Moving into initial time-slot April after shifted to June last year, MAS Open is sandwiched between IND and SGP Open Super 500. THE POSTPONED COMEBACK A huge disappointment for local badminton fans to witness the return of their hero Lee Chong Wei, the twelve-time winner delays his return to international scene until uncertain times. Last year beaten finalist Kento Momota is undoubtedly the strongest favourite to shoot third title in this year, scoring average result in January, the world number one regains his fine form to capture back to back title in Europe, GER Open and prestigious All England. Top-half draw looks heavy, containing prominent names like Momota, Viktor Axelsen, Chen Long and Kidambi Srikanth. Second seed Shi Yuqi has intricate plot to pass preliminary rounds, Sameer Verma and possibly Anders Antonsen in last sixteen. Anthony Ginting and Chou Tien Chen fill the remaining seeding position following Son Wan Ho pulled out due to ankle surgery. LOSING TOUCH? World number one Tai Tzu Ying indicates struggling start in 2019, quarterfinal finished at MAS Masters earlier this year then failed to defend her All England crown, lost to China rising star Chen Yufei in final. However the glimpse of her finest form had been displayed in Birmingham last month and probably she will regain the winning touch in Kuala Lumpur this week. Former champion Ratchanok Intanon would be the projected opponent in quarters followed by either recent All England Champion or Indian top-ranked Pusarla Sindhu. Two Japanese contenders Nozomi Okuahara and Akane Yamaguchi are drawn in bottom-half alongside with Saina Nehwal and 2018 runner-up He Bingjiao. MINIONS EARLY TEST The formidable duo made shocking exit in All England first round and Gideon/Sukamuljo also have tricky opening hurdle here, TPE lethal combination Lee Y/Wang CL who scoop three titles so far and runner-up once in their relatively new partnerships, started on February 2019. Waiting them in quarters possibly their compatriots Alfian/Ardianto. Stronger-than-expected, Japan did well in this category last edition where Kamura/Sonoda defeated Endo/Watanabe in finale. EUROPE BLUES Out of prediction, the Japanese women’s doubles legion didn’t shine in Europe tour, no one of them could top podium in Barcelona, Mulheim an der Ruhr, Birmingham and Basel as China and Korea renew their strength to shake Japan stranglehold in this discipline. But, the Japanese ladies did excellent job in South Asia region on January, won back to back MAS & INA Masters. Title holders Matsutomo/Takahashi together with Fukushima/Hirota and World Champion Matsumoto/Nagahara are the target to beat, the latter has possible scenario to face reigning All England champion Chen QC/Jia YF in quarterfinal, a mouth watering clash to wait. SIWEI HAT-TRICK Double specialist Zheng Siwei will seek third consecutive MAS Open after 2017 (paired up with Chen Qingchen) and last year (with Huang Yaqiong). Zheng/Huang will find complicated opening round rival, teammates He JT/Du Y and probably the comeback HKG lefthander duo Tang CM/Tse YS. Lower-half of draw presenting more appealing scenario, Wang YL/Huang DP will face a strings of formidable challengers to fulfill their seeding position, Jordan/Oktavianti, home favourites Chan PS/Goh LY and Watanabe/Higashino that might halt the Chinese number two. Tricky test for minions as they will face the on fire pair, Lee/Wang. Minions should have solid defence against them as the TPE's pair's smash is lethal. If minions can play their usual game, it should be no problem. Malaysia Open is the only tournament which the Big Three still reign, as indicated by the past MS winners in a few years. This year, I am sure that a new champion will be born among the youngsters. The Big Three era is practically over.
I have kinda a bad feeling about minions on the first round. Although, Fajri could beat them in Swiss Open, they are very dangerous even if Wang makes a lot of mistakes to do some hard shots. On different topic, hopefully we can see Momota vs SYQ in final.
Yep, their H2H is 1-1, and they haven't faced each other in over a year. It will be interesting to see who has made the most progress.
man what's with TCM partnering again with Tse... dumping cutie Ng for Tse for high tier tourney?... jeez that's just weird...
Don’t worry. LD will be playing against the local favorite on Thursday Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
