Yes, Sun Yu has just announced her retirement and left CBA. For the past few years, she's been plagued by injuries so much so her attempts at coming back have been problematic, finally forcing her to give up.
It's sad to see a promising talent not being able to realize her full potential. Wish Sun Yu all the best in post National Team days!
It sad to see promising talents like sun yu,wang lin, song xue give up their carriers due to injuries.it is too early for sun yu to take a decision like that because she is still 24 years old.
For now, it's not clear what her plan is other than no longer being part of the National Team. Sun Yu is still good enough for a top 20 spot in the world ranking. But the Chinese National Team would demand a player to have a realistic chance to be in the top 10. So at this point, Sun Yu is not likely to get any playing opportunity from the National Team. She may continue to play for the provincial team in the Chinese league. Provincial teams sometimes participate in lower rung international tournaments where the National Team does not take part. If Sun Yu can do well there, there may still be a chance of a comeback, a la Sayaka Takahashi. The key question remains whether Sun Yu can heal sufficiently.
I guess that's what the also 24-year-old ex-nationbal WS player,Hui Xirui, is trying to do, joined her former provincial team in international tournaments and, hopefully, do well enough to catch the attention of the national coaches and be invited back into CBA. I should think Sun Yu, whose world ranking once upon a time was 7, assuming she fully regains her fitness and has the will to persevere ,stands a better chance of succeeding than HXR.
One day after the big announcement, Sun Yu released a video on her microblog to thank all the people: https://www.weibo.com/tv/v/Gv4PACVUW?fid=1034:4274067335798835
Sun Yu at the 60th Anniversary of the GuangDong Provincial Badminton Team. Too bad that the group picture is resolution challenged, there are surely many familiar faces in it.
Sun Yu, the tallest WS player in Chinese team history is saying goodbye to badminton for good, six months after leaving the national team. What could have been if she stays healthy.
