Santoso famously coached 1998 Bangkok Asiad men's team gold medallist, 2000 Sydney Olympics silver medallist and 2001 Seville World champion in men's singles, Indonesian great Hendrawan. He also coached 2002 All England Open finalist Budi Santoso, and Jakarta Asiad bronze winner, Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Busanan has beaten Saina Nehwal in their three previous meetings. Santoso was South Korea's coach during the Rio Olympics and it was during his tenure that Son Wan-ho became World No.1 in men's singles in May 2017. Santoso was until recently serving the Thailand national team as a member of the coaching staff before applying for the India job. TOI has learnt that Santoso's name was cleared by Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials at the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme's meeting. His name was then forwarded to the sports ministry and it's been learnt from sources that the ministry has also given its stamp of approval this week. His appointment was done in consultation with Pullela Gopichand . It's been learnt that Santoso will be paid $8,000 per month and is expected to arrive in India in the first or second week of March. His contract will be up for assessment after the national team's showing at the Tokyo Games and if performances are found satisfactory, it will be extended up until the next Olympic cycle. At a time when Sindhu's indifferent form is a major concern for the country's sports administrators, and with Saina and Srikanth battling to qualify for the Olympics, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and SAI have zeroed in on Santoso as a specialist singles coach. The sports administrators were particularly worried after Sindhu's South Korean coach, Kim Ji Hyun, quit the national team set-up midway in September last on personal grounds. Hyun was instrumental in Sindhu winning her maiden World Championships gold in Basel. Her sudden departure led to a massive dip in Sindhu's performance, resulting in a string of first and second-round losses in international meets. At present, Park Tae Sung is the only singles' specialist coach at the Gopichand academy in Hyderabad and the Korean hasn't been able to push the envelope as far as recent performances of Indian singles shuttlers is concerned. BAI's secretary general, Ajay Kumar Singhania, confirmed the development to TOI and said Santoso's appointment has been cleared. "When we had advertised for the coaching position, his was the only application we received. We forwarded it to SAI. His application was considered and later approved by the coaches' committee. As and when we get the official ministry's clearance, SAI will offer him the contract and he should be with us by early March itself," Singhania said

It is a huge salary. I wonder what was his achievements . It seems like India is so desperate to fill up the positions with some foreign coaches in the stipulated time !. Anybody knew the basis of giving huge sums to this indonesian coach?

Then he helped Kantaphon win 2019 WC bronze" I think India desperately needs a top coach like him. But players themselves need to perform too. With a coach of Agus' credentials, I expect Indian players to perform better but if they want to reach the top , they themselves need to work hard.
Salaries are normally decided by the stature of the coach. India generally has a limit to how much they pay any coach. It needs approval from SAI and Sports ministry. 10 years ago this amount would have been rejected. Sindhu's WC Gold medal helped get the approval of SAI. The final clearance is awaited from the Sports ministry. Since they have announced it in the media, that appears to be a formality.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday asked the BAI to furnish some details about the Chinese players before it takes a call regarding their entry into the country for the Super 500 tournament, which is a crucial event for the Tokyo Olympics qualification. Some of the questions asked by the Ministry include: ‘Players/Officials are from which state of China?’, ‘How many players/officials have undergone for medical check-up and medical certificate has been issued’?, ‘How many players / Officials are coming from the other countries?’ “We have sent the questions received from the external affairs ministry to the Chinese Badminton Association. We are waiting for a response. Once they revert, we will send them to the Ministry to start the visa process,” BAI secretary Ajay Singhania told PTI. “The Chinese shuttlers have been in Europe for quite sometime now. They have been quarantined there and they have applied for visas at UK. Since the team hadn’t been to China since the outbreak, we are hopeful they will be granted visa,” Singhania said. Badminton’s world body on Friday said it has currently no plans to make any adjustments to the regulations related to the Tokyo Games qualification period. The world body said it is monitoring the situation and as of now other events will go as per schedule. “All other tournaments on the BWF calendar within the Olympic qualification period are scheduled to run,” it said.
Guys, I believe coach doesn't have any magic wand that he'll make players reach the top level or make them win everything. I think it's 70-30 partnership (player-coach) in making the player/pairs a top ranked material. Agus has been brought in the end of OGQ which will end after 1.5 months. So let's not expect miracles from him in such a short time. In the long run, good results might be seen but for that players need to work hard too. At the same time, questions need to be asked about coach Park. He has been there for many months but still no achievements or good results. Not blaming Park 100 percent, players are at majority of fault. But if things are not working out, better move Park to coach junior players or terminate his contract.
Very true, but sometimes coach can radically change the perspective of looking at things. When I was in 12th I know a guy who is very talented but lazy and wasted a lot of time watching movies and roaming. One day during math class that guy asked to his favourite math teacher "What is the benefit of going to a good collage? I know anyone can do well in life, but what is the use of working hard now?", then math teacher replied "The benefit of going to a good a collage is the quality of people you'll be around with and that will develop your character" those words hit him hard, he worked hard of 3months (only time left) and later joined a very fine collage. Similar perspective change is sometimes very important and only very good teachers/coaches can bring such changes. I think Indian MS need such a perspective change, so a coach from that view is binary(1/0 or 100/0).
Most benefited would be Japan, considering Momota's case. If it is postponed to November or December, definitely nobody will stop Momota from getting Gold .
If peak Momota contests for Olympics then whoever wins MS Gold will feel 100% satisfied with the achievement, they'll have to do that by defeating the best of the best opponents. Badminton fans will be 100% contented with a peak Momota participating in.
Current date itself gives you 5 months gap. So, if it is posponed to November, then the gap will increase 4 months more. So, definitely, everybody will have enough gap. And also, Momota has home ground advantage, he can play and have the feeling of it starting from now. How could he miss it?. India probably only have one person to qualify in MS. That too Sai Praneeth . You know , how it could be?.
I'll be most happy if BSP or ASG or anyone steals a medal in an Olympics where there is a presence of peak Momota, than otherwise.
