This evening I was there to watch a few matches and hope to see more new faces.

    LKY had it too easy:
    Men Singles
    Kean Yew Loh
    beat
    Indra Septian Wijaya
    21-6 21-6 0:19

    So too was YJM.
    Women Singles
    Jiamin Yeo
    beat
    Faith Goh
    21-5 21-4 0:18

Was surprised to see ex-foreign talent, CH, was still hard to beat:
    Chao Huang
    beat
    Joel Koh
    23-25 21-18 21-17 1:09

Perhaps the most competitive match was also the last to finish.
    Men Singles
    Ming Hong Lim
    beat
    Muhammad Elaf Wei Tan
    21-7 19-21 21-18 1:10

    Disappointments:
Too many walkovers, a total of 8, including the following:
    Women Singles
    Xi Qing Ong
    vs
    Xiaoyu Liang
    Walkover

    Notable absentees:

Ryan Ng (promising MS who entered but gave walkover, why? NS?)
Liang Xiaoyu (Our WS ex-No.1 also gave walkover. Why? Still injured?)
Terry Hee (used to be Danny Bawa's partner)
Yao Lei (too busy coaching? But her ex-partner Sari Shinta Mulia participated.)
    Jason Wong (NS?)
    Crystal Wong

    Anybody else???

    Anybody knows why?

    Was told the following:

Liang Xiaoyu quit playing and she returned home in China .
Terry Hee Yong Kai, originally born in Penang, Malaysia, just like Loh Kean Yew and his elder brother Loh Kean Hean, went back to Penang.
Crystal Wong Jia Ying is no longer in Singapore. She went overseas to further her studies.
Yao Lei is back in China and she is no longer in Singapore

    Yes another lady player:
It seems Ong Ren Ne went to Scotland to further her studies.
She forms a permanent XD partnership with Jack Macgregor from Scotland to play XD matches since 2018 till now

Some old but inspiring news on local-born Yeo Jia Min in 2017:

Badminton: Singapore's Yeo Jia Min tops world junior ranking

The 18-year-old dethroned Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei in the latest badminton rankings to be the new world junior number 1.

SINGAPORE: Local badminton sensation Yeo Jia Min has been named the new women's youth number one in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings that were released on Thursday (Jun 8).

The 18-year-old overtook Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei, making it the first time that a Singaporean badminton player - in either junior or senior categories - made it to the top of the BWF's ranking system.

The Under-19 player is currently ranked 62nd on the senior circuit.
    (Now ranked 41 Last updated : Tue, 22 Jan 2019, 12:00 am )

Yeo has been racking up impressive victories on the competitive circuit. Her professional title wins include last July's Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Grand Prix, as well as the Yonex Dutch Junior International crown in March this year.

She also won the Badminton Asia Under-17 Junior Championships title in 2015.

Yeo will next be in action for the senior Crown Group Australian Open later this month, as well as the Yonex Open Taiwan from June 27 to July 2.

Before heading for August's SEA Games in Malaysia, Yeo will also be playing in the Asia Junior Championships in late July.

The Singapore Sports School graduate said she was initially unaware of her latest accolade: "I didn’t know that I was actually the world junior number 1, as it was my parents who notified me."

"I feel thankful to see my progress from my training and competitions. So I think it’s encouraging to do what I’m doing to train hard and continue to strive to improve myself," said Yeo, who studies the playing style of world number 1 Tai Tzu Ying for inspiration.

Yeo's secret? Practice matches with male sparring partners at the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA), according to the junior top seed. "In terms of women’s singles, there aren't many for me to be exposed to in Singapore. Male players play slightly differently than the women’s singles players as they have the speed and power."

    SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS "COMMENDABLE": GRACE FU

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu said she was "very proud" of Yeo. "Her sporting achievements at this young age (are) commendable, through her hard work and a good support system," she said in a Facebook post on Friday.

She noted that the Singapore Sports School, Singapore Sports Institute and Singapore Badminton Association have been instrumental in her journey as a rising badminton star on the world stage.

"I hope more youth athletes will be inspired by Jia Min's achievements. We will continue to support our aspiring talents, and nurture the next generation of sporting champions for Singapore," Ms Fu said.

Take it more positively. They help raise our standards and keep Singapore's flag flying in the sporting world. Some remained behind, settled down and continued to coach and train our athletes.

Many of Singapore's pioneer leaders were not born here. Politicians like Toh Chin Chye, Goh Keng Swee, etc. They came mainly from then Malaya and as far as Sri Lanka. But they helped us to fight against great odds and contributed to what Singapore is today.

(Nice to see that TWH has teamed up with Danny in XD in this SNO)

I'm sure we should have quite a number who graduated recently who are participating in this year's special National Open tournament. This is good.

    2016 Year of Graduation
Aaron Yong Chuan Shen, Bernice Lim Zhi Rui, Darrion Michael Ng Weng Soong, Howin Wong Jia Hao, Ivan Go Wei Hon, Jason Teh Jia Heng, Lee Wei Hong, Nur Insyirah Khan Abdul Hamid Khan, Ting Hock Yu

Unfortunately there were no updated graduate lists for 2017 and 2018.

And where are the pioneer graduates now? Are they involved in coaching and sports administration or other non-related fields?

    2006 Year of Graduation
Chen Guorui, Eugene Sng Jing Feng, Zhou Linglin

Here's wishing Crystal and Ong Ren Ne all the best in their studies overseas as well as their badminton aspirations.

    Yes, and they ought to.

Again LKY and YJM had easy passages to the singles semis winning in straight games of under 10 points for both games.

I don't think they will be stopped tomorrow although one would expect a better fight from their opponents.

In particular, LKY will face Chao Huang who defeated Marcus Wijanu dwi Christanto 21-14, 21-19. CH had to toil hard for the second game and looked very tired at the end of it. Strong crowd vocal support helped the heavier CH to overcome his fatigue and he prevailed. Against LKY, CH will face more difficulties as the former is much faster and fresher.

In MD, Wesley Koh/Junsuke Kubo put up a spirited fight before going down to C. Danny Bawa/Loh Kean Hean 21-17, 21-14.

Another well-fought MD match was between Howin Wong/Aaron Yong against Bimo Adi Prakoso/Royston Loh which the former won in the decider, 21-16, 20-22, 21-9.

The only other rubber match was the XD between Rizky Hidayat Ismail/Shinta Mulia Sari and Andy Kwek/Citra Putri Sari Dewi which the former won 22-24, 21-15, 21-16.

Again, all national top players are in the tournament finals, this means 1 good thing and 1 bad thing:

The best players are getting more attention and are able to represent Singapore more.

But it also means that there isn't much hindde gems left. These players are our best shots already

    The champions and runners-up:

Match overview of Friday, February 1, 2019
    Time Draw Score Duration Court

    7:00 PM Mixed Doubles
    Danny Bawa Chrisnanta
    Wei Han Tan

    -
    Rizky Hidayat Ismail
    Shinta Mulia Sari
    21-19 21-10 0:31 Main Location - Court 1

    7:30 PM Women Singles
    Jiamin Yeo
    -
    Jaslyn Hooi
    21-17 21-12 0:31 Main Location - Court 1

    8:00 PM Women Doubles
    Ming Hui Lim
    Citra Putri Sari Dewi

    -
    Yu Jia Jin
    Yun Liang
    21-18 21-15 0:34 Main Location - Court 1

    8:30 PM Men Doubles
    Rizky Hidayat Ismail
    Albert Saputra

    -
    Danny Bawa Chrisnanta
    Kean Hean Loh
    11-21 21-9 21-15 0:43 Main Location - Court 1

    9:00 PM Men Singles
    Kean Yew Loh
    -
    Weihong Lee
    21-12 21-17 0:30 Main Location - Court 1

Of course I expected LKY and YJM to win although their respective opponents had managed to put up a better fight and secure more points. Credit goes to Jaslyn Hooi and Lee Weihong who each managed to win a total of the same number of 29 points.

I also expected Danny Bawa C and Tan Wei Han to win the XD although they are a relatively new partnership but they have lots of experience in this department. They did so in straight games giving away again a total of 29 points to Shinta and Rizky.

In MD, I thought Danny and Loh Kean Hean should win but their very determined Indonesian opponents came back from the first game down to take the remaining two games. LKH made too many unforced errors.

I was surprised that Lim Ming Hui and Citra Putri Sari Dewi won their WD title rather comfortably. They combined well and the more powerful Citra impressed with her smashes and cross-courts drives while the taller Lim made her presence felt at the back.
