I believe Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng will play at most in 3 tourneys this year: China Masters SS (they are already in the list, unless there's a late withdrawal), China SSP & HKG SS.

They have been a great MD pair, a worthy champion and it's about time they retire.

It would be amazing if LYB decided to put them together as an experiment

Count me in! But unfortunately, it appears to me that badminton has reached the point of beyond salvation! Badminton has been doomed into oblivion with all this "national pride" yada-yada-yada for good!

This really sucks, because as long as some countries treat EVERY SINGLE badminton tournament out there as team event, we will keep witnessing every scheme possible to ensure their national flag/banner to fly high during prize ceremonies! :(

Especially not when Asian nations see badminton as one of the sports where they have (almost) absolute superiority over... ahem,sorry... former colonialists: the white westerners ;)

Yeah, I know, I'm treading dangerous line here.

I think for sport to not attach to national pride is not exactly my wish. If we look at any sport, there is always certain degree of patriotism involved, at least at certain tournaments or events like the Olympics. And national pride does sometimes bring out the best performance in an athlete, even in sports like golf, team spirit can be a driving force, and that adds to the entertainment value. The principles of sportsmanship and mutual respect should be the overriding guidance for all to adhere to.

    And then, a question appears:

Are patriotism and sportsmanships able to go hand in hand?? ;)

A very good point deserving of emphasis, well said, including your example that nationalistic pride does sometimes bring out the best performance in an athlete.

I'm an internationalist but I do understand that nationalism is not all bad, it's a double-edged sword as someone (tsae75 iirc) once correctly pointed out. It's ultranationalism which expresses extremist support for one's nationalist ideals that I fear ( as in Nazi Germany and Fascist Japan in WW2).Even worse is imperialism, much more to be feared than nationalism.

However, the more realistic view of the geopolitical world we live in is that it is a world of anarchy based on nation-states and, unless and until , there is a united world under a world government, a distant ideal, nationalism in various forms is here to stay. Meantime, the best we can hope for is peaceful co-existence, mutual collaboration and non-violent conflict resolution, and positive peace (a concept introduced by Johan Galtung).

I sense that some people are actually more concerned about possible Chinese dominance in badminton one day than their nationalism which practically every other country also exhibits. Even in tennis, nationalism isn't entirely absent, just diminished, downplayed and largely replaced by big money and humongous sponsorships towards commercialism in sports which has its negatives too. There is still the team tennis events, such as The Olympics (individual as well), The Davis Cup, The Fed Cup, The Hopman Cup, The World Team Cup, where nationalistic pride is unavoidable and celebrated. Suppose one day the tennis top 4, namely, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray are ousted by 4 dominating Asians ?

(The difference between nationalism and patriotism is often confused and blurred; never mind, not that important for our conversation here. If you're interested, this article is a good discussion with one of the responses offering an alternative view http://www.zengardner.com/patriotism-vs-nationalism-the-deliberately-blurred-line/. Sorry for digressing).

Article 6: The Olympic Games are competitions between athletes in individual or team events and not between countries.
