The renovated St.Jakobshalle in Basel will stage 25th BWF World Championships, a historical moment for badminton since the inaugural event, more than four decades ago in Malmo-Sweden 1977. Spanning forty two-year long journey, China dominates the championships to collect 65 titles since initial participation in 1983. MOMOTA 挑戦 ~ CHALLENGE Kento Momota is touted to prolong his world crown, in common phrase defending is more difficult process than winning a title. A mounting pressure for badminton poster boy as he becoming target man to beat by all opponents who had scrutinized and analyzed his style, strength, weakness, gameplan. Chou Tien Chen will standing as second favourite to create history in Basel, thanks to stellar exploit in Jakarta and Bangkok recently, the Taiwanese comes back with a bang to change his mindset and rectify uninspiring feat early this season. Both Indonesian protagonists Jonatan “Jojo” Christie and Anthony Ginting are drawn to facing off at quarterfinal, relevant prospect to capture a medal for Indonesia after 2014 Copenhagen meet. China men’s singles arrives to Switzerland with gloomy outlook, banking on past champions Chen Long-Lin Dan following Shi Yu Qi misfortune ankle injury that casting doubt whether China men’s singles could continue World Championships grand final since 2003 edition. Denmark also misses main pillar, Viktor Axelsen but blessing in disguise Anders Antonsen is showing encouraging development lately. Kidambi Srikanth will spearhead India squad for world championships medal quest. *Successful Players* Lin Dan (CHN) – 5x (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013) Chen Long (CHN) – 2x (2014, 2015) Yang Yang (CHN) – 2x (1987, 1989) THE MOST HOTLY CONTESTED The dethroned women’s singles queen Tai Tzu Ying never passed quarterfinal round in World Championships arena and will fully concentrate for this most wanted title beside Olympic Champion. She missed 2017 edition for homeground Universiade, last year Tai created shocking exit at last eight to He Bingjiao in Nanjing episode. She books modest outcome and little bit slowdown in 2019, failed to defend All England title in March, only snatched Super 750 MAS Open and Super 500 SGP Open. The new world number one Akane Yamaguchi scored excellent result prior to Basel, clinched back to back Super 1000 & Super 750, the Japanese starlet becomes top contender alongside with a string of high profile names, 2017 World Champion Nozomi Okuhara, reigning All England Champion Chen Yu Fei, 2013 World Champion Ratchanok Intanon, Rio OG silver medalist Pusarla Sindhu in the absence of three-time World Champion and title holder Carolina Marin. Chen carries important mission to end China title draught in women’s singles since Wang Yihan cried to celebrate her victory in London 2011. *Successful Players* Carolina Marin (ESP) – 3x (2014, 2015, 2018) Xie Xingfang (CHN) – 2x (2005, 2006) Ye Zhaoying (CHN) – 2x (1995, 1997) Li Lingwei (CHN) – 2x (1983, 1989) Han Aiping (CHN) – 2x (1985, 1987) ANOTHER STAKE FOR MINIONS Missing opportunity in Glasgow and Nanjing, the Minions will try to catch elusive World Championships gold medal. Dubbed as best men’s doubles pair at the moment, the Indonesian famous had picked success in almost every BWF top tier world tour but faltered shockingly at last two editions of world meet against the pair whom they beat frequently in regular circuit. Absolutely Gideon/Sukamuljo need world championships glory to cement their status and consolidate solid position towards ultimate goal, Tokyo 2020. It’s time for men’s doubles juggernaut Indonesia to reclaim gold in this category since topped podium in Jakarta 2015. Barring any massive upset, it’s Minions or Daddies who will claim grand finale ticket and likely one of Japan or China rival will be their last hurdle. Unfortunately Indian rising pairs Rankireddy/Shetty who won THA Open recently had withdrawn due to the former injury. *Successful Pairs* Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng (CHN) – 4x (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011) Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan (INA) – 2x (2013, 2015) Li Yongbo/Tian Bingyi (CHN) - 2x (1987, 1989) Park Joo Bong/Kim Moon Soo (KOR) – 2x (1985, 1991) RATTLING JAPAN SUPREMACY Starting 2019, Japan women’s doubles powerful squad had been shaken, Korea and China are back to the map, stole the limelight from the favourites in some BWF premier tournaments, the most significant is All England. Title holders Matsumoto/Nagahara with their prominent teammates Fukushima/Hirota and Matsutomo/Takahashi definitely will be the pairs to notice, carved Nanjing sensational triumphant to bag one set of medals. They will find Korean energized duo Kim SY/Kong HY and former World Champions Chen QC/Jia YF as arch-rivals who could spoil the party. *Successful Pairs* Gao Ling/Huang Sui (CHN) – 3x (2001, 2003, 2006) Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei (CHN) – 2x (2014, 2015) Wang Xiaoli/Yu Yang (CHN) – 2 x (2011, 2013) Ge Fei/Gu Jun (CHN) – 2x (1997, 1999) Guan Weizhen/Lin Ying (CHN) – 2x (1987, 1989) CHINA VERSUS CHINA? It becomes less competitive in mixed doubles category since current world’s top two rank Zheng/Huang and Wang/Huang raising their standard of play that hardly to be catched up by other challengers. Both pairs alternately fill winner’s list in 2019 BWF first grade tour, only slipped SGP Open Super 500 as the invincible duo Zheng/Huang lost to Thai duo in semifinal at that time. High possibility that these two pairs will replay last year showdown, defeating each other in Basel final duel. Some contestants that considered to deliver trouble for the Chinese, Wanatabe/Higashino, Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai, Indonesians Jordan/Oktavianti-Faizal/Widjaja. *Successful Pairs* Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei (CHN) – 3x (2011, 2014, 2015) Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir (INA) – 2x (2013, 2017) Nova Widianto/Liliyana Natsir (INA) – 2x (2005, 2007) Kim Dong Moon/Ra Kyung Min (KOR) – 2x (1999, 2003) Park Joo Bong/Chung Myung Hee (KOR) – 2x (1989, 1991) DAY-1 | ROUND OF 64 (09.00am) => https://www.tournamentsoftware.com/...F75B1C-E72D-4248-865F-8EC38C06F7CB&d=20190819 *MATCH HIGHLIGHTS - Lin Dan (CHN) v Nguyen Tien Minh (VIE) - Jonatan Christie (INA) v Rajiv Ouseph (ENG) - Vladimir Malkov (RUS) v Chen Long (CHN) - Mark Caljouw (NED) v Kantaphon Wangcharoen (THA) - Loh Kean Yew (SGP) v Sameer Verma (IND) - Hans Kristian Vittinghus (DEN) v Chou Tien Chen (TPE) - Lu CY/Yang PH (TPE) v Ellis/Langridge (ENG) LIVE TV COVERAGE
Excellent write-up @CLELY; far more comprehensive and readable than anything the BWF ever comes up with. Incidentally, this World Championship is Ouseph's swansong; he will be retiring from international competition after Basel.
Kevin Cordon has also withdrawn for some reason, so Antonsen also advances to R2 without breaking sweat.
http://www.flashscore.in/badminton/ The above mentioned website is good to get information about live matches, draws and etc.
No Shi Yuqi. No Viktor. And LCW just retired. This is a disappointing year for MS. With no Shi Yuqi and no LCW, Momota’s biggest threat are Christie and Ginting. Shi Yuqi and Viktor will be missed, Hope they are there for the Olympics next year.
Park Joo Bong, at yesterday's press conference, voiced concerns about Yamaguchi's condition. Apparently, she sustained a back injury last month at the Japan Open.
Thanks I'm still far from good, can't compare with BWF writer. Yup, a farewell tournament for Ouseph who will end his 14 years career. A hectic schedule causes player to suffer injury.
Antonsen is waiting the winner of Khosit v Liew Daren tie. Talking about Kevin Cordon, this Guatemalan player made major headline at London World Champs 2011, stunned Chen Long in preliminary round.
if my prediction is right, then, yes, I do have psychic ability. If LD loses today, it will be a huge news.
Today, Chen Long will play against Vladimir Malkov. The latter made a sensational performance in SC, beating Kenta and Kantaphon, the two players who are ranked way above Malkov. If CL is not careful, he may find himself with the same fate like his WC 2011 campaign.
For anyone in the USA there’s an official livestream of matches on https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/ however you will need a cable tv subscription to access live-streaming.
Since Momota won the Badminton Asia Championship last year, where he demonstrated he was the best in the world, CTC has never beat Momota again. CTC is not really a threat to Momota, Antonsen has to get to the finals before he plays Momota. The chance of Antonsen meeting Momota is slim.
