To me it looked like he was trying to cruise through it easily (conserving energy) without spending much which is expected I guess. Still we are seeing some nice points in between!

(Go to sleep it's 1am.)

I believe it's former Danish Team Coach Lars Uhre who is co-commentating alongside Gill Clarke. Would be very surprising for HKV to sit there as he has a match to prepare for tomorrow ;)
Edit: Oh I see someone already told you - sorry!

He was more like settling himself to the court conditions than "conserving" energy, it's only R1, even LD didn't want to do that.
But also, that's what SYQ has transformed into, we may see another gear on and off but that's pretty much it, trying to make his opp twist and turn hoping for an error more often than going on the attack.

Also we should give credit to the old guard, he's no pushover even today.

PS: I am habitual of sleeping late, also, keeping track huh? :D

He really isn't. I quite enjoyed some of his points and overall it turned out to be quite enjoyable to watch given it's just the start.

(I noticed since it's late for me too since we're just 1000 odd kilometres apart. Delhi to Gujarat)

    OK - here’s a bit more for those of you who aren’t here yet. This is in George Square, right in the centre of Glasgow;

    IMG_2382.JPG

and spotted on the banks of the River Clyde, the entire Japanese Badminton squad getting a pep talk from Head Coach PJB

    IMG_2380.JPG

The excellent venue is just outside the city centre, but you can get there easily by train from Glasgow Central. Get off here (journey takes 7 minutes)

    IMG_2386.JPG

and then an easy walk to the Emirates Stadium which is next door to the home of Glasgow Celtic Football Club where you can take a guided tour of the stadium if you so wish

    IMG_2389.JPG

    Back to the Emirates:

And now, here's the first competitive shot of the tournament delivered by Eva Lee (USA)

    IMG_2403.JPG

We watched an all N American WS match between Iris Wang (USA) and Rachel Honderich (CAN)

    IMG_2408.JPG

and the be-spectacled MS player from Egypt, Ahmed Salah

    IMG_2421.JPG

We also had the first injury of the tournament, but luckily it was only a kit-bag stand

    IMG_2428.JPG

    and the first challenge

    IMG_2432.JPG

meaning that Labar and Fontaine (FRA) won the point against Fadilah and Angrainni(INA) in what was a tight three-setter and probably the match of the day

    IMG_2434.JPG

    IMG_2435.JPG

The Day 1 prize for the smartest on-court attire went to Michelle Li

    IMG_2444.JPG

Michelle, who has a tendency to start slowly, started slowly, but found some rhythm to get past the redoubtable Linda Zetchiri in three

The player serving here is Ygor Coehlo (BRA). He has poise, balance and a cool head, and is a strong candidate to be added to the 'ones to watch' list

    IMG_2461.JPG

Match-up of the day was the MS encounter between Lin Dan and local favourite Kieran Merilees

    IMG_2470.JPG

Actually, Kieran played well, but Lin Dan was ready and focussed, and Scottish hopes were dashed 21-15, 21-10

    IMG_2472.JPG

At one end of the arena you can take a peak into the practice hall

    IMG_2426.JPG

Finally, a Day 1 billing which didn't live up to expectations was the MS between Anders Antonsen vs Fabian Roth

    IMG_2477.JPG

Anders was in great form and Fabian simply couldn't respond this time.

Agree, Kieran didn't play badly, it's just that Lin Dan wasn't in his usual casual, easy-going mood, worth watching again.

I suspect Shi Yuqi was nervous, not calm and steady , not that Scott is a mediocre player, on the contrary, I've seen the latter play some impressive badminton before. Anyway, not the kind of start I'd expect from SYQ, doesn't bode well for him, unlikely to pose a serious threat to Lin Dan should they meet in the QFs, I think.

She makes a post once a while though. Miss her summary. Fox did a good job though, a entertaining read from him.

If SBR/AP wants to win they need to cut down errors and if possible serve better.
Also, if the umpires have made mistakes should be corrected immediately that's why the referees are appointed, not afters few points, that'll not change the momentum nor drift away the concentration.
