Badminton intensity heats up in Hong Kong

Last chance for all shuttlers to grab Dubai ticket as some elite players have secured their spot in season ending finale. Top-notch badminton players will present entertaining contest at Hong Kong Coliseum for six days ahead.

All badminton fans may be treated for the much-anticipated rematch of recent concluded China Open final earlier, Chen Long-Lee Chong Wei clash as they’re scripted to face-off in last eight. Another high profile name that occupies top-half of draw is Lin Dan who’s slated to take on Chou Tien Chen at quarterfinal. Two dangerous Danish stars Axelsen-Jorgesen are drawn at bottom half alongside with Momota and two home darkhorses, Hu Yun-Wei Nan as well. Defending champion Son Wan Ho has pretty tough journey to extend his title here, started from last sixteen.
R/32 highlights : Tommy Sugiarto (INA) v Lee Chong Wei (MAS), Chou Tien Chen (TPE) v Vincent Wong Wing Ki (HKG), Xue Song (CHN) v Kento Momota (JPN), Tian Houwei (CHN) v Srikanth Kidambi (IND), Wang Zhengming (CHN) v Jan O Jorgensen (DEN)

Top seed Carolina Marin will make amends to do better here than quarterfinal defeat last week but she has tough opening test here, P.V. Sindhu who disposed the world champion in Denmark Premier semifinal last month. China best hopeful, Li Xuerui also will take on pretty tricky first round opponent, last year beaten finalist Nozomi Okuhara. Tai Tzu Ying starts campaign to defend her title here, meets Korean number two Bae Yeon Ju while recent world championships silver medalist Saina Nehwal and Wang Shixian pulled out of this tournament, the latter suffered injury at China Open semifinal.

R/32 highlights : Carolina Marin (ESP) v P.V. Sindhu (IND), Busanan Ongbumrungpan (THA) v Akane Yamaguchi (JPN), Nozomi Okuhara (JPN) v Li Xuerui (CHN), Bae Yeon Ju (KOR) v Tai Tzu Ying (TPE)

Last year winner Ahsan/Setiawan who stuck at declining mode at the moment will try to retune their fine form. Shocking defeat last week in Fuzhou will motivate strong favourite Lee YD/Yoo YS to reclaim their 2013 title. Top Chinese pair Fu HF/Zhang N still miss here after being absent last week due to Fu Haifeng father passed away, another title contender Boe/Mogensen also aim to add more title beside All England crown early this year. Several close matches may spring upsets in opening round of this discipline.

    R/32 highlights : Liu XL/Qiu ZH (CHN) v Gideon/Sukamuljo (INA), Chai B/Hong W (CHN) v Conrad/Kolding (DEN), Pratama/Suwardi (INA) v Kamura/Sonoda (JPN), Ivanov/Sozonov (RUS) v Boe/Mogensen (DEN)

Newly-crowned China Premier winner Tang YT/Yu Y is promoted into main draw and they should clear first round against Chinese Taipei pair. The Olympic Champion Tian Q/Zhao YL have challenging draw, to face Pedersen/Juhl at quarters then either Jung KE/Shin SC or Japanese top-ranled Matsutomo/Takahashi at last four. At lower half draw, The Incheon Asian Games gold medalist Maheswari/Polii looks good to book semifinal spot and will up against either Korean hotshot Chang YN/Lee SH, Tang YT/Yu Y or second seed Luo twin sisters.
    R/32 highlights : Andini/Giovani (INA) v Kurihara/Shinoya (JPN), Go AR/Yoo HW (KOR) v Luo Ying/Luo Yu (CHN)

In the absence of Fischer/Pedersen and Ahmad/Natsir, all eyes will pay attention to the Chinese pairs and Korean number one Ko SH/Kim Ha Na for title race. Defending champion Zhang/Zhao should pass early rounds, Jordan/Susanto have prospect to set up a meeting with home favourite Reginald Lee CH/CHau HW at last sixteen. At bottom half of draw, five Koreans combination are grouped with Liu C/Bao YX and former winner Adcock/Adcock.
R/32 highlights : Lu K/Huang YQ (CHN) v Yoo YS/Chang YN (KOR), Choi SG/Eom HW (KOR) v Liu C/Bao YX (CHN)

Sigh, WSX's name taken out, replaced by Aya Ohori.

My heartfelt wishes for WSX's speedy recovery.

As i expected, saina's injury seems aggravated. She withdrawn from HongKong open . Hope she recovers soon. She can't afford to withdraw from tournaments in this crucial time.

I have not thought She will reach finals of china open 2015 when she was in such a condition. But she proved me wrong. She defeated many good players to enter finals but could not deliver to her full potential in the finals. Hope she recovers well soon .

Actually WSX can't afford to withdraw from here, her ticket to Rio is still an open question. Wonder if she'll be at Dubai, I really hope so.

The problem I believe is that the event is hold, like all badminton tournaments, in one hall. It could be spread on two venues, for at least the qualification and first round. Better efforts would have to be made for selling tickets, but considering almost nothing is made in Hong Kong in that regard, I think it could be possible.

The local organizer should arrange XD matches to be played at first day of tournament after qualification round. I notice some Superseries tournaments with 4 courts apply this arrangement to avoid late-night matches.

This is a good idea but unfair for the qualifiers who might have to play many matches on one day. Especially those who play qualifiers in men's/women's doubles and mixed doubles. I guess the way to avoid that is the qualifiers still play their first round on Wednesday whereas all the other first round mixed matches can be on Tuesday.

Usually, four XD matches which involving the qualifiers are scheduled to play on Wednesday but yeah, there's pro and contra about this.

Tago is not the player he was, definitely not without Park Joo Bong's coaching... he's also grown into quite a potato... so while the basic skills are there.... I don't see him in the top 10 anymore. Conclusion: He's toast at round 32 vs Son Wan Ho. If any Malaysian is to get past quarters, it's Lee Chong Wei. Wish him luck against the angry dragon, LOTS of it!

Ideally, I would love to see LCW topple both the dragon, and if possible LD in the semis. I really can't see Son Wan Ho defending his title here, nor seeing Srikanth getting into the semis like he did last year. I think it's probably end of the road for Srikanth facing Tian Houwei of China. I can imagine Srikanth falling out of the top 10 by the end of the year.

Kenichi Tago taking out Wang Tzu Wei by an identical score of 21-15 is a good showing. I think he'll give Son WH a run for his money.
