I am suffering from top part of my knee due to patella weakening. Unable to play badminton due to knee pain. Any suggestion on whether this needs any surgery or can it done through physical training.

Have you already got it checked with a doctor?
If not then don't wait and get it checked.

"patellar instability" is caused by an imbalance of the muscles of the thigh.
It is usually curable through directed exercises to strengthen and/or stretch the involved muscles.

But complications can exist. For example, if the bone has become arthritic and rough. Or if there is a pre-existing problem with the hip, knee or feet. Each case is individual.

If you can afford a good physiotherapist or sports medicine doc, then start with that. Good luck.:)

A brace specifically made for stabilizing the patella can be useful for someone who has pain with day-to-day activities. But if worn too much, it can actually lead to a weakening of the muscles that need strengthening.

So a brace can be a convenient temporary aid but the cure is the physical therapy. :)

Thank you Ashley. My physio is asking to keep a rolled towel under the knee and given some exercise to make the quadriceps strong. Not yet recommended IT Band.
Please update your progress. Are u able to play and using knee brace ?

It is amazing how quickly the leg muscles, and particularly the vastus medialis (teardrop shaped muscle on the inner thigh above the knee) can atrophy. I had the unfortunate experience of spending 2 weeks in hospital in January due to abdominal surgery. My legs all but wasted away and I have had to rebuild the muscles. Back playing and cycling, now though :)
