Even more frustrating to watch Korean play if you are Korean fan

Their no 1 seed and WR1 MD out of medal.
Their no 2 seed and WR2 XD out of medal.
No medal for WS, MD, XD
Only chance is bronze for WD and a lone fighter for MS who might end up with no medal too

I think they got complacent after the big win in london 2012.
It's time for LYB to quit and bring in new blood to the coaching team. If one is in the helm for more than 20 years, there sure be nepotism, corruption and other negative aspects in the organisation.

What's all this talk trying to deflect the criticism on Chinese badminton with meaningless asides about the marvel and beauty that is Chinese Table Tennis?

Wanna know why there is no "Olympic selection controversies" in Chinese Table Tennis? Because they hold OPEN selection matches/competition! WR No,1 Liu Shiwen lost, so there is NO controversies (just a lot of "pity") about why she failed to get "selected" for 2 Olympics, unlike Wang Shixian.

Wanna know why people love watching Chinese Table Tennis? Because EACH of their top 5 male and female athletes have a completely DIFFERENT playing style and personality, so it is always a joy just to watch ALL Chinese Finals.

Wanna know why Chinese Table Tennis has continually dominated the world arena? Because they have an open, healthy and competitive SYSTEM, instead of some kind of hero/despot-centered "(mis-)management"-- local players rise through their "ranks" through actual COMPETITION, and they are happy invite foreign athletes to trained with them (and are happy to export talents who are unhappy/stifled in China).

Wanna know why people are okay with ethnic Chinese players playing for European national teams? Because they are actual immigrants who earn their keep and raise the overall level of their national teams, and not some "refugee/welfare-parasites".

China doesn't so much "dominate", but actually LEADS the world in Table Tennis development and sports science.

That is both right and wrong. There is still some strange choice in table tennis. Everyone following table tennis just cannot understand why they sent Jike instead of Xu Xin.

i don't think there is anything wrong with the chinese team. mgmt is fine & players are fine. this is sports. you cannot win all the time. it can be said china is a victim of their own success.

coaches: while it may seem like other athletes should have been selected, a case can be made for the players they did select. it's a balance between 'olympic experience' vs. 'up and coming youth' vs. 'who plays better at the big tournaments.' which would you choose? remember, you're china and winning is expected... the pressure is on.

players: again, the pressure is on. winning is expected. can you afford to relax and play like you have nothing to lose? i don't think that attitude exists on their olympic squad. you have everything to lose, and it kind of shows in their faces.

from my point of view the rest of the world is catching up while china is transitioning.

how long have china's top players been around? this is sports. you cannot win forever.

It is not about winning or losing. And some fans have been annoyed by LYB's style of management loooooonnnnng before Rio. It is about the ethos inside CHN team, where we can see so many interesting personalities, but they cannot express themselves. Everyone now talk the same and play the same style.
While this type of leadership is indeed something frequent in Chinese society, it is not the only one. One cannot deny the success of LYB over 20 years, but there should be a better balance between team cohesion and personal space to develop, or more natural attachment between players and team.

Yes they can-- Xu Xin just lost his single's match in the Men's Team gold medal match.... while Zhang Jike beat everyone except the new and improved Ma Long.

What I cannot understand is why you use the word "right/wrong"-- this is sports, you win or you lose... it's not a morality judgement.

Ma Long also didn't get "selected" for the last Olympic-- and there was no loss to China, just personal grievance for fans of Ma Long...and look what Ma Long did to up his game in the last 4 years!

Closed-mindedness is actually a sign of weakness-- that you are a special snowflake that cannot exist outside your "safe space".

It is a legitimate concern when protecting young children or grooming young talent... but I guess it just shows that Chinese badminton (society?) hasn't really grown up (needs to be protected to "guarantee" their gold medal haul); while Chinese Table Tennis is one of the few real ADULTS in the Chinese sports scene-- with truly cruel (as in COMPETITIVE, not whimsical) internal selection/competition.

W/e, in the end, Xu Xin never had a shot at the olympics and it is beyond retarded.

Wrong-- the trouble is Chinese badminton is NOT transitioning... I wasn't the one who started comparing Chinese badminton to Chinese Table Tennis-- but I am going to run with it...

When you simply avoid/deflect any criticism/analysis with "this is sports", do you realize that you are putting down other Chinese Sports Association like Table Tennis as well as the Badminton Associations of other countries?

Care to explain why the Japanese, Malaysians, Danes and Brits didn't choke? If you can apply your critical mind to the problems/successes of these other teams, then you should also allow yourself to stop white-knighting and think about the specific issues faced by Chinese badminton.

Eg. Tan Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem were playing quite comfortably with other MDs, but after they played as a scratch-pair in Thomas Cup 2014, BAM start grooming them for the Olympics qualification-- considering that they only found their stride in late 2015 (KKK & TBH even came back because BAM had no reliable MDs), is this tikam-tikam or strategic committment/planning?

Cf. The ironic article on aiyuke.com entitled "Lack of talent in WD" which listed how China mixed and matched the wealth of talent they had in the last few years:-

2014 winners of 3 SS, 1 GPG, WR No 1: Tang Jinhua/Bao Yixin (broken up because of 2014 Uber Cup loss)

2015 All-England & Swiss Open winners: Tang Yuanting/Bao Yixin (broken up to pair Tang Yuanting with Ma Jin)

2015 Indian Open winners: Tian Qing/ Tang Jinhua (broken up to re-pair Tian Qing with Zhao Yunlei)

I mean, it's one thing if they failed to qualify like Shin Baek Cheol/Ko Sung Hyun (2014 WC winners), but this shuffling reeks of olden-time (South-East Asian?) practices when they didn't really see badminton doubles as something to be strategically developed....

Aww, don't be so harsh on yourself-- you're not retarded, just upset that Xu Xin didn't consistently beat everyone else in the last 2 years like Ma Long....

I think the Chinese table tennis system works so well, less nepotism, and better manage. They should hire someone from table tennis to take over from LYB.
