What do you mean is it too early? Really, everyone should start physical training in their teens so they learn complete mobility and movement patterns. However, you do not have to lift heavy weights. If you are serious about badminton you should be working your core strength (front, back and sides), working your mobility in ankles, knees, hips and shoulders to avoid injuries, and developing explosive leg strength using jumps, skipping, running, rowing etc. You should be conditioning yourself using biking, running, skipping, swimming etc. There is lots you could do even if you don't lift heavy weights. I am not qualified to recommend weight training to children. What is the reason you want to start doing gym work? Are you only talking about lifting weights?
What i meant is not weight lifting until im 18 but you know all the other things in gym which will help my game in badminton Im 16 and wish to play for England at 21 years old - and am trying to improve my skills daily
Well you should definitely be doing lots of gym strength, conditioning, prehab and mobility exercises daily/weekly alongside your badminton specific training to increase your strength, speed, stamina, balance, coordination, improve joint mobility and flexibility. It is not too early at all, but start slow and build a strong foundation. If you wish to do this professionally, you will need the help of skilled trainers to help get you started and build routines for you. You can even start lifting weights, but not heavy weights. Form is crucial. Good luck
i will also do activities like swimming and cycling and also running as maybe this will additionally help and does badminton wall practice have lots of benefits?
I don't know what you mean by wall practice but I assume you mean hitting against a wall? Let's be clear, there are a few things you need to be successful: Strength & Power Training Stability training (core + other joint static strength) Conditioning (heart) training Prehab/mobility training Badminton specific footwork practice Badminton specific racket skill & technique practice If you are asking me about hitting against a wall, you probably don't have dedicated racket skill practice in place (otherwise you wouldn't ask) - the key to being a good badminton player is to spend HOURS every week practicing your racket skills on court hitting shuttles. You need to practice your footwork, at least some of which needs to be on court or on the same dimensions as a full court. Then there is all the extra stuff I talked about. Hitting against a wall basically doesn't do much in any of these areas, but its better than doing none of them. Swimming and cycling will be good for conditioning (maybe swimming is also good for some types of mobility training in the shoulders). Running can be good but don't do too much if you already spend time training on a badminton court, assuming you're already doing swimming etc for cardio. Good luck
I actually have played since i was 10 but joined a social badminton club rather than a serious one with a coach however 3 months ago i joined a proper club and i realise there is A BIG difference between two - do u think the social club my hinder my chances of being professional? Much appreciated for u guys responses on this chat especially Mseeley
Play in your county restricted tournament which is around September. Do well in that and you get a chance to go to county training and matches. Enter tournaments as specified on Badminton Association of England website. Do well in those and your county will notice you even more.
my coach said ill be ready to play for county in December so does this mean il have to wait until next yr Sept - ill be 17 by then -is the trials ONLY ONCE A YEAR??? im in middlesex county by the way
Middlesex restricted is only once a year. You can start preparing now by training more. You don't have to be county level to enter tournaments - use them as experience gaining and just have a go for it. Get some experience in local tournaments.
Yes will do - so currently im a club player and i plan to improve my skills for 6 more months then take part in LOTS of tournaments in badminton England website then in a yr and a half's time ill try out for county in middlesex when im 17 - then from there i will try to play national- will this be a good plan?
You should still try and enter the Middlesex county junior restricted this year. This will give you valuable experience in knowing the competition atmosphere and what to prepare for. See if you can find other local tournaments to enter. A quick google search on “badminton tournaments London “ gives you some options. Don’t be worried about playing amongst adults as at this stage, you want to get used to preparing for the tournaments that really do matter.
I don't think ill be ready by then as i haven't participated n many tournaments due to exams by next yr sept ,my game should be nearer my peak ability both mentally ad physically and between now and then ill continue playing at my club and also participate in tournaments
