It should be questioned several days ago, when @badmuse posted the training camp participant --->
    http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/index.php?threads/india-badminton.78823/page-104#post-2584325

I also wonder why the 17 y.o Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Siril Verma aren't a part of WJC team?

Too much single player in the team IMO. 5 boy's single players and some backups should be taken for doubles players, not singles. 3 single players is enough for men's.

    Singles:
    Lakshya Sen
    Kartikey Gulshan Kumar
    Rahul Bharadwaj B.M
    Arintap Das Gupta
    Aryamann Tandon

    Doubles:
    Krishna Prasad Garaga
    Dhruv Kapila
    Siddarth Elango
    Srikrishna Sai Kumar Podile
    Sanjai Srivatsa Dhanraj

It was too many singles players in the girls team and boys team while the anomaly in the girls team was corrected with extra doubles players following 2 withdrawals.
Satwik Rankireddy and Siril Verma are finished with junior events, they will only participate in senior events. When Satwik partnered with his former partner Krishna Prasad Garaga for last year's WJC, it didn't work as they had limited training time. Satwik trains with Chirag Shetty the whole year.

BAI introduces scholarships for 20 top junior players. Each selected player will receive from Rs.25000 to Rs.50000 per month. The number of junior players will be increased to 100 players as funds increase. BAI President clarifies Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy incident as misunderstanding, that the selection committee felt she was best for doubles. Also confirms Gayatri Gopichand was picked for singles.

The Karnataka Badminton Association in Bengaluru was buzzing as the junior badminton team gathered for the send-off ceremony prior to departing for the Asian Junior Championship and World Junior Championship.

The chief guest for the event was Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the President of the Badminton Association of India, who firstly congratulated the young shuttlers on being selected to represent the country and followed it up by laying out an in-depth analysis of how badminton as a sport is on a steady rise and attributed that to the undying efforts put in by the players and the management.

Since your tenure as BAI President started in April, what is the biggest thing that has changed in Indian badminton, in your opinion?

A: I have not done anything to change the outlook of Indian badminton, I am only trying to add to the existing methodologies. But yes, the streamlining of some rules is one massive change. Nowadays, the prize money which is promised to the players is given to them immediately once they win, unlike a year or two back when the bank would hold it back. Also, we have made it a compulsion for all senior players to play in national level competitions.

Similarly, we have made it mandatory for the junior level players to undergo training camps ahead of the international championships in order to fine-tune their skills. In addition to this, we have new models such as offering scholarships to junior players and have also laid out plans for coaching centres in five states in India.

BAI wise, it's been a massive year for us since we have finally shifted our main office in a short span of time to a workspace like atmosphere, shifting from the makeshift office we had in a rented house since the last few years. However, our main focus continues to lie in improving the badminton in our country.

    Q. There were some talks about badminton players getting central contracts from the BAI just like the way BCCI awards contracts to cricketers. Any progress made in this regard?

    A. We have slightly modified that idea which initially was discussed upon. Since our resources are very less, it makes it that much more difficult to give contracts to senior players. So instead of contracts, we have decided to give away scholarships to prodigious talents. This model means that we will be giving 20 players scholarships ranging from 25,000 to 50,000 rupees a month. In some time, we are also planning to increase the number of players from 20 to 100.

You see, at the national level, the players get some sort of endorsement since they are recognised. Whereas at the junior level, the full burden falls on the shoulders of the parents and owing to the economic pressure, we lose a lot of good talent.

This scheme seems to be a perfect way ahead and I am sure it will help many players in the near future. So for this year, the biggest innovation is the scholarships to young talent.

Your comments on the controversy regarding junior shuttler Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy's withdrawal from the World Junior Championships?

    A. On a personal note, I believe it was not a controversy. It was a mere misunderstanding that we only wanted to solve as soon as possible. Without a shadow of a doubt, she is a very talented player and we would have loved to have her on the team.

However, the selection panel unanimously decided that she was better in the doubles category. Gayatri has been performing phenomenally and hence was picked for the singles category. There was no favouritism involved and all the decisions were taken considering only good for the team. Unfortunately, she backed out and we could not persist any further.

Nothing personal. But i do hope Gayathri lose in the early rounds. I don't wanna see her in the later stages of the tournament.

Hard to believe that there's nothing personal in that comment lol. Whatever happened, she shouldn't be facing any consequences both physical or in this case "phsycical" :p for all we know, it's just a stupid mistake by the panel, and she's nothing to do with it.

It's clear enough that Satwik, Chirag and Siril will be concentrating solely on Senior circuit.
Why hasn't Vaishnavi registered? Or was it as well a team opinion?

I don't think it's a bad decision for bringing more singles, India unlike Korea and others don't shuffle the partners much, Dhruv and UK Mithula are more or less confirmed for XD, he (Dhruv) might as well do double duty in big matches.
As for the group ties are concerned yeah few experiments won't be such a bad idea

Players can't register for AJC, they have to be selected by selection panel. Vaishnavi was only selected for WJC doubles and she is now out.

Saina, Sindhu, Srikanth get direct entry into National Championship quarters
    PTI | Sep 30, 2017, 20:16 IST

BENGALURU: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has decided that all players ranked in top 50 in the BWF World Rankings will get direct entry into quarter-finals of the upcoming National Championship, which for the first time will be Rs 1 crore prize money event.

This will effectively mean that country's top shuttlers like World Championship silver medallist PV Sindhu (world No 2), bronze medallist Saina Nehwal (world No 12) will only be seen in action from the last eight stage.

Ditto for the likes of Kidambi Srikanth (No 8), HS Prannoy (no 15), B Sai Praneeth (No 17), Sameer Verma (No 19) and Ajay Jayaram (No 20) in the men's section.

BAI president Himanta Biswa Sarma said: "It will be mandatory for all the top ranked players to participate in the event. Those players who are in the world top-50, would get a direct entry into quarter-finals. However it will be limited to a maximum of eight slots out of a total of 16."

Sarma also announced scholarships for the upcoming players, who are facing financial constraints.

"Most of the times, good talented players drop out of the game due to financial constraints. Hence to support such players, we will be providing a scholarship of Rs 25,000- 50,000 per month for about 20 juniors to begin with, and take the number upto 100."

Sarma also said that BAI will be dealing with any kind of age-fraud in a tough manner.

"We want to erase this over-age issue by conducting the tests well before the season so that no one should undergo the mental trauma during a tournament or a camp. If a player is found overage, we will put him/her in the next category as we think the parents are the culprits rather than the players themselves," he concluded.

Yearly checks to curb age fraud

Corollary to the junior development program is the old issue of age fraud and the federation is looking to institutionalise yearly checks while letting off cheats easy.

Starting next year, BAI proposes to conduct annual age tests on suspect players instead of pre-tournament and pre-camp checks. If caught overage, players will just be shifted to the age group that they qualify to fall under instead of getting banned.

"Often it's the fault of parents so we don't want to punish children for that. Bans, we feel, won't be right," says Sarma. "Being caught ahead of tournaments can scar players and even sometimes push them to quit the sport so instead we have formulated an annual check to be conducted in a top New Delhi hospital which will be applicable for all tournaments through the rest of the year."

Age-group players who produce birth certificates issued more than 12 months after their date of birth would have to undergo these tests. The methodology of testing too has been an issue and just ahead of these twin international tournaments, AIIMS Delhi refused to conduct age-determination procedures since it would expose players to radiation. The federation is now in talks with a top private hospital in the capital for the yearly checks, with or without radiation.

Bone-age test is often conducted to estimate maturity of a person's skeletal system and a small amount of radiation needs to be used for X-ray of the left wrist, hand and fingers.

The absence of bans though begs the question of what would then work as a deterrent for players guilty of age fraud at a time when even stern measures have failed to stem the practice.

The CBI had in its recent confidential preliminary report named four junior badminton players who had manipulated their birth certificates. One of them, Akash Yadav, is part of the U-17 squad for the upcoming Asia Championship. The report wasn't placed before the selection committee ahead of the meeting, Sarma says, which led to the player being picked.

But once they learnt of it, BAI issued a directive for his release from the preparatory camp. In response, Akash approached the Delhi High Court which, two days ago, ordered a stay on the federation's ruling, clearing his path for participation. "Once he's back, we will have him undergo fresh checks," says Sarma.

Any news about her retired on second game at Czech IC qualification round? Is it because of injury?

As @badmuse pointed out that she has played 30 tournaments so far in this year, there is no wonder she retired in the middle of the match.

I saw that match. She could not even react to the shuttles. Her legs were very heavy. She kept on turning to her coach and was shaking her head as if she could not proceed further.

IT's time she need to take rest and come back stronger.

    I don't wanna see Gopichand's daughter and i won't follow her.

Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy picked up a thigh injury during her match. She is playing too many tournaments in a race to keep her ranking high and get match exposure. She needs guidance, someone to advice her on how many tournaments she can play in a year for her fitness and physical limits. How much time she should train and build endurance.
