From the five categories, four are dominated by one player/pair each. KM, TTY, Minions, Zheng/Huang dominate the MS, WS, MD, XD category respectively. For WD, it's JPN WD as a whole that dominates the category. I will list the dominating players' win loss record along with the titles in 2018.

    MS - Kento Momota
    BWF World Tour only : 40-6 (86.96%)
    Overall tournaments : 70-7 (90.91%)
    Titles won : 6

    WS - Tai Tzu Ying
    BWF World Tour only : 42-5 (89.36%)
    Overall tournaments : 58-7 (89.23%)
    Titles won : 8

MD - Marcus Fernaldi Gideon / Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo
    BWF World Tour only : 49-3 (94.23%)
    Overall tournaments : 62-5 (92.54%)
    Titles won : 9

XD - Zheng Siwei / Huang Yaqiong
    BWF World Tour only : 46-4 (92%)
    Overall tournaments : 58-5 (92.06%)
    Titles won : 9

From the statistics, minions have the best win loss record. However, their win loss in overall tournaments are lower than their win loss in BWF World Tour only, suggesting that they don't achieve great results in major events.

But they are also in a very difficult and competitive sector. To me they are the most dominating MD history has ever seen also the best Pound for Pound MD pair. Momota didnt play in AE, so one can see that in positive or negative manner.

BWF will make the judgment. But its in China so who knows...

Still can't believe minions have only lost 5 times this year, especially knowing they've been off form for pretty long time after the all england.

Well, they can still win titles during their suck period. Minions are somewhat lucky during that period because most of MD pairs are not performing well even until now.

Zheng Siwei & Huang Yaqiong could have topped the minions as most dominant players this year (and ever?) if they didn't forfeit for injury @ Korean Open in R32. They could have been 51-3, 63-4 overall with 10 titles...!

Well, we will never know. Zheng/Huang has their own limit. If they feel they are not fit, they can forfeit. They withdrew from Hongkong Open because of it.

And not to forget their matches against their compatriots were not a few in most tournaments this year.

I think the most impressive of all is TTY for being so dominating among the WS which level has been pretty high throughout the year. She pretty much defeated almost all top players relatively easy when she was in form.

You mean ZSW as the male player of the year and HYQ as the female player of the year? I think ZSW/HYQ might get the most improved players 2018 instead

No way. Even before they are paired up, they are already high quality player. Most improved players award usually goes to the players who are from the darkhorse to major contender. In this case, MatsuNaga or Ginting can get that award.

That's the only award I could think of that ZSW/HYQ could get as a pair. I don't think individually they will win the player of the year. CQC won last year's female of the year for being no.1 in both WD and XD.

Then what is BWF for, if China calls the shots? China is only the organizer.

Hmm, you know, from the history, the player of the year awards are mostly gravitated to the single players. Double players are not usually win the awards. From what I see, the double players can win the award because either the players play double duties (XD and MD/WD) or the double players' achievements are way better than the best single players' achievements.

Exactly, no dominant figure in WD discipline as Japanese pairs win tournaments alternately. Both Tai Tzu Ying and Minions carve outstanding result in BWF World Tour but miss World Championships gold medal, interesting to wait whether the moment will come next year in Basel.

Yeah, hopefully they win WC next year. At least, they have one major title this year. They won AG gold medal. This should be a modal for them to compete at more major tournaments.

That is mostly the myth circulated around here. Others jumped

they were playing bad on every tournaments yet still won in the end. Either it's a myth or all other pairs are just straight trash. Who knows
