    *Men's Singles Semifinals
    - Lee Chong Wei (MAS) v Lin Dan (CHN)
    H-2-H stats : 11-25 / WR : 1 v 3
The blockbuster showdown is underway, 37th meeting and Olympic Games encounter part 3 after Beijing 2008 & London 2012 Gold Medal match. This tie certainly will draw all badminton enthusistas to follow the battle of two biggest badminton stars of contemporary era. It's now or never for world number one Lee Chong Wei to snatch first ever major title as he had slipped numerous times in badminton big tournaments, World Championships (2011, 2013, 2014, 2015), Asian Games (2010, 2014) and Olympic Summer Games (2008, 2012). The Malaysian hero overcame Chinese living-legend in their last two meetings, China Premier (November 2015) and Asian Badminton Championships (April 2016). Lee shows excellent performance en route to last four while Lin was struggling and experienced thrilling moment against Indian youngster Srikanth Kidambi. The full-confidenced Lee will face the enigmatic Lin, a must-watched duel!

    - Viktor Axelsen (DEN) v Chen Long (CHN)
    H-2-H : 1-7 / WR : 4 v 2
The rising Danish star Axelsen willl be another stumbling block for two-time World Champion Chen Long to prove his status as China number one player. The lanky Chen negative trend and slump performance in last 10 months, his credibility is questionable, it will be challenging task for him to dump the hungry Axelsen to be next Denmark men's singles player to enter Olympic final after current BWF President Poul Erik Hoyer did it in Atlanta 1996. Both players passed preliminary rounds convincingly except Son Wan Ho who forced Chen Long played extra games at quarterfinal. Axelsen bagged the last encounter victory in Dubai Superseries Final last December.

    Women's Singles Bronze Medal match
    - Li Xuerui (CHN) v Nozomi Okuhara (JPN)
Nozomi Okuhara will bag bronze medal as Li Xuerui pulled out : http://olympics.bwfbadminton.com/20...-history-womens-singles-semi-finals-rio-2016/

    Women's Singles Gold Medal match
    - Carolina Marin (ESP) v Pusarla Venkatta Sindhu (IND)
    H-2-H stats : 4-2 / WR : 1 v 10
China domination in this category has been toppled as her last hopeful standing, defending champion Li Xuerui suffered knee injury at 18-16 position of second set. The new Carolina Marin is reborn after she didn'n produce excellent performance, started from early this year. Marin dictated the pace and controlled the match against Li yesterday, she's fast, full energy and high confidence to apply her attacking style. P.V. Sindhu also creates history for India badminton, her achievement has passed Saina Nehwal four years ago, at least silver medal is secured for young Indian. She trounced high-calibre players like Tai Tzu Ying, Wang Yihan and current All England winner, Nozomi Okuhara, what a fantastic journey in Rio, we'll see whether she will produce another brilliant feat to present gold today.

    Men's Doubles Gold Medal match
    - Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong (MAS) v Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan (CHN)
    H-2-H stats : 2-1 / WR : 12-4
Huge pressure for the Chinese combination to deliver first badminton gold in Rio, a setback for China badminton after London 2012 clean-sweep and reversal of fortune here. Fu/Zhang lost to the Malaysian darkhorse in group stage and they need to work extra hard to stop the on-fire Goh/Tan this time, a self belief of this Malaysian unseeded pair after dumped strong favourite Korean hotshots Lee/Yoo will boost their motivation to win dream title, the Olympic Champion.

A catastrophe for China badminton happened in Riocentro yesterday, started from women's doubles losing, continued to unfortunate event that Li Xuerui injured and unexpected defeat by Chai/Hong. The shaky Chinese squad now is relying on Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan and their two men's singles aces Lin Dan, Chen Long to claim glory in Rio.

Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan pocketed bronze medal in lop-sided match against the dispirited Tang/Yu. As expected Matsutomo/Takahashi clinched the gold after took momentum in third game after trailed behind 16-19, the Danish veterans Pedersen/Juhl blew their golden opportunity to top podium. Credit to both pairs who presented intriguing final clash. Great Britain Ellis/Langridge created big upset to knock-out Chai/Hong in rubber-games, third badminton medal for GBR in Olympic Games after Archer/Goode bagged bronze at Sydney 2000 and Robertson/Emms grabbed silver in Athens 2004.

    Thanks CLELY.

Pressure on Fu/Zhang is lighten if both CL and LD wins their matches but greater if both loses.

It is interesting to see the hierarchy between disciplines as shown by the calendar (the later the gold medal match the more important the discipline). The hierarchy is :
    1)MS
    2)WS and MD
    3)WD
    4)XD

If LCW wins, the probability for Mas's MD to get gold is higher. But if LCW lost, the MD will feel the pressure and the nerves may affect their games. On the other hand, if Lin Dan lost, it will affect his teammates as well. So this 1st match between LCW vs Lin Dan will be the crucial as it may be a factor that will affect their teammates performance and perhaps a source of moral booster for them.

So, I think the 1st Match of the day will be the determining factors for the rest of the matches especially those that involves both Malaysian and China.

This is the final stages for the Malaysian team who at worst may need to settle with bronze and silver as the Olympics Games are coming to the end. Will LCW keeps the Malaysian team alive for another shot of gold medal or will he be settled with bronze for his final Olympics.
Lets see who will handle the nerves and pressure better in the semi-final. Will China receive the same fate as Korean? OR will Mas who end up with just silver and bronze.

For me, its good that the MS is the first match to be played. If the MD final is played earlier, than LCW may feel tense up if the MD lose their match.

If Lin Dan win and Chen Long win both semi-final, China MD will have lot of less pressure, if Lin Dan lose then Malaysia MD will have a better chance. Zhang Nan will have a better form after the rest from Mixed double, 66.67% chance China will win the MD.

I don't know why, but the XD final was played before the WD final. Please read my post entirely

it is better and more motivating for LD because his match against LCW is first and he won't know whether CL goes through.

if CL has won first then LD might not feel the need to win.

I don't think LD cares much about CL's wins or loss. He even would like better CL lose, because for him VA is easier.
LD is in a search to establish his name for eternity as the best.

    CL is LD's countryman.
LCW is LD's best friend (as claimed by someone).
CL is younger and has many more years of badminton.
LCW is playing in his last Olympic games.
LD is a magnanimous man. He will fulfill LCW's dream.:)

very hard to tell what goes through this guy's head. does he care? does he not care? he has been playing badminton like he doesn't care. and sometime he cares but loses, sometimes he doesn't care and wins. he plays around, and when he wants to inject some pace.

what he is thinking, no one knows.

against Lee Chong Wei, will he play slow rallies? or will we see him play full gas? we are pretty sure LCW will be playing 100% no question about it. the only question is what will Lin Dan do?

this guy is truly an enigma.

Better rest, yes. Better form, I don't know. Zhang Nan is not himself in this tournament - luckily his partner Fu Haifeng is in top form.

Prediction? this is gonna be a tough one.

Lee Chong Wei vs. Lin Dan - touted at the very last match between these two rival. let's hope it will end up as epic as it hyped up to be. I think Lin Dan will rise up to the occasion and take it in another close one.

Okuhara vs. Li Xuerui - well, Li withdraw. so Okuhara will get the bronze.

Chen Long vs. Viktor Axelsen - I am keeping with the h2h and give it to CL. Viktor has improved a lot but still not experienced enough to break the older generated top of the top players. If he wants to win, he will have to dig into some unfound power within him and really rise up to the occasion.

Carolina Marin vs. Pusarla Venkatta Sindhu - PVS will win. but she will have to play like she did against Okuhara. no pressure and I have alot of earplug ready

Goh V Shem / Tan Wee Kiong vs. Fu Haifeng / Zhang Nan - i am pick the Malaysians to take it and bring him their first gold medal. From their performance, Fu/Zhang isn't creative enough to defend the young and powerful duo from Malaysian. It will require Goh/Tan to be fired up mentally and not crumble like many of their compatriots do.

No doubt today will be the best day ever for RIO Olympics badminton. What a treat

The first match of the day is almost like the first MS for the Thomas/Sudirman matches with Lin Dan as No 1 for the team. After he took the first point, as he always does, the pressure is off and the team carry on the winning momentum.

Only a few more hours to wait

the olympics is about your country's pride. LD will want to make sure a Gold is ensured for his country. IF it is a Chen Long vs Lin Dan final .. then he might become mr magnanimous man, other than that. .nope.

I think Lin Dan will win it because he has big tournament mentality. Always delivers when it matters.

For GVS/TWK, they need to shake off all nerves or else they end up like the MAS XD, CPS was so nervous that he was practically feeding shuttles to TA to smash down while GLY was powerless when her partner was struggling.

The key is GVS/TWK is to be positive, play soft shots, positional smash and not too lose focus.

PV Sindhu Scripts an Indian Fairytale!

Carolina Marin is hungry for gold. She comes in as World No.1, consistent and also confident. She has many weapons, experience and deception. On paper, she should win but Sindhu doesn't care about ranking or head to head.

PV Sindhu is very hungry for gold and is going to go all out. She had the toughest road to the final and has defied the odds by seizing the initiative. Gopichand used different strategies for every player. They have a plan for Marin but have not revealed it. Her strength in this tournament has been her ability to adapt to different styles of play, a solid attack and improved defence. In the past, she used to be a defensive rally player. For those of you who watched the Indian Badminton League you would have seen her transformation earlier this year.

Her biggest weakness is her inconsistency which has cost her many matches in the past. She comes into this final unseeded but in scorching form, supreme confidence and great fighting spirit. I believe she will win gold but it requires a Herculean effort! :)

When it comes to big occasions, Lin Dan is always hungry for more so I doubt he will go easy on Lee Chong Wei. LCW may be fitter but LD is smarter and and much stronger mentally. He is gonna win in a very close encounter.

His opponent in the final will not stand a chance. He will go all out to show everyone that he's the best ever.
