One week short break from Europe tour, badminton top flight destination continued to Fuzhou. Previously known as China Masters since its initial edition back to 2005 then became one of Superseries level for 2007-2013 period and downgraded to Grand Prix Gold in next four years, 2014-2017. Starting from 2018, this event has been elevated and transforming to new label Fuzhou China Open, part of BWF World Tour Super 750 tournaments.

Kento Momota-Lin Dan showdown will highlight day one tournament amid a string of late withdrawals including Danish ace Viktor Axelsen. Japanese poster boy Momota who suffered Paris defeat to Chen Long has tough challenge against home superstar very early. The crowd favourite Lin who expressed still has desire to eye Tokyo 2020 dream is expected to show better feat this time as last meeting story saw Lin succumbed meekly to current World Champion in Tokyo. The reviving Chen Long will face tricky test, Thai young star Kantaphon Wangcharoen who often troubling established names lately. On bottom-half draw, Kidambi Srikanth versus Chou Tien Chen is possible quarters plot also Shi Yuqi versus China Open Super 1000 champion Anthony Ginting.

Already securing Guangzhou World Tour Final ticket mathematically, Tai Tzu Ying pulled out here and giving the unseededs of first quadrant a favourable draw. Barring any upsets, we should see Nozomi Okuhara, Pusarla Sindhu and He Bingjiao on last eight. Back to business from elbow injury, three-time World Champion Carolina Marin will start her campaign against local new prospect Cai Yanyan while second seed Akane Yamaguchi will be tested by Danish fast improved player Mia Blichfeldt.

A tricky path for world number one Gideon/Sukamuljo to march on semifinal, Lee JH/Lee Y are their first opponent, then most likely Danish veteran Boe/Mogensen then meet either Astrup/Rasmussen or Han CK/Zhou HD. Standing on second quadrant, Liu C/Zhang N and Alfian/Ardianto are projected to cross sword in last eight. A mild draw in lower-half that consists of world champion Li JH/Liu YC, Chen HL/Wang CL, Kamura/Sonoda and Conrad/Kolding to fill seeding position.

Top four seeds in women’s doubles department have first round bye. China best hopeful Chen QC/Jia YF who didn’t perform consistently post Asian Games victory have arduous journey to break final, barricaded by three Japanese pairs here, Tanaka/Yonemoto, Matsumoto/Nagahara and Fukushima/Hirota. The Olympic Champion Matsutomo/Takahashi and world number four Polii/Rahayu are the frontrunner from lower half draw.

China and Indonesia have big number in mixed doubles department including their experimenting pairs. Former All England Champion Debby Susanto will be paired up with reigning WJC Rinov Rivaldy. The flawless duo Zheng/Huang have no serious stumbling blocks en route into last four where they’re slated to meet the Olympic Champion Ahmad/Natsir. Second seed Wang YL/Huang DP who suffered back to back defeat last month to Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai need to bounce back and regain their confidence back, the possible opponents on their path are Chan/Goh, Tang CM/Tse YS and Watanabe/Higashino.

Finally a tournament which I can watch without having to stay up all night long :):)

Rare to have top half on the first day. I guess there won't be a live streaming for all 5 courts per usual?
Happy to see minions, Liu/Zhang and Lin Dan on court 2 and 1. At least I can watch them somewhere else.

    Lin Dan Jia you!

Does BWF ammend the rule on 'having 1 Open tournament per country'?
So this one is also called as China Open instead of China Masters?

bwf does not name the tournaments.
    1. bwf has a guideline as to the number of, and levels of, tournaments they allow (want) in a country. naturally they change it based on the amount of money a member association can raise to host tournaments.
    2. there are contracts between sponsors and member associations as to the use of the words in a tournament's title. so depending on the contract language it is possible to have a yonex open/victor open/li-ning open/whatever open in the same country. a member association can agree, or not, to give a sponsor the exclusive on any particular title wording.
in short: bwf guides the level (aka. ranking points). sponsors, along with associations, decide on the name(s).

I am not so sure. CM, AY, NO, RI, PVS are still around. I don't know if CM can back to her best or not given that she was injured last month.

Is it true? I read somewhere that INA Master Suoer 500, January 2019 will be their last tournament as a pair?!

Yeah, there is small possibility for INA Master but still it's not confirmed yet. Maybe we can say 99% Fuzhou China Open will be the last tournament for Liliyana Natsir.

I've just found a polling for that :D

Haha I was thinking that orange make it looked weird. But anything is better than bee jerseys.

The streaming is lagging, can't watch the match at all.
But from the look of it they are still struggling, apparently. Hopefully they make it to the next round.
