i agree with this point. i cancelled the bookings i made last july. even if the games happen i don't want to be in the crowds. 9\11 had the same effect on athens 2004. people were still afraid to fly 3 years later. int'l (non-european) attendance was low at all events. it felt like i had the badminton arena to myself during the first 2 rounds.
It's a bit long but bring some valuable information why is it a hard decision to postpone or cancel the Olympics for Japan and its economy (politically too), the Olympics itself and the different sponsors, media and TV channels. Nothing new but the article bring some numbers and different datas that help picture better the economic importance of canceling such an event for the host country. https://time.com/5786657/tokyo-olympics-coronavirus-asia-china/ EDIT: the article is a month-old and doesn't reflect the current situation regarding the evolution of the virus, only the datas regarding the cost of the Olympics and how a possible cancellation of the event from an economic and political point of view are valuable.
Tks for that article, but that was a month ago... a lot has happened since then. WHO has declared a pandemic. Total cases and deaths have gone up almost 3 times. And this is just the beginning of the exponential growth for many western countries... Economic sacrifices will be difficult but they will have to be made by all countries and corporations Sent from my SM-G988W using Tapatalk
It is too old regarding the evolution of Covid-19 I agree. By posting this article I was mainly focusing on the numbers from an economic point of view such as the cost of the Olympics, potential economic loss, tv rights numbers and the politics of Japan and the Olympics regarding a potential cancellation of the event. Those numbers or political decisions didn't really change since a month. I found other articles, more recent, but datas were the same regarding the economic cost/potential losses and I preferred to use a rather trusted paper, Time.
Kozo Tashima is also in the room with 60 others in high stakes meeting. At that time, he was undiagnosed. Thats basically all Olympic officials.
JOC board member says Olympics should be postponed: Nikkei Sports News March 19, 2020 / 7:55 PM / Updated 12 hours ago https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...pics-should-be-postponed-nikkei-idUSKBN21625O TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan Olympic Committee board member Kaori Yamaguchi has said the Tokyo Olympics should be postponed because athletes are unable to prepare adequately because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Friday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 organisers have repeatedly said that the Tokyo Games, due to start on July 24, will run as scheduled. However, the spread of the coronavirus and successive cancellations of sporting events and qualifiers has raised questions over the plans, including among athletes. Yamaguchi, who won a judo bronze medal at the Seoul Games in 1988, was quoted by the paper as saying that the IOC’s insistence on holding the Games as scheduled will put athletes at risk. She said that she plans to raise this at a JOC board meeting scheduled for March 27. “As far as I can see in news from the United States and Europe, athletes aren’t in a position where they can continue their training as usual,” she was quoted as saying. Officials at the JOC were not immediately available for comment. One IOC member has called the group “irresponsible” for insisting on holding the Games as scheduled, while several athletes have said the IOC decision puts athletes’ health at risk. No turning back, BWF not extending qualifying season Saturday, 21 Mar 2020 https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...ning-back-bwf-not-extending-qualifying-season PETALING JAYA: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) have remained firm in their decision to stick with the Olympic qualification period despite pleas by players to extend it. There have been calls for the world body to consider extending the one-year qualifying period after the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the BWF tournament schedule since last month, depriving shuttlers of opportunities to collect invaluable ranking points in the final stretch of the Race to Tokyo. The qualifying should end on April 30 but the notable World Tour events that have been cancelled or postponed include the German Open (March 3-8), Swiss Open (March 17-22), Indian Open (March 24-29), Malaysian Open (March 31-April 5), Singapore Open (April 7-12) and Asian Badminton Championships in Manila (April 21-26). ================================================= The world body could probably extend it until June and be accommodating as other sports leaders. The athletics and swimming, for instance, have their cut-off date set on June 29, while the qualifiers for golf will be chosen based on the June 22 world rankings. There’s no shortage of events should BWF change their mind. There are still four World Tour events lined up in June – Australian Open, Thailand Open, Indonesian Open and US Open. _________
with USA now seeing a rise in covid-19 infection, and several bodies making the same call, it will definitely add great pressure to IOC to postpone the Olympics. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/new...ield-calls-for-olympics-postponement-12564566
USA, China, Russia and Great Britain consistently rank in the top four for medals. A lot of pressure for delay.
