Kenta Nishimoto admitted to visit illegal casinos

The Nippon Badminton Association on Tuesday named Kenta Nishimoto as its latest shuttler to have visited an illegal casino.

According to the association, Nishimoto, who plays for the Japan A team, said he went to a casino twice in February and March last year, but claims he did not bet.

The 21-year-old Chuo University student has been issued a warning and removed from the team, the association said.

World No. 2 Kento Momota was suspended indefinitely for frequenting casinos, ruling him out for this summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

    Another badminton player visited casinos

An additional Japan national team player has admitted to entering an illegal casino, the Nippon Badminton Association revealed Monday.

The association is investigating illegal gambling on the national team after world No. 2 Kento Momota was found to have frequented casinos, which are barred in Japan.

Momota has received an indefinite suspension, barring him from participating in this summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The additional player — whose name has been withheld — notified the association that he twice entered a casino last year in February and March, but said he did not wager.

The association investigated 106 players and staff with the national team since 2014 to ascertain whether they went to casinos.

“Considering his status as a national team member, the player cannot be exempt from some kind of discipline,” said Kinji Zeniya, the association’s chief executive.

The association intends to decide on the player’s punishment on Tuesday, while the board of directors will decide whether or not to make the player’s name public. Kenichi Tago, who invited Momota and others of his NTT East team to the illegal gambling establishments, also invited this player, who belongs to a different club.

The player said in a hearing that he attended twice but left after about 20 minutes, while asserting he did not gamble.

Tago, who lost huge sums of money at casinos also received an indefinite suspension from the association, his name was stricken from the association’s registry and he lost his job at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corp. Momota was suspended from work for 30 days. The other players received playing bans ranging from six months to a year.

Since all the badminton players have been interviewed more badminton players who have visited illegal casinos linked to gangsters, illegal triad and Yakuza for betting will be named within next month. By the month of May I guess we will get to see a detailed lists of Japanese badminton players who have visited illegal casinos for betting.

This is unfortunate on so many levels - the effect on the sport in general, on the sport in Japan and on the individual players and their promising careers.
Hopefully, this will not escalate into a career-damaging drama.

... Japan won't have any singles player to talk about in Thomas Cup and Olympics. Hard blow. Really hard blow. They built it so hard..

Wow removed from the team for visiting twice a casino without betting oO... Way too harsh in my opinion.

Japan really has no one anymore to send to Uber/ Thomas Cup! It's gonna be huge blow to the rest of the Japan team..

    @kurako

What did you think of Kenta's performance against Axelsen?

Didn't this match get your blood boiling waiting for the return of KM?

I have not been following Kenta but the 2 or 4 matches i've watched him, I don't recall being that impressed.

He had incredible net control against VA, maybe a lesson learnt after he played SK in the SS final last year.

Have you been following Kenta? Has he shown huge progress? I mean he only has to maintain that net control and increase his smash power and he'd be a boss!! Ofc, second to KM.

Anyway, that match gave me a good feeling :D

I think Kenta Nishimoto is giving a signal to Kento Momota.

He delivered an important message, "Look at me, I could do much better than I was before!".
"And If I could, so do you (Momota)."

You can do a flashback on last year event : Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2017 [SF Result - Final Result]

    Nishimoto sparks Japan’s comeback win

The world No. 60 pulled of a stunning win that sparked a great comeback as Japan upset China 3-1 in the semi-finals of the inaugural Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

In the absence of players like Kenichi Tago, Kento Momota, Sho Sasaki and Takuma Ueda, the 21-year-old Nishimoto stepped up to upstage world No. 12 Shi Yuqi 21-10, 19-21, 21-17 in 67 minutes.

His win saw Japan level the score with China at 1-1 after they had taken the first point through their formidable mixed doubles pair of Chen Qingchen-Zhang Nan

Even though he lost, Nishimoto looked like he could win. It's not an isolated result either, so ... I'm not getting my hopes up too much yet, but I've got an eye on him.

    @Quentin11

Nishimoto is tenacious, hard-working, a good receiver/retriever and seems to have momentum on his side. But, as far as I am concerned (and I am heavily biased, of course), I do not find his playing style particularly exciting; nor his form as aesthetically pleasing as Momota's. But then, there are very few players who can match Momota regarding poise and beauty of movement.

What irks me most about Nishimoto, and this is not his fault, is the fact that although he, too, confessed to entering an illegal casino (on two occasions, although apparently did not place any bets), he was subjected to nowhere near the same gravity of punishment or social censure that was afforded to Momota,.. and almost destroyed the latter's badminton career. Even now, Japanese newspapers, when mentioning Momota, invariably start with, "Momota Kento, whose suspension for illegal betting was lifted in May 2017...." As for Nishimoto, you would never even know that he was involved in the scandal. That absence of public/mass media scrutiny no doubt helps with regard to freedom of movement and confidence.

That aside, it is good to see that Japan has an MS player who has twice beaten LCW. It is something that Momota never managed. However, Momota, for his part, has never been defeated by Nishimoto, even after the suspension.

As far as general sentiment in Japan is concerned, Nishimoto plays a distant second fiddle. Needless to say, his achievement in the Malaysia Masters did not make national television here, nor was it picked up in any depth by the newspapers. It looks like, at least for the time being, the outside world may be more interested in Nishimoto's accomplishments than is Japan.

I do not know if Nishimoto has improved that dramatically. In the All Japan Championships of Nov/Dec 2017, he was defeated by Takeshita (as was Momota). And, although he had a good run at the French Open, he was defeated in R1 by Anders Antonsen in the China Open, and didn't even make it past the qualifier in the Hong Kong Open (both November 2017). He is hardly consistent.

Hmmm.... maybe with the demise of the LD and LCW, the world of badminton has weakened, and in this general vacuum players like Nishimoto can actually make it to (former) SS finals.

I presume you are referring to his match against VA recently…

Yes I was quite impressed with his performance against VA too, very patient, consistent and brilliant defence. He also played well against LCW, although I did feel that LCW got a bit complacent and took his foot off the gas once he had a decent lead in the second game – as he often does. But certainly a well-deserved win by KN.

He has a similar playing style to KM, which VA has often struggled against in the past but his performance in Malaysia convinced me that his defence could potentially be better than KM. I just hope it is not a "one off" performance.

But there is one thing that I feel both he and KM lacks that’s perhaps holding them back from becoming a great, it’s the ability to finish or create an opportunity effectively. They seem to lack a strong enough weapon that can dependably create opportunities from different situations. KM does have decent drops and deception which does work well for him but it isn’t quite enough to consistently beat the very best. Whereas KN seems to rely mainly on a more passive, patient, “just get everything back” style of play.

The other thing I noticed is that KN’s split step can sometimes be a little exaggerated so he may be using more energy than he needs. He makes up for it by being very hard working player on court but I feel it’s not something that is sustainable in the long run.

KM is much more efficient in this regard and although I feel KM’s defence is a little weaker, its certainly not poor and he more than makes up for it in other areas.

I think KM differs on the following:

    1. Like @kurako said, poise and beauty of movement (KM much better);
    2. Strategy and quick wit (KM much better - KN was basically giving free smashes to VA); and
    3. Smash power (KN is no where near KM on power).

That said, I think KN has the edge slightly on net and defence (if we take into consideration his performance in the match against VA).

Yes very true, I only learnt about KN's involvement in the said affair when posting on this thread.

I see, I have a better picture on KN now. Thank you.

I was happy with the match in the sense that seeing KN playing like is, for me, yet another confirmation that KM can play at that level.

Last week result will bring Kenta Nishimoto on top of other JPN players inside the BWF Ranking.

Kenta Nishimoto will reach his highest BWF rank ever, Rank 20th this week.

So, he will be first MS for Badminton Asia Team Championships next 2 weeks in Malaysia. Since the BWF World Ranking on Jan 25, 2018 will be used for the BATC Order of Play determination.

This could make for a couple of strange results. Lets hope BATC is as exciting as the Sudirman Cup was last year.

In the 2017 hong kong open tournament, kenta nishimoto has lost on the first day (qualifying round). That was a disappointed result.
But after one year, kenta was improved much, he can go though second round. I hope he can go to final in this tournament.
Look at kenta, I can see myself in the past ^-^
