Yes, after watching the SS finals WD final, it's quite obvious that ZYL is not the best she has been. Perhaps she's nursing an injury. Morten Frost mentions that she's quite often late in retrieving shots and would clear too often giving the initiative away. And TQ is asked to step up to cover her all over. Won't be easy to reach the finals of every major tournament playing twice as many games as your opponents.

perhaps because they are not so good in singles that's why the convert to doubles ?

I think Ra Kyung Min and Ge Fei was the good examples.
they are world and / or OG champion in doubles, and won more than 30 titles in doubles.

    but in WS ?

Ra Kyung Min, cmiiw, only can win 1 title in WS (between Singapore or Malaysia open in 1990's), and highest ranked 4 or 5 in WS

Ge Fei, I didn't know for details, but I think is the same, or even worst than Ra

from my point of view, for individually, single's player technically better than double's player

if Hendra Setiawan or Lee Yong Dae play MS, I really doubt if they can win more than 5 titles or ranked #3 in MS

    correction, it should be :
top single's player technically better than top double's player

this is also one of the good example

Rudy Hartono and Christian Hadinata were about the same age, but Rudy was forced to play in MS and MD, while CH only in MD

therefore, Rudy played 4 matches, and Christian only 2 matches in 1973 Thomas Cup final

I think the basic technique is more solid if you start in singles.

Why certain players convert to doubles I don't know. It's a question to ask national coaches. Can injuries play a part? But certainly, if you have limited success in singles, why not try doubles anyway! It is always an option.

I remember Li Yong Bo was originally a singles player.

    Park Joo Bong played singles.

Other notable names are Cai Yun, Tony Gunawan, Martin Lungaard Hansen, Joachim Fischer Nielsen.

Sun Jun can also win the mixed doubles of All China games (and get to the semifinal of the men's doubles).

Zhang Jie Wen looks a lot like a singles player converted to doubles.

but as far as I know, they are not so success in MS and WS

only 2 names that are great in single's also great in double's :

    Li Lingwei and Han Aiping

they are world #1 and #2 in WS
they are world #1 in WD
and both of them also world champion in WS and WD

Yes. I think less success is a driver for doubles. The game is so advanced now and training is stressful for the body - I doubt we will ever see a singles + doubles champion like Han Ai Ping/Li Ling Wei again.

The level of badminton is so high, players have to fully concentrate on either singles or doubles.

Congratulations on ZYL's All England win in XD! ZYL was particular sharp in the final. It was too bad that their opponent did not perform up their potential.

The commentators mentioned that ZZ had not been this sharp since the London Olympics. But the following match immediately came to mind. Considering the opponents played tougher, I think ZZ was even better then.

Cheng Shu, the original member of the Zhao YunLei Express, is now a full time law student at Beijing JiaoTong University.

A nice write-up on Cheng Shu was in the January edition of Badminton Magazine: https://translate.google.com/transl....cn/o/2015-03-24/10147553284.shtml&edit-text=

Along with a slide show at: http://slide.sports.sina.com.cn/o/slide_2_65820_79583.html#p=1

Zhao YunLei and Cheng Shu burst onto the scene after the '08 Olympics with three consecutive titles starting with Japan Open. They quickly became one of the top pairs in the world. Unfortunately, at the 2010 Asian Games, Cheng Shu suffered an injury during the team competition. Tian Qing was then partnered with Zhao YunLei for the team competition and further for the WD event. The rest was history.

In September 2013, Cheng Shu was registered for China Masters and Japan Open to resume her partnership with Zhao YunLei. However, bad luck strikes again. Before China Masters, Cheng Shu suffered another injury in the WD final at the Chinese National Games, ironically, against Zhao YunLei/Wang XiaoLi. Cheng Shu was carried off court on the back of Wang XiaoLi. And her reuniting with Zhao YunLei ended before it started. The university admission offer came at that time must have seemed an omen to Cheng Shu. After months of rehab, Cheng Shu was fit again but decided to retire from the national team.

For everyone on the Zhao YunLei Express, we wish Cheng Shu all the best in the new phase of her life!

I think so. As indicated by the move of pairing up ZYL with CS again in 2013, TQ was on borrowed time. But with the unstable and oft-injured youngsters, ZYL/TQ provided an insurance policy.

However, from this point on, everything will be Olymic-centric. With ZYL/TQ clearly not in the picture for Rio, TQ's travel pass on the ZYL Express is about to expire.

Nevertheless, being one of the few grand slam pairs (Olympics, World Championships and Asian Games), ZYL/TQ's legacy will be long celebrated. Tian Qing is a good player, but her luck is even better:)

She and Zhang Nan have to both do double duties in WD/XD and MD/XD respectively. It would be an amazing feat, but not sure how they can continue to do that in every single tournament from now till Rio without incurring injuries...

If she gets another Olympic title, then she is China's greatest female doubles player.
