drills a lot lately, I find that, I do split step, but only when its a match I am really into LOL I think a lot of times I drift off into LaLaLand and then I am like holy crap, I gotta get that shot. Hmm, My forehand grip is weird, I have learned the wrong way to smash, making me able to do stupid slice smashes, and just so happens to stun opponents because they're like wtf is that shot But recently, I've watched Coach Lee's vids and I've been trying to do everything he says. After today's rallying and testing it out, I find it really successful Agree! F plastic (at school I normally play feathers) but its for my opponents sake as they have a tournament to train for
Coach Lee's videos have to be taken with a grain of salt, some of his teachings are very outdated. The video on the smash that I've seen is completely wrong - better videos are the one by thejym (badminton pronation technique) and any slow-mo of Lin Dan, Fu Haifeng and the likes. The grip is not exactly the same with all pros, so you got some leeway there, but you don't grip it panhandle style like Coach Lee shows. The pronation is the most important part of the smash, even if it feels weird at first and the timing is off, learning to smash with pronation will improve it in the long run. By far. Yeah, my net play was completely gone that day. I took many many shots too low, but even then I usually at least get it over. Somehow I had no touch at the front One of the things I'll tackle in training the next few weeks, together with - surprise, surprise - footwork I blame part of it on my go-to BS09 breaking roughly a week before, though. The one I play with in the vid is 2-2,5g heavier and just a bit clumsy. Gonna get a replacement from Victor and an additional BS12 for backup though (as there's no way THAT's gonna be too heavy). Thanks for the comment! I'll re-watch the vid and look out for the scissor, I usually don't do one in the forehand corner although perhaps I should when I have the time to get behind the shuttle. I'll discuss that with my coaches when I have a chance. If the training continues the way it is right now, my singles will improve rapidly in the coming months (currently we play 3-4 each with 3 or 4 people of similar strength every session as we have much room - which is rare, and one of the reasons we have more doubles than singles specialists).
Oh seriously? I watched thejym's vid long time ago. I don't agree with the semi pan handle that Coach Lee teaches but I agree that the racket face should be open when hitting a smash so that one can get that a clean hit. For me I believe its the way I set up that causes a slice :s I definitely pronate. but probably not enough to get max power. I'll probably take a vid of myself doing some smashes and show you guys so I can get some correction. I'll do that when I have time.
Just having the racket face forward will make for an easier, but less powerful and less deceptive shot. The key to getting a powerful smash is using pronation AND timing it right (so that you actually hit the shuttle when the racket faces it perfectly). More advanced stuff are sliced smashed and drops where you hit the shuttle with the racket facing it at an angle on purpose, resulting in a deceptive shot which can drop more steeply due to the increased spin.
Ok! Thanks for the tips but why is having the racket face forward contributing to lesser power? Just curious because I thought it would give you more power if anything. As of right now, I keep the racket face forward to avoid doing slice smashes.
