Last year, Simon Santoso won the Singapore Open MS title.
But being the reigning champion carries no perks.
This year, he has to qualify afresh for the main draw.

However, he has good reason for optimism.
Last year, he started as a qualifier and ended as the winner.

Two-time winner Boonsak Ponsana too is in the Qualifying Rounds.
Such is the nature of player ranking!

    current ranking:
    Jan O J ......72993
    LIN Dan .....70500

both have no points deduction this week, so after Malaysia open,

JOJ got 7700 to replace his 4800, net gain = 2900, new ranking points: 75893
LD got at least 9350 (or 11000), his new ranking points: 79850 (or 81500).

LD doesn't need the tile to replace JOJ

LD already has 10 tournaments in his ranking calculation. So he needs to replace the low mark of 4,320 (round of 16 at Denmark Open). Therefore, LD will have either 75,530 (less than JOJ's 75,893), or 77,180 (good for WR#2).

you are right. Strange when I read it, I saw it was only 9 tournaments LD have played. Very strange.

It's Chen Long who got only 9 tournaments. He will get the full points from Malaysia Open and pull away from JOJ and LD.

    I was wrong.
Starting this year, the Badminton Asia Championships have been upgraded to BWF Super Series status.

For any tournaments, including WC but excluding OG, the defending champion should automatically qualify for the main draw, after satisfying certain minimum performance standard such as having played at least two tournaments in the last three months and ranked in top 100.

There is no way that any of the men mentioned in this thread can get to the women's singles no. 1 spot (as titled) unless I have missed something really obvious. :D:D

WS Ranking is a politically incorrect subject now. We are just talking about ranking in the broadest sense. Hope that not so many people will be offended :)

Is there a site that has links to pre-2009 world rankings? Since BWF's official site only provides links from 2009.
