True, based on records, ZYL won more,a whole host of titles, specifically two WCs in XD and WD and many others.

Maybe BWF have other considerations, say, if given to ZYL , that would mean all CHN awardees, so spread the goodwill and encouragement around.

they must have a compelling reason to pick Carolina over Zhao Yunlei, so compelling that it must be obvious .... What have we been missing??

I can't think of any other than what I've already hinted. When LXR was more successful or dominating than CM a particular year, apart from missing the WC crown in the final, and being the first WS to hit the 100K ranking mark, she was bypassed the Female Player of The Year Award.

Instead of having a straight vote, let's have a March Madness kind of draw.

    The awards were ****.

There is no way Carolina Marin can win the award over Zhao Yunlei, other than BWF's pro-Europe, and anti-China bias.

Also, for me, neither Ratchanok Inthanon, nor Chou Tien Chen were the Best Dressed.

At least in males, I think, Jan O, was the best dressed.
For women, Carolina Marin, Zhao Yunlei, were dressed better than Rat.
(And I have not seen every player's photo)

CM got the prize because she did the unexpected and showed improvement. Winning more tournaments should not be the only criteria.
I think LCW could also have qualified because of his come-back, though he won less then CL.

IMO the criteria should only be 'achievement' when You are giving the Best Player of the Year award. Not 'improvement' or from which country you belong......ZYL should be clear winner.

one man's meat another man's poison. I think WSX is average at best. Gronya Somerville for me. Though I think Ashwini is quite attractive as well but not the best.

On court, CM "achieved" it all by herself. ZYL needed another player to "achieve" her wins. It's all a matter of perspective. You're obviously very biased towards ZYL, or against CM etc, if you truly believe ZYL should be the "clear winner". Again, Kohli should have won anyway. Fun times.

The Male Player of the Year award couldn't go to anyone else - Chen Long simply couldn't be overlooked after winning five Superseries titles and the World Championships.

The rest was largely a Yonex show.
Li Ning's Zhao Yunlei over Carolina Marin?
A Victor or Li Ning player over Chou Tien Chen and Ratchanok Intanon?

    Ahem!
    Ahem!
