BWF News : https://bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.c...inese-team-to-participate-in-european-events/ Chinese Team to Participate in European Events Saturday, February 22, 2020 TEXT BY BWF STAFF he Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) can confirm the participation of Chinese players in upcoming HSBC BWF World Tour tournaments in Europe. In a statement released on Friday, CBA said that members of the team were healthy and not infected with Covid-19. It also confirmed that a number of players had been in the United Kingdom the past week training. =========================================================== “The majority of the team travelled to the UK for training [last week] and the rest remained in Beijing applying for a British visa. “The Chinese Badminton Team will continue to participate in tournaments including the YONEX German Open 2020, YONEX All England Open 2020 and YONEX Swiss Open 2020. “With the German Open about to begin, the team will leave the UK and travel to Germany. “The participation of players still in Beijing depends on the issuance of visas. CBA with the help of BWF and other parties are working to ensure their presence in these tournaments. “While the outbreak of Coronavirus has brought difficulties to the planning and management of Team China, we have received much help and support from all sides. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to this article https://sports.sina.com.cn/others/badmin/2020-03-02/doc-iimxxstf5811570.shtml dated 2nd Mar, 2020, based on information from the Chinese team now training in UK, Lin Dan and a few others who have yet to join the rest of the team are in Germany awaiting their visas to England. Additionally, the report says that CBA's plan for the entire Chinese contingent to do their training abroad will continue until the end of the Olympic qualifying period ( that is, they will effectively be traveling from one tournament to another without returning to China during this period). As we know, owing to visa issues, Lin Dan had been staying put in Beijing for closed-door training but his journey to Germany for the tournament there was without a hitch. Despite the German Open's announced cancellation, Lin Dan, He Bingjiao, Coach Chen Yu, and others have arrived in Germany last week and applied for the UK visas. As for when they can enter the UK in time for the All England is still unknown. Right now, most of the Chinese players are undergoing training at the Nottingham University's indoor gymnasium, nurturing their strength and biding their time for the All England Championships to begin. As some members of the coaching team have yet to arrive, both Zhang Jun and Xia Xuanze are helping out in the daily specific training sessions. The whole team is currently putting up at one of the Nottingham University's Halls of Residence, and to ensure their meals are taken care of, the team often engage the hostel's kitchen staff to prepare Chinese food, at first the UK side even hired a local cook. Zhang Jun divulged that CBA has made plans for the entire team to do their training abroad until the end of the Olympic qualifying period but subject to how the epidemic develops, the chief objective is to safeguard the health and safety of the players, to eliminate any disturbance and enable them to focus on preparing for the Olympics.
Hopefully they can also receive and spend time with their family one way or another, including the families being able to visit the players abroad. Could be mentally important for some athletes, especially the ones having kids.
It means CBA players & coaches will not back to Beijing until 26th April deadline to avoid travel curbs following COVID-19 outbreak is spreading very fast globally, last event BAC is rumored to take place in Philippines.
The problem is the players' family members are probably not or have not been self-quarantined as the case may be, unlike all the national athletes who are confined within the training center in Beijing without meeting any unrelated people (outsiders mostly, I suppose). So I guess it really depends on the countries they wish to visit to decide whether to admit them and under what conditions (eg, 14-day quarantine upon arrival at the airport at designated places). With such considerations to take into account, I hope the players and their families are not too affected by it, they have no choice but to take it in stride in view of the unusual and troublesome situation. Yes, that's the case as I've implied in brackets in the article I posted. If the BAC is relocated to Manila, Philippines, let's hope the Filipino government would allow entry for the Chinese and HKSAR players, perhaps with 14-day self-quarantine upon arrival prior to the start of the tournament or waiving that if the players concerned have already been quarantined elsewhere.
A blessing for China Wednesday, 01 Apr 2020 By TAN MING WAI https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/badminton/2020/04/01/a-blessing-for-china PETALING JAYA: The postponement of the Tokyo Olympics by a year is a welcome boost for badminton powerhouse China who have pinned their hopes on Chen Long and Shi Yuqi to keep the nation’s three-Games winning streak going in the men’s singles event. The men’s singles crown has yet to switch hands since Lin Dan defeated Lee Chong Wei in the Beijing 2008 final, reclaiming the gold won by Ji Xinpeng in Sydney 2000. Lin Dan managed to defend his title four years later in London, becoming the first player to do so in the men’s singles, before Chen Long made it third in a row for China in Rio 2016. Chong Wei was on the losing end on both occasions. China were only shut out of the final in Athens 2004, when Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat beat South Korea’s Shon Seung-mo for gold. For this Olympics, the Chinese title defence prospects look bleak following the emergence of Japan’s Kento Momota and Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen as top dogs and also the resurgence of Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, who won the All-England recently. There are also ambitious young stars who are just as capable of contending such as the Indonesian duo of Anthony Ginting and Jonatan Christie, Denmark’s Anders Antonsen and Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia. There’s certainly cause for concern for the Chinese side as the 31-year-old Chen Long’s form has taken a dip in the last two years while Yuqi, 24, is still trying to rediscover the form that crowned him the All-England and World Tour Finals champion in 2018 following a nasty ankle injury. Thankfully, the postponement of the Olympics to July 23-Aug 8 next year, has given them valuable time to re-establish themselves. Renowned Chinese media Sina Sports in a commentary said the one-year deferment has brought a much needed relief as it would now allow their men’s singles coach Li Mao to crack the whip and turn both Chen Long and Yuqi into gold medal contenders. “Now that the Olympics have been postponed, hopes are high that Yuqi will be able to return to the level before (his injury) come next year. “Had it not been the injury, Yuqi could have jostled for the world No. 1 spot with Momota. But Momota is also recovering from injury (due to a road accident in Kuala Lumpur). He has the opportunity to catch up with his powerful opponent.” ____________ *Will China MS player continue their winning streak in Olympic arena? Hard to tell and predict, their main threat will spread from Kento Momota, Viktor Axelsen, Anthony Ginting to Chou Tien Chen, Jonatan Christie, Anders Antonesen and the latest fast improved Lee Zii Jia.
An exhibition match (6th May 2020) between China national team against Sichuan team in Chengdu as CBA players are undergoing centralised training there. CBA v Sichuan, 3-2 XD, Zheng Siwei/Zhang Shuxian v Wang Yilu/Huang Yaqiong WS, Chen Yufei v Liu Zeqing (male) WD, Li Yinhui/Jia Yifan v Yuan Ao/Zhou Powei (male) MS, Shi Yuqi v Yu Chen MD, He Jiting/Liu Yuchen v Pei Tianyi/Gao Xiangcheng Match recording through weibo platform : http://live.weibo.com/show?id=1042152:3b8666ee7525b441acf1ece1bfd5194c
I just cared some women's matches: Li/Jia vs Zhou/Yuan: 19-21 17-21 CYF vs LZQ: 21-18 18-21 19-21 Afaik, Liu Zeqing was asked to play with similar patterns as TTY to train Yufei
XD, Zheng SW/Zhang SX v Wang YL/Huang YQ, 21-16 / 14-21 / 21-19 MS, Shi YQ v Yu C, 21-10 / 21-19 MD, He JT/Liu YC v Pei TY/Gao XC, 16-21 / 21-16 / 21-19. Sichuan team MD performance is beyond expectation, offers the most interesting tie of five matches. Shi YQ overall performance is much better (despite this isn't "real battle") than miserable feat in AE quarterfinal stage against Axelsen, his movement seems back to normal, unleashes effective lethal smashes, quite face-paced match in opening game then he lost concentration in mid of second game, 18-12 to 21-19.
We Well the women did seem to give a good fight. Glad to hear SYQ is playing better. Also, ZSW is king.
I watched the Chen Yufei vs Liu Zeqing match, it didn't appear to me that he played like TTY, not deceptive enough. In my opinion, he won narrowly in the decider , taking the final two points from 19-all, mainly owing to his male physical advantage, fitter, faster and stronger. Just found out that Liu Zeqing is only 19 years old and already Sichuan's MS1.
SYQ vs Yu Chen. Quite surprising that the spectators are chanting "Shi Yuqi Jia yo" instead of supporting the local player.
